In my helicopter flyover videos of California lots of commenters have asked if it’s legal for me to fly at night. Not only is it legal but it’s extremely fun. In the hopes of spotting the glowing, bioluminescent waves that agitated phytoplankton has brought to Southern California’s shores I conducted a night flight on May 2nd 2020. While the glowing waves were clearly visible to my eyes they did not show on camera. Instead I flew over Long Beach, the Port of Los Angeles, and Downtown LA to see how they look from the air at night.

The port of Los Angeles and adjacent Port of Long Beach account for almost 350 billion dollars worth of cargo (nearly 200 million tons) and account for almost 25% of all goods entering the United States. If you buy something that is made in China, there is a very good chance it came through here. Fun fact about the Vincent Thomas Bridge - it is the only suspension bridge supported entirely on piles, which means they stuck the support beams into the ground like you or I would do with a stick on wet sand. It's also been in Gone in 60 Seconds, Inception, and To Live and Die in LA, among others. Thanks Micah for the night view!

I used to take first-time fliers up at night out of Torrance. I'd depart to the west and tell them to keep looking straight ahead as I crossed the beach and stayed low over the water. I'd do a 180 and climb, revealing the city lights of Los Angeles in an endless carpet. It never failed to get oohs & ahhs - absolutely spectacular. Thanks again for memories, Micah.

My girlfriend and I lost our cat (Remi) on the morning of the 3rd from a week long battle with a complete kidney failure. This video is incredibly interesting to me as it snapshots exactly what Los Angeles looked like while we were trying to save her just over the hill in Sherman Oaks. The world had stopped for us, our only focus was on trying to save her... and it's really touching and beautiful to have a record of what her last night looked like from above. Thank you for posting these flight videos. This one in particular really means a lot. Truly, thank you.

I am a very non current fixed wing rated pilot that took my lessons out of Long Beach Airport. While working on cross country time I would fly to Bracket at night for a milk shake and time my return to arrive over Disneyland at 9:30 to have the fireworks shooting up towards me. Yes, it was legal in the 70's. Then I was lined up for 25R at Long Beach. I loved night flying and your Long Beach videos are bringing back some awesome memories. Thank you.

I just recently discovered your you tube channel. Back in 1980 I purchased a portable VHS VCR and camera. The Recorder weighed 21 lbs and the camera weighed 13 lbs.I was invited to video tape some friends as they went hot air ballooning. I was happy shooting the whole set-up inflating of balloons. Then following them in the chase van. When they invited me to get in the balloon with my video equipment I was a little hesitant. But I did it and became instantly enamored with the feeling of looking down at the earth from 300' up. I was in video shooting heaven. I went up several times with them. Loving the video tape I shot. Next I duc taped my camera to the landing strut of a friends cessna. We did touch and go landings at several L.A. area airports. Then watched the video tape with fascination. Seeing your helicopter videos has brought back all those cool memories. Thanks for sharing your videos with us.

Thank You Micah for the epic view of the City Of Angels at night. It brought me memories in 2013 I had total power failure in a C182 and I flew from Down Town L.A to El Monte Airport (KEMT) with out lights or Radio, The tower was closed and I could not turn the Airport lighting on to see the airport. It was the scariest moment in flying for me, specially when you have passangers. Keep flying Low And Slow My Friend.

I really enjoy your flyover videos. Before you were born there was this tawdry but fabulous TV show called Dynasty. The building used for the Denver Carrington building exterior shots is the Bank of America building you flew past toward the end of downtown, just to the left. I always recognize it due to its shape and the fact that, while it sits on a normal rectangular lot, the building is set at an angle to the others nearby. Great video!

The reason there are no airplanes is because the nighttime configuration is “over ocean”. So traffic landing LAX comes in over the water landing on the north complex and departures come off the south complex. It may have changed some, I retired 6 years ago. But I worked that airspace for over 20 years. Thank you for letting me see what all those visual reporting points actually look like.
