Hi my friend! I've just bought an helios 44m-7 and followed your tutorial on how to put it in manual aperture with success! But my focus ring is not working and it looks like it has no grip over the lens which does not come in and out. Do you think that I have to go throught the whole disassembly process or I can just repair it from the front?

Excellent tutorial - so clear, so comprehensive and so easy to understand. Your English is excellent, and I'm in awe at your camera work, always focused on the lens and what you're doing. The focus ring on my Helios 44M-7 was slipping while turning at infinity and close up, and re-lubrication solved the problem perfectly. (As you warned...the tiny ball bearing fell out, but thankfully I found it!!). Many thanks

Modern lenses are made this way to stop people from opening them for repair and cleaning. Repairmen use rubber cups. They grip to the ring and allow for easier turning/unscrewing. You can find them on ebay: 10-15$ for one cup or around $40 for the entire set.

@@RetroFotoHouse thank for the feed back on this... I managed to.fix the focus ring. But I cleaned the lenses and I think I mis assembled the back lense elelmes / parts. More parts came out that what u show on video cleaning back lenses. I looked up diagram of lenses in system think I have them in right except possibly for the black spacer ring on 1st element. Given trying many different assemblies it still takes blurry photos, even though my camera is showing in focus by focus peaking. Wondering I'd I mis assembled front lense assembly or didn't clean lenses properly. Not that I did not regressed the focusing mechanism. Only pulled lense group put and cleaned from, then pulled back lense group and cleaned them. So wondering if I goofed the optical block assembly somehow? Hello Retro Foto House. Very informative video. I have a question. I have found a very good looking Helios 44M-4 lens on a Zenit XP-12 camera, but the aperture blades don't move at all whether I rotate the aperture ring or the push the pin at the back. It is wide open at all times. The camera itself looks good but with some fungal growth in the viewfinder and on the mirror. Mechanically it seemed to be working fine. My question is if I should get it (the lens) and try to open and repair it by myself. It is going to cost me less than 10$ if I did. In fact the camera and the lens both together would cost me less than 25$. What would you suggest?

Hello @@RetroFotoHouse, Thanks for your response. I got the camera last week. I got the lens cleaned and set up correctly from a local camera repair shop I found that repairs analog cameras. The aperture blades had oil on them which was causing them to malfunction. The technician also cleaned the camera's mirror. But he said they don't undertake Russian camera repairs because of their weird setup, so that is all he could do as far as servicing goes. He also said the penta-prism is damaged, so viewing will be difficult. I think I might try to open and clean the fungus on the viewfinder myself. I also got compatible batteries today and the light meter LEDs are also lighting up when I put them in. Looks like it will work. I'll run a test roll through it to see how it goes. If nothing, it'll still make a great show piece at home. All in all a great deal for less than 30$. Thanks and cheers. Best wishes of Christmas and New Year!

I have such a lens. The Optical block just came out while focussing. It was not attached. with screws and threaded into the focussing block. There are four screws in the focussing block but those do not line up with the three lugs in the optical block. Name ring says Helios 44m-6 with valdai logo and serial number on body is 1992. Is this a different version? Maybe not even a 44-m6 but M4? Krasnogorsk? Picture: live.staticflickr.com/65535/50143989811_cb2c242707_4k.jpg

@@cdavey061 Oh. That's a pain. Sorry, but I've not taken the aperture mechanism apart yet - and don't intend to unless it breaks! Does the video have any close ups on that? It's been a long time and I can't recall.

Hi! At 11.49 are visible screws holding together black focusing ring and inner yellow brass part. You need to tighten them. Problem is solved
