I don’t fell bad for her at all beacuse she killed a mother was about to kill the baby then traumatized the poor child for life then she tried to force someone to marry her or burn in hell so I feel no sympathy for her
I know Frollo was just a perv, but this version makes things different. Like she's scared that she's a lesbian, and not only doesn't accept her sexuality, but thinks that she'll go to hell for it. Furthermore, she's convinced she's straight and that she's cursed or bewitched. It kinda seems she's mostly acting out of fear more than anything else
@@greyblueme9711 Well, it's true, but the church used to do that as well! It was just the normal procedure when they THOUGHT someone was bewitched or possessed ...
@@evantyler8647 actually this whole song has 2 Deep Catholic meanings one is in the form of a prayer that is broken up and use as lyrics in between ( the prayer is used in the song but the song it self is contradicted by the prayer ) , and the other occurs in the scene where the guard informs that esmeralda is gone.
So like, my girlfriend sent me this video and, as a giant Disney nerd in general, this was already my favourite villain song, but the idea of it being from the perspective of some sort of nun or just of a woman for that matter adds an entire other layer to this already fantastic song, on top of that the vocals and visuals are fantastic and so damn powerful, and dear god I'm actually tearing up just... wow.
@Ainsley Pinckard I love most versions of this song. and it doesnt matter if its male about female vis versa or female about female. either way this song is about a super religous christan falling to "sin".
This, this is one of the most fascinating ideas, a woman so driven by her religious beliefs but when ecountering a sin and falling for said sin it brings her to either have it all to herself or for no one to have it. Interesting twist on Frollo's story.
I love how her hair gets messier and messier as the song progresses, signifying her spinning into insanity :0000 I've watched this at least 17 times now, this was absolutely gorgeous!! ;0;
I freaking love this animatic. How her actions remind me of Frollo's motivations, but has that underlying battle of "oh god, what is my sexuality?" Also at 1:52 when she shifts the blame to Esmeralda as the source of her desire and thus her sin, how the flame goes from this individual to the monster or demon that the song implies
Meeee being born a hard core Christian with my first female crush [Edit] Didn't expect so much response or likes 1yr later 😳 3.4k likes and 51 comments. I should add for those going through same that is def important have a great an positive support system. Find friends who will be there for you [this may mean friends outside your faith. This is okay 👌] and remember god loves EVERYONE and created/made all of us. The divide is made by man :3 if your church or family can't accept you as true self know that I do and can even see some in comments who feel same. You are not alone. I am Pan [possibly poly? 👀] btw if anyone was wondering or something.
Not a hardcore christian but same.... you know without wanting to burn her at a stake of course. God i would never have wished harm on her. But I certainly wished it on me. Frollo should of manned up and took responsibility for his feelings instead of blaming Esmerelda.
Beata Maria You know I am a righteous man Of my virtue I am justly proud Beata Maria You know I'm so much purer than The common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd Then tell me, Maria Why I see her dancing there Why her smoldering eyes still scorch my soul I feel her, I see her The sun caught in her raven hair Is blazing in me out of all control Like fire Hellfire This fire in my skin This burning desire Is turning me to sin It's not my fault I'm not to blame It is the gypsy girl The witch who sent this flame It's not my fault If in God's plan He made the devil so much Stronger than a man Protect me, Maria Don't let this siren cast her spell Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone Destroy Esmeralda And let her taste the fires of Hell Or else let her be mine and mine alone Hellfire Dark fire Now gypsy, it's your turn Choose me or Your pyre Be mine or you will burn God have mercy on her God have mercy on me But she will be mine Or she will burn!
I like to imagine that Frollo hears what she imagines of what the guard is saying in the song due to her obsession, but what they're actually saying. "Mistress Frollo, we could hear you. We could hear you singing your song about being lesbian. Everywhere.."
