I test Helldivers 2 across 5 different Ryzen processors to see how the game behaves. I use my RTX 4090 so the limiting factor remains the CPU no matter what. The result are quite interesting.
UPDATE:
I have retested the 5900X and 3700X since the results in this video deserved more scrutiny and the results are quite interesting. • Helldivers 2 - Ryzen 5...

Hey all thank you so much for watching the video and leaving your feedback. I've just uploaded a new video re-testing the 5900X (12 and 6 core) and 3700X making sure to do the same exact mission since the results in this video were unexpected. There is actually a pretty noticeable difference between the two. Here's the link if interested. Thank you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Zj_oi3lo2o.htmlsi=J24URkNGe5ARGigp

Hey man. Great video and great time to post it as latest games seem to be more CPU bound than GPU. I'm still on my old 2600x, and it's time for an upgrade as I see strong limitations in very recent games like Hell Divers or CB77FL. The 7800x3D is my next logical choice!
@TerraWare

At this point you may as well wait to see what the next Ryzen is and also keep an eye out on Intel since their next CPU's sound like they will be pretty good. You will have to upgrade platform regardless so. Unless you go with a 5800X 3D lol which is a really good gaming CPU if you wanted to save a bunch of money.
@MetatronsCube23

just buy a 5500 for 90$ or 5600 for 135$. You will need a new Mobo, and ram if you upgrade the the AM5 7800X3d. Update your motherboard bios to the most current, and you should be able to drop any 5000 series chips as an instant upgrade. You can get a 5700X3d if you want to spend a little more. You could get more or better DDR4 ram for cheap right now too. I dropped a 5500, 32gb of 3200Mhz ram, and a RX 6600 into my old B350 gen 1 ryzen motherboard and it plays cyberpunk and helldivers fine. Wait for the newer 7000 series AM5 stuff to get cheap.

@geronimo5537 2 месяца назад
If budget is a concern, wait until the next gen is coming out then you can get the 78003D for hundreds cheaper than now. Plus you will need an entirely new computer so all the other parts are going to be expensive. Expect around the $2000-5000 mark in todays inflation for a high tier gaming build. That is unless you buy older hardware. Which prices are not that much lower than current tbh.

I would hold off on getting the 7800X3D because the Ryzen 9000 series is going to release soon and you’re going to have to change out your motherboard and ram in the process. To hold you over I’d get a 5000 series Ryzen chip like a 5700X3D.

Great video. This is the main reason why I upgraded from Ryzen 5800X to 7800X3D. Helldivers 2 is a CPU intensive game. My 4080 super usage hovers only around 60-70% while the CPU is mostly in 80-90%. Temporary fix I did was to use DLDSR. By having a higher resolution than 1440p, it increases the GPU utilization.

Funny thing is, playing the game from linux it's not very cpu intensive at all and my 7900xtx usually averages around 120-140 fps in 4 player games getting full gpu utilization, very very rare situations it can drop down to around 70.

I’m in kind of a similar circumstance. I currently run a 5800X with a 4070 Ti. I feel that I’m not ready to switch out my motherboard and ram quite yet. Maybe I’ll get a 5800X3D or just wait for Ryzen 9000 to release.

@@badmoose01 A 7800x3d will resell for very near it's purchase price after ryzen 9000 comes out. Ryzen 9000 will be out later this summer or early fall, so you could wait, or you could get a 7000 and sell it later allowing you to avoid the early launch issues and madness of trying to get your hands on a newly launched product. It's always best to wait 3-4 months after a product launches, or be prepared and willing to deal with some weirdness.

Great video and congrats on 1k subs! Love these types of videos and it's rare to see the big/popular benchmarkers doing them. The 5900X results seem really odd as you said. The CPU usage is actually higher on the 5900X compared to the 3700X which makes no sense, especially when you consider that the FPS is the same. Could it be to do with the 2 CCD's on the 5900X? Maybe could disable one CCD and see if it makes any difference for the 5900x. The 7800X3D is also getting hammered here. I don't have one myself but I think that's the most power draw I have seen on that CPU, but it is still more efficient than all the other CPU's.

