Following the lacklustre reception to «Hellraiser Revelations» (2011), making another Hellraiser wasn’t a big priority for Dimension, not until the rights reversion deadline was looming over the horizon once more.
In this video, «Hellraiser Judgment» writer and director Gary J. Tunnicliffe shares how the movie came to be, the competing scripts, the development and why he cast himself as The Auditor, and the public drama surrounding the recasting of Doug Bradley as the iconic Pinhead, The Hell Priest.
This is Part III, Chapter 1 of the Talking Hellraiser series, where Midnight’s Edge is teaming up with Gary J. Tunnicliffe to give you the detailed behind the scenes history of the Hellraiser franchise, warts and all. No holds will be barred.
Part I deals with the making of the original sequels:

Thank you guys so much for doing such an extensive interview. I think it's very important (especially with how reactionary and personal fans get on the net) to shine a light on the more logistical realities of filmmaking within a studio. Judgment was a film I was probably going to ignore after several shitty Hellraiser movies but now I plan to check it out purely from how open Gary has been. Most importantly I can watch it with more insight and appreciation from his angle. I am keen for more interviews like this in the future I hope. Perhaps even Doug can join in.

god i wish he was able to make judgement the way he originally wanted. it sounds SO much more interesting than the cop story that came around.. i loved judgement but the cop stuff felt boring compared to the scenes where actual judgements take place. the gruesomeness was so.. interesting and really made it stand out to me.

Regardless of the he said/he said and he did/he did between Gary and Doug, it is intriguing to get a behind the scenes account of movie making from someone who is doing it, making movies and in the system. If Midnight’s Edge wants to continue digging it would make sense to see if Doug would be interested to come on for his side in general, good memories and the current situation, but ultimately it’s a bit sad that what seems like a friendship has soured between them. Ultimately RU-vid and social media is not the place to air dirty laundry, but ultimately have Doug and Gary back on the same page in some way would be cool, and if the OG Pinhead was ever back into a film (seems unlikely) many fans would lose their sh$t!!!

Can't say I blame Doug for his reaction. Dimension is basically using Gary Tunnicliffe to retain the rights. They didn't care about his script, they cared about the franchise rights. So yea, why would you help those assholes milk the franchise further. And from what I've seen from Judgement, it is definitely better than revelations, but just not that great.

I'd never even heard of this new Hellraiser film until these videos. Like most, I didn't really care any more after the last few sequels (especially the last one). Having a look behind the curtain as to what goes on and why is really interesting, and made me want to watch this new one, so I did. There are some things I didn't like about it, but what the studio was most afraid of was what made the film interesting. Really liked the addition of the inquisition characters. With about 5 times the budget, this could have really went places. So thanks for this series of videos. I'm really enjoying them and they got me to watch (and appreciate) a film I would not have bothered with otherwise.

To be fair if I was Doug and I got that call I would have responded the same way. I mean can anyone blame him? The movies had become straight to digital crap, that in stark contrast to the high prestige the franchise used to be. After being offered so little for Revelations and how badly that had turned out (and how every movie since perhaps Bloodlines was received) its understandable that he realized Dimension would never push the film to be a good movie, he saw it as just a quick cheap movie so they could keep the rights. I mean sure Gary was writing and directing it but that doesn't mean its gonna be a good movie, especially when its handicapped by the studio as a filler movie. To me i see it as a dilemma, sure an actor likes to act and they like the money but they also don't wanna be involved in a flop or cheap drivel. Doug isn't a very prolific actor, he has been type-cast as Pinhead, so I can see how as the movies have gone on and him seeing the series decline that at a point he doesn't want to contribute to something he believes is tarnishing the series he is best known for. He doesn't wanna be known as "oh that guy played pinhead in that series that had a couple of good movies but then the rest were crap". As far as the NDA goes I think that was just that he assumed (perhaps wrongly) that the lengthy NDA was so long and filled with legalese because of his habit of talking publicly with what he likes and hates about the direction of the series. He was at the standpoint of "Well I am not confident of this series at this point cause Dimension doesn't give one damn about it, sure Gary is doing it and its his script but it was also his script that became Revelations, now they want me to sign a huge legalese filled NDA before I can even read the script... it's gotta be crap and they don't want me going out later and saying how bad it is."

