Hellboy returns to the big screen....er.....on the small screen, for the 4th live action adaptation, and 3rd casting. Here's my review for HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN! #Hellboy #HellboyTheCrookedMan
For real, I had no idea this movie existed until my notification for Jeremy's review. Also: what's with that subtitle making it sound like another Conjuring universe movie? 🙄😆
@@TobeyFan1984 Yes I know, I was only joking b/c my immediate thought was of The Crooked Man movie I once heard was going to be intended for that universe, so I wondered why Hellboy apparently beat them to it.
Del Torro's version is the best version ever and I wish that he could just get the ending to his trilogy out there. Unfortunately, apparently from what I read Mike Magnolia doesn't like Del Torro's version. Which sucks, but he's the one who holds the rights to the character, so... 🤷♂️
Hellboy really just needs to be a full-on animated series on Netflix or something. It can be done on live-action but obviously it hasn't been doing so good. At least in animation they can go all out with it.
If Will Smith and Martin Lawrence can return to a franchise that is 20 years old and it can MAKE MONEY, we SHOULD get a new trilogy with Ron Pearlman/Guillermo del Torro. Let’s call it: 1) HELLBOY: APOCALYPSE Part 1 2) HELLBOY: APOCALYPSE Part 2 3) HELLBOY: APOCALYPSE Part 3
@@EdWedgiewell you have to have some media literacy and see this hellboy movie isn’t made by the same studio as the others it’s made by a small independent studio with no money for advertising.
0:19 Crank- a movie for those of you who don’t know, is about an agent who has this thing in heart that’ll kill him if he doesn’t maintain a high level of adrenaline, prompting him to do some crazy things, including doing the devil’s tango in public with his ex-girlfriend. A truly unhinged pile of horseradish
Hellboy: the Crooked Man has issues, but it has my respect. Most of its shortcomings are due to its shoestring budget. There are so many movies with budgets of +100 mil, which can’t stick the landing. When I see something that has very little to work with, but does the absolute best it can with that, that movie gets my respect. Also, felt this was a pretty good movie that conveyed the right tone for the character. Maybe smaller budgets (not this small) are the way to go with this property.
@@Ytinasniiable precisely! Which means that decent movies *can* be done on a shoestring budget. But needs the right people with the right imagination and skills.
This is such a dark and interesting story and I'd really love to see a significant budget put into it. Too bad with how previous hellboy adaptations went that would be very hard. You know it's rough when they don't even have money to advertise this movie.
Maybe it's because they planned to go straight to streaming in the US but if I hadn't been checking cinema times for any upcoming films I'd like to check out (transformers and my hero academia) I wouldn't even have known this film was a thing. Less than 2 weeks after release and most places have already stopped showing the film, which doesn't help either (films can't do well if they barely get a chance to show once a day for a week). Shame as I really enjoyed it.
As much as I love the Del Toro Hellboy movies, this one is the closest to the comics. Hellboy was never an action hero like he is in those older movies. He's more of a detective investigating strange x-file like phenomena and folklore.
I get your point about Hellboy not being an action hero….BUT I recently finished reading the entire Monster-Sized Hellboy book, and Hellboy really does resort to doing a lot of punching to solve issues despite not being an action hero.
Massive Hellboy fan here. I'm so down for smaller Hellboy adventures, a ton of Hellboy stories are a monster/ghost/vampire of the week sort of deal. Crooked Man is an odd choice though, even in the canon it's an unusual one because it's American folklore and not European mythology.
@@Firenutz Dude, you know what I really want? Love, Death & Robots, but Hellboy! Give a bunch of animation studios the chance to make Hellboy shortfilms, it'd rule.
@@Firenutzthat sounds INTERESTING. If the HELLBOY film franchise were still around, BRPD would definitely be like the LAW & ORDER version of that universe 😀
Magnola has been involved with every Hellboy movie or at least is marketed as being involved. Golden Army is the only one he was not pleased with because he felt that his time working on that film was wasted. Ironically, I think it is often considered to be the best Hellboy movie.
The one time I noticed the budget was that low was the CGI of the raccoon...Otherwise, everything else was pretty good, nothing over the top. I think this reboot of Hellboy is more down to earth and it fells like it's more accurate to the comics but I really can't say since I don't remember reading the comics, haha. I just feel like it is.
