My name is Ian and this is part of a series documenting my helicopter training in the Robinson R-22. Follow along as I go from zero experience to my goal of becoming an instructor. This lesson's main focus is my introduction to (IFR) Instrument Flight Rules and getting used to flying the aircraft solely by referencing the instrument gauges. This video is not intended to be a substitute for instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor.

Thanks for making this video. I just got my airplane instrument 2 days ago and now I’m going for the Heli add-on. Nice to see a sneak peek of what to expect.

I fly MELI and Rotorcraft... a very good Rotorcraft pilot once told me... birds don't fly in the clouds... so why should I. However, I did get stuck in fog at night once once off the shore of Newport Beach CA. I usually fly out of the Seattle area,so I placed too much trust in the CFI. I was glad I had the IFR rating in fixed wing. Was flying a Bell 206 with IFR Capabilities. This event was a check ride with a CFI who didn't have a clue. I knew I was in trouble when the strobes bounced off the clouds creating some sort of stroboscopic effect and was threatening to blind us both. I turned the strobes off to hear, that's a good idea... sending green pilots out to check out another pilot at night over water was something I wouldn't repeat. It happened over twenty years ago and never forgot it. Lesson learned. Check out who is checking you out.

In answer to "birds don't fly in the clouds... so why should I?" ... I've been flying helos in the Miami area for over 12 years. In 2009, 2011, 2016, and 2018, 4 of my fellow helo pilots have had a turkey buzzard come through the window, 3 into the pilot's face. Those are the ones I know of. I'm sure there's more. So if birds don't fly in the clouds (or drones for that matter), maybe that's a reason to fly a helo into them!

Hey love your " Red Bull " Cab awesome today IMC - Training I did it on my Labtop never in a shopper at first time got sick than to get used too ! Have been Red Bull in Austria - Salzburg Hanger 7 epic to see all the shopper and airplanes.

Slightly off topic, but was this video done with Veracity Aviation? Just realized this R22 is 223MG, Ive flown it quite a few times at Veracity’s Pearland location, didn’t think I’d see it in a RU-vid video 🤙

my man props to you, that was a great intro to ifr flight. I just started mine last week, and everyone says I'm doing good on my first two flights but I can't match that level of precision that you hit during this video. any tips for a newby?

Hey thanks Will! Best advice I can give is keep that instrument scan going, and don't get fixated on one instrument for too long. This is especially easy to do when you're on the glide slope and you can end up neglecting air speed while trying to keep that HSI centered and on glide. Make sure when you're coming into your altitudes, start to level off about 50 feet before the altitude you're looking for so you don't bust through. I'm sure if everyone says you're doing good, you're doing good. Instrument flying is one of those things that seems daunting at first, but once you get a little familiar, it's pretty easy flying. Everything is black and white. You do what's on the chart and what ATC tells you and that's it. You doing it in a helicopter or fixed wing?

Critical Angle, helicopters at universal helicopters in prescott. Yeah i noticed i fixate alot on the ASI, the AI, and the altimeter.

yes sir, it's a bit weird because of the hydraulics, you don't get that feedback from the controls that you do in the 22. best thing about it is now I have no worry about running out of power when I need it.

you need a license to fly one lol, costs about 12,000-15,000 USD for Private pilot license and 45,000-55,000 USD to get your commercial rating in order to fly for work
