Does anyone know the name of this show? Someone suggested this is sourced from a Swiss tv show, 'Rendez vous a Zurich'. According to some others it's taken from a British tv show (see comments below).
This is the prettiest song I've ever heard Also, Helen Shapiro is gorgeous in this video. IMO, she should have dominated the American market if she had been managed properly.
Helen Shapiro was a phenomenon at he age of 16 and one of the greatest girls singers Britain has ever produced, if not the greatest. She had the misfortune to be blown away by the Beatles but her amazing voice has emphatically stood the test of time.
@@aladdinsane5448 I’d listen to Helen over any black singer from then and now for that matter.I find it insulting how people put black singers above white singers when is blatantly obvious they’re not better.
Not sure if anyone answered your question re: the name of the show, but I lived in Germany until 1967. I saw something like this (if not this very broadcast) on German TV about a year before we left, and being only 5 years old at the time I was blown away when my dad said she was only 14.... it triggered my lifelong passion for music.
back in the day there were many mid week 30 minute variety shows usually before 9pm and this could be footage from anyone of a number of shows of the time.
This is the perfect blend of voice, melody and orchestration. Helen Shapiro had enough emotion in her voice to touch your heart and in this obviously live performance she grabs you and won't let go. It's addictive and deservedly number one.
On this day in 1962 {Oct. 28th} Helen Shapiro performed "I Don't Care" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show' It did not make the charts in the USA; her only hit in America was "Walkin' Back To Happiness" in 1961, it stayed on the Top 100 for 1 week at position #100 In her native England she had 11 charted records between 1961 and 1967, with two reaching #1 {"You Don't Know" & "Walkin' Back To Happiness" in 1961} Ms. Shapiro celebrated her 67th birthday exactly one month ago on Sept. 28th
One word - perfection! This is even better than the recorded version. Slightly slower, more depth and feeling. But way too short - I have to play this at least twice!
WOW I am a Helen Shapiro fan and have never seen this LIVE recording before, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, her voice is amazing, better than the recording, if that's possible.
Terrific song sung by a young lady with an incredible voice - - depth, range, and feeling. First time I heard the song was just this week at the end of the episode of "Call the Midwife" as mentioned just recently aired in the US. Was so taken by the song I had to write down a few lines of lyrics and Google them to find out the name of the song and the singer. Glad I did. Like you, I thought I knew every top 40 release from the '50's and '60's but once again find a brilliant UK singer we in the US never really had the pleasure to hear.
I LOVE this song. It was featured at the end of "Call the Midwife" [a very good UK drama]. I know virtually, every top 40 [U.S.] song from the 50's & 60's and never heard this before and barely remember her. So I just googled her. "You Don't Know" was #1 in the UK and NEVER RELEASED HERE! [the U.S.]. Our HUGE loss. Maybe it was because, "Walkin' Back to Happiness", another #1 UK song released about the same, was released in the U.S. and only reached #100. Interestingly, as I remember Wayne Newton's voice from the 60's, whose career began about the same time as Helen's, Wayne's and Helen's voice are extremely close in range and pitch.
I believe that it was in the released in the U.S. On Capitol Records 45 catalog #4627 (purple label), Date: Sep 1961. Billboard September 11, 1961. I do remember hearing it played a few times on the little town radio station in Iowa that I was living in at time. But it never rally charted, that I know of, anyway.
@@ACowGirlFan Interesting. So it was officially released [for sale in the US], but it never sold enough to even get charted. Which means that certain DJs managed to get a copy to play over the radio.
I have never heard a negative word about Helen Shapiro from people who have met her- she has a reputation of a humble, normal, sweet lady. It is hard for me to imagine how someone so telented and that found success so young did not let it go her head but she apparently was able to do that.
Wow Wow Woo Oh Yeh Ye Yeh Ye Yeh Wow Wow Woo Oh Yeh Ye Yeh Ye Yeh Although I love you so Oh you don’t know you don’t know Just how I feel For my love I daren’t reveal I am so I’m so afraid You might not care Every-time you pass me by Oh you don’t know you don’t know What I go through Seeing someone else with you Oh I wish the one with you were me But you don’t know #repeat I would tell you if I believed That you might care someday But until then I never give this away So a secret it must stay And you don’t know you don’t know How hard to bear is this one way lover affair For it breaks my heart to be in love When you don't know
1961 RArE HELEn ShApirOs's PErfOrmAnCE. You Don't Know. Her 1St SuCCESs. iT topped the UK Singles Chart for 3 weeks. The single sold over 1.000.000 copies and earned ShApiro a GOLD disc tOO
She worked hard to get there, her records were turned down so often because of her deep voice & she was thought to be a guy.. At the time Lulu was popular , Mary Wells & Millie Small. ( UK)I followed Helen from her begining preferring her.
What a great great voice she had. SHame her career took a nose dive cos for me she had the best female voice of the 60's. I rated her better than Dusty. SHe had more body to her voice !
This arrangement and production does not show the magnificent voice that HS has. The brass backing is awful and presents the song as a slow "night club" sound which it is not. I saw her on stage at 15 years of age - she was fantastic!!!
I have always been a fan of Helen Shapiro and this was one of my favourite songs. A long time ago I once asked my father who grew up in the 60's....."How come Helen Shapiro wasn't a gigantic superstar with that voice?" He simply answered, "You have obviously never heard her live...." Now I finally see what he meant. I'm sorry people but this sounds really awful and I'm as sad as anybody that it does :-(