Wow. The gender swap really changes the meaning. A holy woman discovers her love for a gypsy girl, but gets stuck in a Battle against her self and society. She loves Esmeralda but homosexuality is “a sin” and society of the time would strip her of her status and possibly even execute her if she loved another woman, especially one of gypsy status like Esmeralda. Unlike claude frollo, you can feel some sympathy for this woman(who’s Name I am guessing is Claudia Frolllo) and you may even find some justification in her actions, if she was driven insane by the fact that she could not love who she cared for.
exactly , like just try to imagine what her life is like . She was obviously raised very religious her whole life , but as soon as she huts pubrty she starts having all these " fobiden " desires which only pushes her further in her religious delusion , she thn notices that unlike other people she does not habe any sexual desires (because she is homosexual and doesn't even recignize her desires as sexual attraction or has gotten used to repressing them ) which only makes her feel purer and closer to god , slowly she starts feeling pride and superiority amongst the sinners around her and then years later after she has reached her dreams and feels closer to god than ever she realizes everything has been futile all along
While I do agree homosexual aspect makes this scene deeper, I wouldn't go as far as to say I feel sympathy for her. No matter the gender, Frollo is still a bastard who is willing to kill a race of people and force a woman to love them just to prove to themselves to be pious. Never forget this song is a denial of a holy man(woman)'s darkside.
@@thehoebehindthedumpster9389 actually not having sexuall desires isnt being pure (God intended for people to be attracted to the opposite sex for a good reason). And He doesn't want people to feel superior to others.
So compared to the original, its still very creepy. Sure, Mistress Frollo and Esmeralda seem to be closer in age, unlike the original. But Mistress Frollo STILL TALKS ABOUT FORCING A YOUNG WOMAN THAT SHE SAW LIKE A COUPLE HOURS AGO AND THREW IN JAIL TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP OR FACE DEATH BY BEING BURNED. Edit: The Animation Looks Amazing, and that Guard Lady who folded in on herself? 👌
@@anonguy772 i don't get how the original is pure. and i don't really think everything that is gay is a 100 times better but in this case where instead of a lusty old man a woman questioning her sexuality is better.
I think this version with these pictures displays the whole situation different. The main character here has anger in her, but she’s also afraid and desperate... it sounds like she can’t really understand her feelings, but than it turns all into anger. I don’t know but I feel more pain in this version. Some phrases sound more in love, everything feeling changes so quickly
@@theeye8276 She looks like she is fighting with her 'sinful' feelings. That's why it looks more like love. As in Frollo's case he's forceful. And if you really loved someone you wouldn't act like that. He can't control his lust so he controls her freedom.
I can actually feel the realistic bitter tension and struggle. Cause it really is a realistic feeling of a woman of the rules of the church whirs struggling with her sexuality to feel this way.
This is the most criminally underrated video I've ever seen. The coloring, the shading, the anatomy, the expressions, all of it is flawless! You my friend have earned a new sub 👍
I was browsing through RU-vid today watching these annapanstu hellfire animatics and I saw this. After replaying this a million times, I can gladly say make that 3 lol So glad I subscribed, can’t wait to see more
This is a beautiful display of how amazing visuals and alluring vocals can make half the audience empathize with a monster... and 90% of them want to bang her(including me). Edit: ...for the past couple hours or so I've been going back to this song every dozen minutes to listen to this song... the rest of the time was spent listening to Anna's other covers... I didn't know you could fall in love with a voice.
I really like this. The art is beautiful first of all. But also the version of it with the lesbian instead of the old man is that it makes the story much more complex. It's not "you didn't reciprocate my love, so die" it's more about her internalized homophobia (and the animation implies the love was reciprocated) and her wanting to get rid of her own feelings.
This is genuinely one of my all time favourite animatics! I've watched it so many time and will probably want it a bunch more, it gets me so pumped up to draw and create. Plus I laugh every time the sketchy servant boy goes squish lmao.
I love the way her voice cracks/softens at certain points, I also like how about 1:08 her voice shakes a little as though she’s having an internal war between her religion and what was her whole life and the woman she loves. Also at 2:31 her eye looks like a monocle and her eyebrow looks like her eye and I can’t un-see it.
I just love how the other priestess goes splat when she says "gone", I find it hilarious along with lady Frollo's WTF face when that happens, in an otherwise epic animatic... your work is awesome, I may even take it as a guide for an animation of this song.
(Ok so Anna's comments were disabled so I chose this vid) Who remembers watching this as a kid and thinking he was just singing about hate, but then watching this when your older, and actually LISTENING to the lyrics and thinking: "Oh..... so... he was singing about THAT.. wierdo" Just thinking
Yeah, I remember the song really rubbing me the wrong way when I was little but not entirely understanding why. I was a very instinctual child, I think (still am) and this song just... **shudders**
Well one lesbianism is not a sin lust is. Two by not adressing the fact that frollo is a lesbian is good because it is not the sin but her pride and lust are.
