My name is Ian and this is part of a series documenting my helicopter training in Robinson helicopters. Follow along as I go from zero experience to flight instructor. Today's flight is my first time in the larger, 4 seater, R-44 helicopter as I get transition training from the R-22 that I've been flying up to this point.
This one is a little longer than usual, but that's just because it was almost a 2 hour flight and there were so many maneuvers we did, it was hard to edit them all out. This is a little out of order as far as when I recorded things sequentially, but I really wanted to share this video sooner than I would be able to normally get to it.
This video is not intended to be a substitute for instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor.

Imagine hydraulic failure in a ship 10 times as heavy. That cyclic would be a tree stump.
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 7 лет назад
Rotorcraft Pro buddy of mine flies HEMS in the EC135. They have dual hydraulics, but he said if they were to both somehow fail, you would have to apply so much force to the cyclic that you would snap it off before you would be able to affect any change in the rotor head.

This is another great video. I'm also flying the R44 now but I've found the hydraulics make the cyclic more sensitive that the R22 and it took me a while to get use to it. The glass cockpit in your chopper looks cool. Did it take long to get use to the layout?
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 6 лет назад
Ashley Muir thanks. The hydraulics do make it feel a little more sensitive, but I like it. Don’t get me wrong, the R22 is a blast, but it feels like wrestling a bull while the 44 feels a lot more refined and comfortable. The G500 is pretty awesome and did have a little bit of a learning curve, but everything is easier once you get the general hang of it.

Just like you, now I'm use to flying the 44 I am enjoying it. It is easier to hover than the 22 and the air conditioning is nice particularly in the Australian summer. I've being flying aircraft for 26 years now and helicopters for about 3 and you always have a soft spot for the aircraft you do your first solo in. That's why I will always like the 22
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 6 лет назад
I hear you on the air conditioning. That alone almost makes it worth double the price on those hot summer days....almost.

Who makes that timer on the cyclic? Also, your instructor saying "dive" when departing your off airport spot made me cringe, that's how you get a pushover from someone who has a misunderstanding/ forgets/ or lacks experience.

I could care less for air conditioning in a helicopter. I know I’d be wanting a radio to listen to but air conditioning could be good as well.

very interesting video.. not many of these wilderness-landing vids with instructions like this one.. it is allways interesting to listen to what to keep in mind during non-airport-helipad-landings..

Andreas Lindkvist well then I might just have to make an entire video with nothing but landing in weird/cool off-airport places in the 44. Sounds like fun to me!

Andreas Lindkvist very cool. I'm trying to limit 44 time just because it's so expensive though. Check out Bradley Friesen if you haven't seen his stuff yet. He flies his 44 in some pretty epic places.

Not entirely sure yet rt. The interest in the hats is a pretty recent thing so I've got to get something set up with a distributor to find out how to get them made economically. I will definitely let everyone know when I get that part figured out. Growing pains!

Do you like the bose A20's? I'm in the market for some new headsets, and didn't know what you thought of the bose headsets
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 7 лет назад
+Jayson Chappell I did a review talking about them. The A20's are a fantastic headset. The reason I went with the Zulu's was because of the price difference and the performance of the mic with the doors off in the helicopter with all the wind.
@JaysonChappell
@JaysonChappell 7 лет назад
Critical Angle yeah, understandable. I do a lot of flying in J-3 cubs and I didn't know which headset would be better for the window-down style of flying!

Professionally curious: why are you so attached to your mechanics gloves?
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 6 лет назад
Joshua Linn not sure if you’re talking about gloves in general or why Mechanix as a brand. As for brand, I actually moved away from Mechanix since they are a little bulky and seem to wear pretty fast. I use the PIG Delta gloves now and they’re great. Really form fitting and touch screen compatible. As for why gloves? It’s personal presence, but I like the better grip they give me on the controls. Keeps my hands warmer in the winter and less sweaty in the summer. When using the touch screen in the 44 or an iPad in any of the helicopters, it also prevents finger smudges from getting all over the screen. When the sun reflects off of those, it’s harder to see it.

@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 7 лет назад
Wasn't too bad actually. I did the oral portion last week, but couldn't fly due to thunderstorms rolling in so all I had to do yesterday the flying portion. Went up, did the three different approaches, and everything went great. Got lucky on the weather cause the ceiling was getting pretty low. If we had gone an hour or two later, we probably would not have been able to do it.

@CriticalAngle

Rowdy Broomstick started training at the beginning of the year. My time table is to be an instructor before the year is over. Should be pretty obtainable at the pace I'm going.

Great work on the 44, your set downs were awesome! I found the hydraulics so much more challenging to set down with than the 22. Nice 44, is it a Raven II? Have seen a glass cockpit one yet. Also, love the CA swag.
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 7 лет назад
kiltedpiper thanks! My pickups are a lot better now as well. You done any hydraulics off hovering and set downs? Now that's a challenge! Still have to make all the gentle movements but with a ton of force. Yep, it's a Raven II. The hats turned out pretty sweet!
@kiltedpiper98
@kiltedpiper98 7 лет назад
Critical Angle , ug, the hydraulics off sucks. For me the collective is the hardest with hydraulics off.
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 7 лет назад
Hah, yeah it feels like you're trying to lift the weight of the helicopter, it's insane. My buddy who flies the EC135 said that if both hydraulic systems fail in that, you would have to apply so much pressure to the cyclic that it would snap it right off before you could affect the rotor system.
@kiltedpiper98
@kiltedpiper98 7 лет назад
Critical Angle autos are much easier in the 44 though.
@CriticalAngle
@CriticalAngle 7 лет назад
kiltedpiper oh yeah dude it's like slow motion in the 44.