I think Judgement was a really good movie which tryed to for me at least do something fresh and bizzare as the original was intended to be, by that its way better then most of the last batch... But to be honest no matter on who is the blame here, i think the worst thing is when two friends had to make decesion around something they love and dont agree, ruining that friendship in the process, i quite get why Bradley did what he did and also i get Tunnicliffe for doing what he needed to do, but honestly this could not last forever anyway and if the franchise will still continue it has to be withou Bradley in some point, for that matter, this was more then good performance from somebody else and thats for sure and new cenobites was a great addition to the film as well, what i liked always about Clive Barker was that he was outright bizzare, this is like Barker more then last movies, even so the first script would be way better from what we heard here, still its full of good ideas...

I really liked Judgement quite a bit. It was refreshing to get a new spin on the mythology and it had a great grimy feel to it. This may be hard to hear but it was so good to see this version of Pinhead. Paul Taylor did this role just right and I would love to see more from him. Doug's Pinhead is classic and cannot be replaced but we've seen that version 8 times and with the series in dire need of life, it needs to move away from ties to the original series. While the script could have been a bit more 'fleshed out' (sorry), I enjoyed this and will gladly rewatch again.

I felt the same way, but as others have pointed out; the Heaven/Hell aspects of the mythos was injected directly by Clive Barker in later novels.
@UncleJoeNeonCherry
@UncleJoeNeonCherry 6 лет назад
I agree, Judgement is probably the best movie in the franchise since it went direct to video because it captures the atmosphere of the world. Even the better movies like Inferno didn't get it quite right. And the angel character is pretty tame compared to Barker pitting Pinhead against Lucifer in The Scarlet Gospels. Paul Taylor was surprisingly good, I'd like to see a sequel where he plays a humanized Pinhead trying to get back.

Gotta say, it was very nice to hear Tunnicliffe's side of the story that's been going on, and I actually appreciate and applaud him for the risks he was willing to take to make a _Hellraiser_ film, especially him having stuck to his guns in making _Judgment,_ and the _Into Darkness_ plot sounds intriguing too, I would also like to see that one made too, two birds one stone. I am happy to hear of a loving fan having the chance to make a movie to a franchise he loves, unlike most other filmmakers who simply don't care about the franchise they're making, only the money. The Dimension execs are such idiots, always trying to find the cheapest route to make a film. And as much as I am a loving _Scream_ fan (specifically the Sidney Prescott character), I am deeply sorry, Gary, for whatever trouble _Scream_ may have caused to _Hellraiser._ I'm sorry. ;(
@DemonBoy3223
@DemonBoy3223 6 лет назад
And also, it's very sad that Doug Bradley had decided to be shitty towards you, it sounds like he has become disillusioned with the behind-the-scenes stuff with _Revelations._ But it's fine, he wants to be that way then so be it.
@MichaelAarons1701
@MichaelAarons1701 6 лет назад
Found Judgement to be terrible. The plot logic was inconsistent, the Inquisition seems incompatible with the Gash group yet Pinhead is also their boss, the cops overreact to a fellow cop who walks in with a visible badge on her belt, the idea Pinhead could be banished from Hell and his masochism contradicts 2 & 3 establishing Elliot Spencer and “Pinhead” as two separate entities with one the host and the other the embodiment, and the shameful callbacks to the original were cringey. For a film deliberately a Hellraiser film, it had less than most of the other sequels to do with it. 13 Ghosts could have more easily felt a Hellraiser film given the minor beats this had to hit to qualify. Was the franchise supposed to be about facing your sins or about carnal temptations and the blur of arousing experiences?

