Miss Channing was so gracious to our group of Air force members stationed in England in the 70s, she came out to greet us after a performance, a busy lady but she took the time to say hello.
My late mother adored Carol Channing, and loved "Hello Dolly." My mom had some tough circumstances to overcome in her life. She was widowed very young and raised three children on her own. When she finally got us raised and began to reclaim her life, she adopted 'Hello Dolly" as her theme song. I can still hear mom singing this & adding a lot of dramatic flair. If there's a heaven, she's welcoming Carol today and they're surely singing a duet! RIP Carol. You were one in a million.
Oh what a beautiful memory that is ❤️ I’m so sorry for the loss of your mum, she sounds like a great character, I’m glad you have some lovely memories of your mum 🥰
I worked with her on the Grand National Tour of Hello Dolly in 1978. On every show I would chat with her briefly before pulling the cord on the little curtain at the top of the grand staircase that she would slowly descend to wild applause for her final rendition of "Hello Dolly". Great memories. Wonderful lady.
@@tonyspinnelli730 She was a total professional. I almost was fired when my assistant decided to drop a Quaalude and disappear into the bar between cues. He was supposed to have the "potato puffs" (tissues sprayed with iced tea and browned over light bulbs) ready for her dinner scene. We scrambled like crazy until we found them. She was adlibbing to kill the two minutes or so it took us to find them. The next day, as I met her behind the grand stairway I apologized and told her it would never happen again. "It better not. " she replied, cold as ice.
I saw her in Hello Dolly in Fort Myers FL several years ago, got to meet her after show. After an incredible performance Miss Channing took time to speak with everyone, what a truely charming woman who I will never forget. RIP Miss Channing and thank you for an evening that I will always remember in.my ❤.
Saw Carol Channing in a revival of Lorelei and she was magical! The most generous, ingratiating, charmimg entertainer ever -- with a heart as big as her smile! RIP Carol Channing -- your lights will never dim. Thank Heavens for youtube so future generations can get a taste of your magic!

I saw Carol do this role at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, OH in 1995, she was 64. Incredible stamina! I also saw her with Mary Martin in Legends at Playhouse Square. I think we may have briefly met her then, but everyone was very protective of Mary Martin, and I don't honestly remember if she came out after the show - I know Mary didn't. Carol, you were - and will always be - a star of the highest caliber. You will shine forever, and you will be forever missed. RIP.
The one and only Miss Carol Channing, a true entertainment LEGEND. This woman was blessed by God with so much talent and she blessed the world with those talents. RIP Miss Channing, you will always be remembered for your incredible performances and interviews.
Amazing evening in many ways! They polished the floor between the rehearsal and the performance. No room on that tiny stage! The cast of Chicago went on before us and went down like ninepins! Also on RU-vid! Still, we all managed to look gorgeous! Xxx
Growing up watching the Barbra Streisand film, I thought I understood Hello Dolly!, but I didn't actually understand Hello Dolly! until I saw it on Broadway for the first time with Donna Murphy. This is a show that seriously needs to be seen live with a top-notch production with brilliant acting, comedic timing, choreography, pacing, and direction. I think that was the magic of seeing Carol Channing live back in 1964 and in subsequent tours.
I agree! Just saw it with Betty Buckley tonight, and wow! Knocked my socks off. Whole cast was first rate. Oh, the gorgeous harmonies in this scene are wonderful live!
because of seeing the film first i never cared for Hello Dolly - i thought the film was a mess. everybody kept saying see it on stage, it's so much better. i still wish i could catch a good run of the show.
When I was young I first saw Carol Channing in a TV movie of Alice in Wonderland. I think it was called Through the Looking Glass. I remember thinking this lady is funny, I loved her unique voice and she really made me smile. Rest In Peace Carol... you will be missed
I finally got to see the movie Hello Dolly for the first time last night. Even though I enjoyed seeing Barbara Streisand in the part of Dolly, I was wishing that Carol Channing had gotten to play the part in the movie.
They might as well bury the part, too. Carol Channing WAS Dolly. No one else can do the part justice. Saw her on Broadway when I was 10-12 or so. Don't remember the year, but I remember the show.
@Jeremy Earle The point of the musical is that an aged former cabaret singer comes back after tribulation to find she's welcomed with open arms, therefore I think Carol Channing fits the role. Are you referring to the musical itself or this casting, or the couple mistakes? I just don't find it sad; I find it charming.
Just happened upon this post and it took me back to 1979 when living in the UK and went with my partner to see this production of "Hello Dolly!" with the incomparable Carol Channing at Drury Lane Theatre in London. A long time ago but I do remember it so very well....
Must've been glorious! Now Carol and Jerry Herman are both dead... I would say say it's the end of an era, but the kind of musical comedy they represented died long before them.