@@yammt3148 Not for me. It`s exactly like the comics go. Del Toro`s Hellboy is not the character of the comics. It`s a slick looking marvel superhero movie.
i didn’t think you’d review this one 😅, but I’m glad you did. I love the del toro movies but this IS the closest thing to the comics yet. It’s for sure made for the comic fans, but I hope those who are still on the fence can give it a chance. 🙏🏻
The "horror movie with a comic book character vibe" is something I deeply want with a Ghost Rider film/tv series. Primarily just a full-on horror story to the point you forget it's a comic book adaptation, until the Ghost Rider comes in to fuck shit up. Or better yet, the Ghost Rider himself ups the horror, but for the demons/evil in the film. I just feel like that would work out so well, in the right hands.
We desperately need horror movies with strong male protagonists like Hellboy, Ghost Rider, Blade, Ash Williams. Ones who are badass enough to punch out the Horror itself. I am tired of usual dumb college kids or women as protagonists who spend majority of their time scared, running away, searching for mystical object or completing the right ritual.
True@@SpaceGhost2733 cuz we should really respect mfs if they don't wanna do characters anymore and budgets of movies to make the movie cuz i know ron pearlman is one expensive actor to hire
@@KorrinBeck I just bet everyone leaves with a smile after meeting you. They’ll probably say that at your funeral in 70 years. “This person always made everyone, even strangers, feel special.”
@@dodgyyoutuber9560 Whoa, someone has insecurities to just suddenly start flailing like that from just a simple comment. Hope your life improves and you stop hating yourself.
Oddly enough, your review reflects something I said in my own. With you not being a Hell Boy comics person, your reaction is what I expected. Nice to see that play out.
For people who actually enjoy the Hellboy comics and the way the character was made to be portrayed - this movie was spectacular. It closely followed its source material and the character of Hellboy was just that, HELLBOY! It's not the weird, Del Toro superhero-wannabe version of Hellboy that is the reason Mignola will not let Del Toro touch the character again. The Del Toro movies, while fun, are NOT the Hellboy character Mignola created. Not even close.
Please review some old movies like Rocky, Mean Streets, Saturday Night Fever, Carrie, Closed Encounters of The Third Kind, Mackena's Gold, Urban Cowboy etc.
The Dollars Trilogy. Back to the Future. Terminator, T2, Total Recall. Yeh I'd like to see J review some old classic from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s too. Right on, man!
In my old job, they spent countless money renovating the offices. After one year, they renovated the same place again, spending even more money. When I asked why this was happening, my manager said nothing and winked his eye. Probably something similar is happening in Hollywood.
Pointlessly making expenditures and "improvements" to increase an asset's value while justifying tax breaks? Yeah, sounds like corporations gonna corp.
Since Ron Perlman is old and Guillermo del Toro has ventured in artsy animation…I want to see a r rated animation horror version of the original movies.
@@1981troyboy I know the context of the films aren’t really anything like the comics, the comics were pure horror but Del Toro films were more fantasy fun adventure. I’m just saying if he made another film it should be darker with the world of supernatural being normalized like comics. Also Hellboy should be more matured and more in line with his comics personality.
I really appreciate your comedic honesty 😂. You said everything I thought this movie was gonna be, I’ma check it out because I won’t be surprised with the bad stuff 😂😂
I always loved Ron P as Hellboy but last time I saw him he was having a nervous breakdown on his back patio! 😂 Hope he's gotten better! I'm actually looking forward to this! Great review JJ!

So crank was bad but honestly I think they knew it would be because the like the sleeping with his gf in public the whole scene feels like a wink and a nod, sort of a we know it sucks so let's have fun type of situation
"Dollar store Demon Knight, without the Billy Zane charisma." Perfectly understood the tone you were describing. Demon Knight is a surprisingly fun movie with a bunch of solid performances, but Zane outshines them all and without him, it just wouldn't be the same.