Taylor a brilliant substitute of playing the role of Pinhead but despite what Doug Bradley has said or done I still think he should come back for the new sequels and now I have seen the Auditor I have to say I want to see more of him too. I am so for another new Hellraiser, perhaps even make a movie that stars Pinhead but to actually tell the story of captain Elliot Spencer from birth to childhood and growing up to being the captain of an army which then leads him to becoming Pinhead, i know the story has been kinda told in the first 2 movies. The next movie should be called Hellraiser: The Rise Of Pinhead or Hellraiser: Origins Doug Bradley is Pinhead and so no other actor should really play the role of Elliot Spencer/Pinhead than Doug Bradley

Well having watched the movie, Doug Bradley was right, listening to this piss poor director defend Dimension against Bradley is sickening, Dimension was an offshoot of the Miramax and run by Harvey Weinstien's bother Bob, often characterized as the Machiavellian, nasty Weinstien when compared to Harvey, who could have bad word to say about a company run like somebody like that? Peter Biskind's book Down and Dirty pictures about 90's Cinema and Miramax tells you everything you need to know about Dimension. It seems pretty clear that the only reason Bob's not on the chopping block that Harvey is right now is that he seemed more interested in fucking over creative people then actually fucking them.

I gotta say Gary has a clear passion for this and I do admire that. However he seems to not be able to separate the personal feelings about Doug Bradley and his own script. Everything set in the house felt like a total arthouse production of a hellraiser film, which I'm sure Clive Barker would've loved to do. I would love to see a hellraiser movie where it's all about the cenobites and from their perspective without spelling out exposition or revealing too much about the order of the gash, or anything in hell, since the mystery, other than the disturbing gore, is the factor that keeps the fanatic following glued to the franchise like Gary J. Tuncliffe was and probably still is after the kerfuffle of the horrible sequels( which is a majority of the series).

The first video I've ever watched on RU-vid where someone defended Alex Kurtzman.

Into darkness (while it sounds like a off brand hellraiser 2) conceptually sounds better than what judgement turned out to be. Judgment isn’t the worst, but it’s not that great either.

Hearing the drama about the original actor for Hellraiser reminds me of those dudes from the 70's who only live for the video game records they set on Donkey Kong when they were kids. Move on man. Either you want to be a part of the show or not.

Pinhead needs to be used like the shark in Jaws.

I don't really agree with the consistent angle of "we shouldn't keep rehashing the same thing". Not a single Hellraiser movie has really been the same as the first and second, not even close. I feel that's kind of the problem. No one, not even Gary, seem capable of capturing the same mood.

I feel bad for Gary in regards to how Doug allegedly treated him after all the years of work they've done together... Judgement is the best movie since Bloodline.

wow, this concept is much better than Judgement was ... even though Judgement is decent. I think it would have been awesome if it stayed like this.

Can you really blame Doug for feeling that way about Dimension films? I can understand not really being overly excited about doing anything with them regardless of who is doing the film.

Its to bad. They did not use Doug Bradley. Because they use him since the beginning of the films

I wish Judgement had of been amazing after this. Sadly, it’s ok at best, and really get the sense that there is no where to go after it, so a 100% remake is (for once) the best course of action

I would have gladly welcomed Gary as the new Pinhead. He was leagues better than the shitty Revelations one, and did a damn good job in No More Souls.

I so want the hellraiser in to darkness as the next movie where the human version of pinhead is one of the patients in the hospital that has to open one of the boxes that transforms him back into a stronger piss off pinhead that brings war by turning angels the pope and priest into cenabites to go to war agents god for taking him out of hell .

He seems really cool into darkness seems like a better idea but the cop thing has been done too much in hellraiser they should do scarlet gospels as a big budget barker film I did like the new pinhead and the auditor it's a good movie better than last three or four hellraiser films

What makes me laugh is Doug bitched about Dimension and yet kept taking their money for sub par movies.. i.e everything after Bloodline .....

Here's a radical idea... Just bear with me here... Instead of mashing out a piece of shit to retain the rights. Let them go, let someone who won't wank the franchise away have a go at it instead of raping all the potential away with piece of shit scripts that weren't even written for the franchise in the first place!
