Helicoils or thread inserts are very useful if a tapped hole has become stripped of it's threads. By using the thread repair kit it is possible to repair the stripped thread so that the hole can accept a threaded bolt again. Brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/

I used a helicoil repair on a stripped exhaust stud insert on my Harley Shovelhead. I used a drop of locktite on the coil. This was over 5yrs back,no problems. Love these kits.

On the fitting tool there is a ring which is held down by a small allen screw. You should move this down so you push on the back of the insert when fitting, otherwise if you push too hard the coils separate and this makes fitting much harder. But otherwise nice video

Nice work and video! If I may add something, it would be this: If the job allows it and you have access to a press drill, use it! If no press drill available take extra precautions to ensure that you drill AND tap your damaged hole straight!! Installing an Helicoil insert at an angle slightly off 90 degrees will sometimes prevent from fastening your parts back together. Especially when you have many holes that needs a proper alignment with each other. If you repair through threads, on a hole that must be sealed (thinking of exhaust manifold bolts here) it's good measure to use a thread sealant such as loctite 2620. On your helicoil before you insert into your freshly oversized and tapped hole. Do not learn it the hard way like I did.

@adam77480
@adam77480 4 года назад
I would think a thread lock would be an option but if that area is hot, you would need to use something temperature tolerant.
@martystevens3969
@martystevens3969 6 лет назад
When you need to drill, work your way up to the size needed as indicated on the kit. Drill straight. Use a thread pitch gauge if needed. Get a drill bit set. A Time Sert kit is better because it locks into the hole. Use Loctite High strength sealer. Use wheel bearing grease on the tap. Clean the tap often. On this insert kit pictured, set the depth to 1/2 turn below the surface using the set screw on the tool. Autozone has kits like this. Amazon has kits with about 6 kits in one case.

@ultimatehandyman The ones I used last were German and they came as a kit with some locktight type adhesive and they gave a max torque you could tighten them to. They were bloody expensive when you used a few sizes. What do these work out at these days?
@Mariusz760301
@Mariusz760301 11 лет назад
Yes. However, you must remember to use a very thick grease. Thick grease catch metal filings, which could get into the cylinder. The second important issue is the lenght of helikol. It can not be too long. At the end - watch out for the final breaking helikoli - not drop this part, into the cylinder. This method already repaired many threads without removing the engine head.
@migo33
@migo33 4 года назад
Great short no fuss video. So just to make sure, if I want to use a M8 bolt the kit's helicoil and drill will be slightly larger than M8? Just don't understand the concept of a helicoil if you already using a tap. Thnaks.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 4 года назад
Yes, the drill bit in the kit is larger than 8mm, so that it can accommodate the heli-coil. I have made a more recent video here- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-agvDFcWak7I.html&t Thanks for the comment 👍

@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 4 года назад
You can drill the hole out to the next size up, but that is often not possible due to the amount of material left in the component that you are fixing. Thanks for the comment 👍

What would you do in a situation where the thread length needs to be longer than a single insert? There doesn't seem to be different length inserts so im guessing the only solution would be to screw one in on top of the other.

@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 лет назад
+scsirob You are welcome. Sometimes you can remove the tang with some long nose pliers, other times it will not break off in blind holes- Sometimes I just leave the tang where it is. i machine a lot of plastics and non ferrous metals as well as steel, and i have to use helicoils to strengthen holes for bolts. Included in the helicoil kit is a pressure collar that fits over the isertion tool and butts upto the coil itself, this collar exerts even pressure for insertion.why didnt you use it?
@Dnasty1
@Dnasty1 2 года назад
I'm getting ready to use this for the first time on a stripped bolt hole for a drive belt tensioner. Great explanation i feel more comfortable attempting this now. I just had a question about the inserts they all seem to be the same size do i need to combine multiple coils for a longer hole? And would I be able to break the tang on a blind hole? I only have about a 3cm hole I am rethreading.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 2 года назад
No, never try to use more than one insert, as it's likely that the bolt will lock up. You can get longer inserts, but they might not be widely available. You can't break the tang in a blind hole, it will be fine. You can thread lock the insert into position, too! Best of luck with it.

@benhoppy
@benhoppy 9 лет назад
Excellent video, perfectly clear. I need to do a sump and as it's a blind hole, I was wondering about the tang, looked through the previous comments and saw you mention it could be impossible to get it out of a blind hole. Do you think if I tied some cotton to it and punched it through I may be able to get it? It seemed to come off so easy that I don't want to leave it on.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 9 лет назад
The problem is that the tang will be touching the material at the bottom of the blind hole, which means if you punch it the tang won't move as it will be hitting the metal. You might be able to snap it off with some long nose pliers?
@ruimvp
@ruimvp Год назад
Thank you. In an open ended hole there is the risk that the screw will make the helicoil go out when turning it, or the resistance of the helicoil outside thread is great than the inside? Or use threadlock in outside of helicoil?

I've not heard of helicoil before, i got the wurth time sert kit because you cut a recessed seat level with the top of the piece being re-theaded, in aluminium it stops more stripping also as it's cinched tight with the new thead insert & doesn't realy just on the cut thead & surrounding area as much, plus there's no mistake of pushing the new thread through & loosing it inside where you can't get. What is that last part with the punch supposed to do chez.

I'm afraid I don't have a chart for that particular brand, but helicoil sizes can be seen here- www.thorintl.com/Drill-Sizes-HeliCoils-Metric.shtml As for the tang you might be able to use some long nosed mole grips and grip the tang, then snap it off and pull it back out? Thanks for the comment

I stripped the threads to one of the bolts for the sump cover on a engine. It screws in fine. But once it gets somewhat tight it won't tighten any farther. Cause you said this won't work well in a blind hole. Is it possible to buy a shorter bolt so that it doesn't get into the bad threads. Pleas respond it makes a baseball sized puddle in a day.

thanks for the vid. I use helicoils since a long time and were always successful with them. Unfortunately i have to say 1. Helicoils original come in blue boxes and its a registered brand/technology from germany! Buy Original! 2. tapping thread should be done IMO when ever possible vertical to make 100% tapping straight. 3. its 1,5 turns in and 1 back, i couldnt hear the cracking sound of the tapping tool. thats what i learned 28years ago in mechanic school in germany.

Nice video. ...but isn't the support ring on the shaft you use to wind in the thread supposed to be on the bottom of the thread. I have heard that you are not suppose to wind in the thread by the tang. ...because if the tang accidentally breaks as you are half way down to where the tread should be sitting (as embedded) then you are stuck and have to spend hours to get it out. The tangs do break, as you just showed. What do you think?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 7 лет назад
Hi, the tang is there specifically to wind the insert into the threaded hole (as far as I am aware). Thanks for the comment ;-)
@Ken_Sweden
@Ken_Sweden 7 лет назад
You are right, that's true. I meant '...not suppose to wind in the thread 'only' by the tang'. In your case where you show well how it works in a big hole it's not a big deal not to use the support ring. However, I think the support ring is there to take off some tension on the tang. I read about a guy pushing in with ring supporting (in an motor block), and without. It was however a smaller insert, and without the support the tang broke when almost down (no hole on other side). After that it was very tricky to remove the insert. Cheers!

As an apprentice I was taught that dies need to be reversed to break the heel off, but taps simply screw in. The collar on the tool has an allen grub screw which should be moved up & secured using the allen key supplied with the kit. This is to centre the helicoil on the tool. Or is that unnecessary?
@ultimatehandyman

Most taps need backing off to break the chip, unless you use a machine tap. I've never used the collar on the insertion tool, I just wind them in (never had a problem in decades) Thanks for the comment 👍