Thanks. Yea the 3700X vs 5900X results was very surprising, so surprising I actually ended up putting it back on my AM4 PC and double checking the numbers I was getting before publishing this and they matched. @@magikarp2063 You could be right but I have tried to look at this, keeping task manager open on the other monitor while gaming and seeing the amount of CPU the anti cheat is utilizing and its barely any while gaming. CPU utilization is weird in this game though. My 5900X CPU usage is often the same or high than my 3700X and the FPS is practically the same between the two. It kind of doesnt make sense. The 3700X is previous gen with 8 cores and the 5900X 12 core and has improved IPC. I wish I had some Intel CPU's to test but this is just CPU's Ive had over the years I held on to. The Ryzen platform was just easy to upgrade to so I stuck with it.

The vertical 3D cache will benefit only when the game utilizes it. Especially if the game isn't optimized properly, and requires high-volume access to system memory. If the Dev did their job, optimizing their games before launch, you won't need that large L3 cache. In this case, I see hell divers 2 is utilizing the last level cache in a good way

@@TerraWare Its very strange for 5900X isn't faster then 3700X while cpu limited. 12 cores does not matter vs 8 cores in gaming but there is significant IPC gains between the 2 generations. Its probobly a number of issues at the same time.

Edit: I saw your pinned comment were you retest the 3700x & 5900x series and end up noticing about a 20fps improvement. So maybe that is still something to consider. Great video. It could be more informative if you use the same tier in each generation. but I understand this isn't a sponsored video. You used what you had at hand. The 5900X is a particular special case, its CCD has only 6 cores, the same as 5600, and there's infinite fabric adding latency between the two CCDs. It's tricky when compared with 3700X or 5800X with 8-core CCD.

Maybe I'm just not paying attention when things get crazy but I'm pretty sure my 5800x3D and 4090 at the same settings are staying above 100 FPS . I also suspect there's something way off with the 5900x result here especially if 3D cache doesn't do that much in this game. (Going in I would have honestly predicted a bigger boost going from 3000 to 5000 than 2000 to 3000)

Your video and testing were fantastic! At the 3 minute and 33 second mark, you mentioned that the bottleneck is on the CPU, but it's only utilizing around 45-50% of its capacity. It might be worth considering that the bottleneck could actually be related to RAM throughput until the CPU usage reaches around 90%.
@TerraWare
@TerraWare 20 дней назад
It could be, ram, cpu instructions per clock (IPC), frequency a combination of factors your system or even the game engine in some cases preventing your GPU from running maxed out. Unfortunately you cant really measure a CPU bottleneck in the same way as GPU since game engines don't utilize the CPU fully in the same way they do GPU's. Games tend to not utilize all cores and threads evenly and most games are still very single core dependent. So you may have an 8 core CPU and one or two may be at 90% but the rest are at 30% for example. The total CPU usage will be the average of all cores and threads if that makes sense. So you could be CPU limited even though TOTAL CPU use isn't at 90%+ A good indication of being CPU limited is when your GPU isn't able to run maxed out at 98/99% if that makes sense. CPU limited, system limited it implies the same thing essentially.

@TerraWare
@TerraWare 2 месяца назад
Yes so the way CPU bottlenecks work, or presents itself in the performance metrics is different to that of the GPU (graphics card). With the graphics card its easy if you are at 99% your are GPU bound, basically the graphics card is the limit to your performance. If the GPU usage drops below 99% (in majority of cases) you are CPU bound, which is a term that generally encompasses your processor or your ram, your system basically. Unlike GPU's CPU's arent fully utilized by game engines in the same way, games are more single core dependent, cache and IPC sensitive so you could be CPU bound even if you are only utilizing 40% or 60% of your CPU. What we look at to determine a CPU bottleneck is primarily GPU utilization, if it drops below 99% your performance is being limited by your system.

