Being of the Beatles/Led Zeplin generation, but having a broad range of music appreciation. I will say, in the realm of popular music, that was the best era. Music, clothes, manners. Classy, polished, confident, and optimistic. Big bands were the best.
What a classy lady singing during such wonderful & innocent times. If thos song were to come out today, the singer would be cross-dressing like a man (wearing pants instead of a dress or skirt), covered in tattoos like a total tr♤mp, swearing like a drunken sailor, and having no clue how to behave ladylike. Our only chance today at happiness is by immersing ourselves in old black & white films, pretending we're back living in a time when the world made sense.
The Pied Pipers did that famous version of the song back in 1945 and it's terrific, but this 1951 version is the best version of "Dream" ever! 💖💕💖💕💖 😊😊😊😊😊
Brazil really rocked the world musically during these years. I still listen to Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, too. They created an everlasting sound for the ages.
Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes Each one she passes goes - ah When she walks, she's like a samba That swings so cool and sways so gentle That when she passes Each one she passes goes - ooh (Ooh) But I watch her so sadly How can I tell her I love her Yes I would give my heart gladly But each day, when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at me Tall, (and) tan, (and) young, (and) lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes, I smile But she doesn't see (doesn't see) (She just doesn't see, she never sees me...)
Astrud was my neighbor when I lived in Manhattan. She was lovely and painfully shy all of the same time. My close friend was her biggest fan and worshipped her deeply. So I invited him to the building’s Christmas party where I was going to surprise him by introducing him to his idol. He didn’t show! So the next day I call and tell him what he missed. He was about to shoot himself. So I said no problem I’ll fix this. So I went downstairs to Astrud’s apartment knocked and told her that we wanted to take her to dinner. She was so sweet and said of course, but she’ll be touring in Europe for a month and she’ll call when she returns. A month passes and my phone rings and she says let’s go to dinner. So the next Saturday we took her to a small place in the East Village on a winter’s night and sat next to the fireplace and drank all night and sang songs, just the three of us. It was magical. Beforehand we met at her apartment for drinks. When we walked in, for Allan it was like walking into a shrine, in the hall of a goddess. I don’t think his feet touch the floor. He had a favorite album of hers. All I remember is that the cover art was a deep red. Allan walks in and sees the artwork on the wall and almost faints. A few weeks later we went to see her at a club called SOBs in lower Manhattan. Of course she ended the set with the Girl from Ipanema. I think the world stop spinning when she sang that song. A few days later, she said to me hey where were you that night and I said huh I was at a table right by the stage and she said oh I meant later afterwards backstage I said wait I was supposed to go backstage. She said yeah and hang with me and my friends . I just wasn’t cool enough to know. But the headline here is that she was a lovely lovely person and couldn’t have been kinder to a neighbor and a fan ❤