But that DSLR was jailbroken with Blackmagic latern, which Canon doesn't recommend doing if you do not know what to do or set up. This gives you a 14-bit raw video, and ever since, I have done it, too. 3:34
Watched sleepy hallow, the wolfman(2010), smile, haunted mansion (2023) & Salem's lot(2024). Halloween themed movies. Still got more to binge through 😊
@@ogreface8from what I heard the reason the third Hellboy film didn’t happen was the studios weren’t giving Del Toro the budget he needed, they were reducing him to a producer not a director, and Del Toro couldn’t win the fight with them. And Ron Perlman I’ve heard mixed messages between “if he ain’t directing I’m not doing it”, to him being a bit too old now to deal with the heavy makeup and having to bulk up for the role.
@@masilomoshesh1475 Honestly surprised with his age....I remember him in no makeup in Alien Resurrection but he didn't seem old there.... Oh shit that confusing film came out in '97, 27 years ago!!! He was "just" 47.....lots of Sevens here, he should invest in Catholic Stock
I had not heard a thing about this movie until your review popped up, I regularly watch and subscribe to more than half a dozen movie/entertainment channels, how is this possible?
I saw this movie about three weeks ago, and I actually liked it a lot more than the other movies that came before. The story was surprisingly written well especially since it comes from the source material.
Honestly, I was wondering if this would even seen the light of day given the ai fubar nuttiness that happened with the production. Thanks for the review!
I have extremely high hopes with James Gunn's Superman. A great Superman film hasn't been seen since Superman 2. Maybe James Gunn will reinvent DC for good.
If you think James gunn will do good, you obviously never read superman comic. Red flag from gunn's superman movie 1) gunn admit to not following source material 2) superman legacy will cramped with D list JL member because gunn didn't know how to direct solo superhero movie 3) his movie will be another guardian of the galaxy but this time swap each character with DC Before you said I'm haters, I love his slither movie and I want him to return back to that genre. Since super (2010), he didn't direct nothing else but superhero movie which is worrisome because every superhero movie he did basically same jokes if you watch them all back to back. How to fixed superman legacy 1) follow Source material, they have 85 years of source material they can choose from but my favourite always been earth one post crisis although it's dark and serious but I can see gunn should do earth 2 post crisis because it's much more light hearted and family friendly 2) replaced D list JL character with superman side character. Martian manhunter, Steel or superboy can be use if he want to 3) never copy paste MCU jokes and formula into DC, create your own style that fits with DC. superman supposed to be conservative while Lois Lane supposed to be liberal. Use that as yin and yang for their interaction and never reuse Starlord x Gamora relation ship because it's not how clark x Lois supposed to have Finally, hired a better fight choreographer. I didn't impress at all when GoTG 3 finale fight scene because it's felt something is off.
I personally really dug this one! Going back to the indie horror roots of the comics was genius, the atmosphere is unrelentingly eerie, and Hellboy feels like his truest self! Sure it is cheaply made, but honestly I think it adds to it more than it takes away and The Crooked Man himself is SCARY AF! It's going on my personal Best list for the year! I had a BLAST with this one!!
Yeah, I just noticed something. Jeremy has progressed to the point where he has probably given 1, maybe 2 awesometaculars this year. And it's October. Jahns is becoming Yahtzee for movies and I couldn't be more thrilled.
"Our flawed last best hope. How are those not the coolest characters." I find the Trump show to be entertaining as well. This season in particular is crazy!
Love your content keep going with the spooky month but to be honest quite surprise you haven't reviewed the substance. Hopefully it will come in the next weeks.
Thanks for the review. Definitely going to watch Crooked Man on streaming. Just watched Shock Waves, Longlegs, Phantasm and Son of Frankenstein. All good movies.
"We didn’t go into this referencing any of the other movies. We went into it referencing absolutely one thing, and that is the original Mike Mignola comic book. We wanted to take The Crooked Man and adapt it faithfully," the director explained. "That means it’s a period piece, it's a younger Hellboy, and it has no relation to the other films." My approach was to have an audience of one. If Mike Mignola feels like this is his Hellboy, then I feel like we succeeded."
My horror binge so far: 1. The Sadness 2. Terrifier 3. Terrifier 2 4. Never Let Go 5. V/H/S Beyond 6. The Blair Witch Project 7. Eden Lake 8. Wolf Creek
Hellboy is paranormal investigator in comic. He was hired to solves problem with demon and monster. People praised this one as following source material although they feels weird because the creator who did the script choose one of story that happened in America while he mostly investigate in europe