Great video But If I may, the 5900X was probably not a good CPU to represent the 5000 series. It is comprised of two 6-core dies(CCDs). Information has to jump from one die/CCD to another during processing. This introduces latency. If you were to have wanted this to be apples to apples, perhaps the 5700X or the 5800X would have been a better choice here. Same for the 2600X. Perhaps we could have had the 2700X shown off here for the 2000 series.
@TerraWare
@TerraWare 6 дней назад
While I dont personally feel the two 6 core latency would make much of a difference I can only test what I have although I do get where you are coming from. I did a follow up to this video, link in the pinned comment, where I tested the 5900X as a 6 core and performance was practically the same, which isn't a shocker as all Ryzen 5000's perform practically the same in the many benchmarks here on YT with the exception of the X3D
@Aurummorituri
@Aurummorituri 2 месяца назад
Pretty cool, but also pretty flawed. You went from six cores to eight cores, and then to dual-six cores, and then back to eight. Of course the 5900X is going to suck with that infinity fabric in the way. A 5700X would have performed a lot better with eight cores on a single die instead of six.
@TerraWare
@TerraWare 2 месяца назад
You have to realize this isnt normal behavior though. In every other game I have seen any Ryzen 5000 part is consistently ahead of 3000, regardles of core count or CCD. Just did Last Epoch video, the 5900X is consistently around 30% faster than the 3700X. I only have a 5900X for Ryzen 5000 so I cant test how an 8 core would compare but based off the comments I have received everyone's been saying their CPU is consistently pegged at 100% and people generally not being happy with the performance. If we look at Hardware Unboxed's comparisons of Ryzen 5000's in gaming they are practically pretty much the same in gaming so this was a very interesting comparison, for me anyway since it was unexpected.

The problem isn't the 2600. it isn't the 7800x3d. It's the game, it's not optimized, and this is well known. It runs like total shit. the 2600 can run NEARLY EVERY game at around 60 min. No problem. This game runs horribly.

This, why is no one acknowledging this??? So many post on helldivers reddit and discord asking what the hell is going after dropping tons of patch. just google it. When the game first came out it sits easily at 120+ fps now it throttles to 60-70 and dropping below 50 on helldive mission. 80% CPU utilization whilst GPU sits below 40%, the only to reverse it to use super sampling or ultra super sampling but suffer in fps drop. RTX 4070 Super, R5 5800x3d, 2x8gb 3600Mhz cl 16.

Ah yes the classic cpu utilization at 4k test. The best way to test cpu utilization. 😂 Bro test at 1080p for a true cpu test. You won’t be wondering why you’re getting odd results anymore. Besides upgrading from a 7700x to a 78003D is such a waste of money. You deserve to get ripped off.

@@TerraWare look ill apologize for coming off rudely. You don’t deserve to be ripped off. Thats part of why i got heated at all because I don’t think people should be ripped off. I let my passion get the better of me. But I still don’t agree that paying an extra 300-350$ for a 30fps gain when you already have a cpu capable of running most modern titles on max settings at 60 to 100 fps. It’s gonna take a long time of use before it pays itself off in power efficiency, and if you upgrade every year it probably never will.

@@Frenchtoastedfruitloops All good 😃 I wanted these CPUs for the channel and I like to play around with them. Thing with testing Helldivets is a difficult task because of its procedurally generated inconsistent nature. 3700x and 5900X perform very similar in this video. I retested them in a different video in my pinned comment and got different more expected results. But to your point if you have a 7700X already the X3D doesn't make a ton of sense, especially with new Ryzen 9000's in the horizon

Believe you me I've double checked and triple checked. My previous 5900X results for this game are same, others with 5000 cpu are getting similar performance with 8 cores running at 100%.

They are woke because they banned you? Maybe you was being annoying. Enjoy overpaying for the same performance. But but Ray Trace…. Was a gimmick with the 20 series. Still a gimmick with the 40 series.

@@XDaWsOnX2 no, they are woke, or at least their twitter rep is/was. All around the bud light/Dylan debacle. I ran AMD cards for over 20 years, super impressed with my NVIDIA and will never give AMD another dollar.