GravityFallsdabest 1 It’s because it is considered a sin at the time, or would be in Frollo’s eyes, that she would be struggling it... You realize when ppl say this in the comments, they don’t mean homosexuality is actually a sin?
@@user-qv2qf1jk5o Yes in that time it was considered a sin but in the comments they at least most of the comments adressing it are thinking of it as a sin.
@@aeonaf.6923 eh i dunno I think they're looking at it from the perspective of someone in that time period, as the general beleif at the time would have been that homosexuality is a sin
@@anonamass9244 I really understand that train of thought but if you engage anyone with a comment referring to homosexuality they will believe it is a sin in modern times
Love how, from my point of view, the inner turmoil with her own feelings is more dominant than the religion. Its as if she is hiding behind religion to hide her own confusion.
I LOVE the imagery of the fire and how it was used here, in a more illusory/ghostly way than literal. And Ezmerelda's demonic transformation in response to Frollo's denial was such a powerful moment. This felt like such a fierce battle with the self. Bravo!
Ruby Sapphire Frollo is still a horrible person but I'd have a little more sympathy since Claudia would be struggling with not just lusting after someone (and a gypsy no less), but also homosexuality- both of which were considered sins and absolutely unacceptable in the eyes of the Church.
Natalie L you’re right- regardless of gender, Frollo is still a disgusting, evil person. I do believe the concept of him being a woman adds far more complexity to his character however and makes for a more interesting story.
so i guess traumatizing quasimodo and lusting over esmeralda as well as killing tons of people is okay as long as its gay? you guys notice something cuz i do
In my opinion, the Disney version of Hunchback of Notre Dame should not be a kids movie because it deals with stuff a child should not know about until they have matured, for example, Frollo lusting over Esmerelda for pretty much 3/4 of the whole movie. Like, the first time he confronts her in the church, HE SNIFFS HER HAIR! Kids should not be doing that to other people because in all honesty, it’s. Freaking. CREEPY.
So it's wrong to tackle a real life subject? Also they end up knowing it's creepy and wrong because he's the villain he is the one who dies in the end so why would they want to be like him? I really hate how soft people have become after all they're going to find out eventually so why sugar coat it
I agree with kaiju on this one. Not informing children can make them suspectible to grooming and its nice to see a children's movie tackling this and showing what to avoid.( Of course advice always helps, but an interesting movie will help a lot more imo )And if you consider the og frollo this character was based on, they already sugarcoated a lot of things anyway.
Okay I see your point I don't completely agree with your point about how kids want to sniff other people's hair. And I also don't sing it's even that graphite of a movie I think at the most it should have got it like a PG-13 rating at least.
@@ald2104 I agree with you and I wish someone who was understanding (that for me is sadly not my parents) and explained these things to me before I came a victim and blamed for it.
Hearing these powerful vocals with the animation was amazing, but the fact that it was a woman instead an old man stuck a chord with me. Her face, the struggle between sexuality and religion, the wavering vocals, it's all so on point with my own life that it brought me to tears. I love every part of this with all of my soul.
I love how it went from serious to silly then back to serious in the span of 10 seconds. Beautiful artstyle and stunning character designs make this amazing. Keep up the wonderful work~♡
This really hit home for me- as a bisexual girl living in a religious household, I was taught that loving the same sex is evil. So I really felt that I was being controlled by a dark evil. I know it sounds stupid but when you’re taught that your whole life it’s hard to get out of that mindset. I have now, I accept myself but it still lingers
I don’t think it’s a sin. God wouldn’t have made you this way If God didn’t want to :) . Frollos sin isn’t sexuality but her lust and mass murder. Lust is selfish and makes people do horrible things.
Except the girl version of the judge doesn't actually love the gypsy girl for her. She only wants her body. This mixed with the 'sin of homosexuality' (Please note the sarcasm here....) makes this more perilous for the judge but doesn't excuse the fact the she is only lusting for the gyspy's appearance.
I don’t think this amazing animatic has enough of the story to make a judgement on the character’s morality. It says oc animatic, as in original character, so we can’t count on her being the same as Frollo. If she did do the same things, she’d be evil, gender aside, but this animatic alone is not a deciding sentence.
SAME! Growing up in a VERY religious community, I genuinely thought something was wrong with me growing up cause I liked girls the way I should've liked boys, I LITERALLY thought I was abnormal cause no other girl felt this way towards other girls
