After more than a year and a half in the can, Red Sonja starring Matilda Lutz from director MJ Basset still has no distribution, and there are now indications that there may be trouble behind the scenes … which maybe shouldn’t come as a surprise, as this movie shares producers with Hellboy The Crooked Man and the 2011 Conan the Barbarian reboot. Going on the math that a movie has to make double its budget to be considered profitable, 2011’s Conan lost $116 million dollars and 2019’s Hellboy lost $44.9 million dollars. I am beginning to enjoy watching these companies flush their finite resources down the toilet. Hopefully it will put them out of business sooner rather than later. Anyone remember Cannon Films?

There was a hope when they announced that MJ Bassett is the director, but but as soon as it was announced who she had chosen to play Sonja, and then that she will change Sonja's comic book origin - all hopes sank to the bottom of the ocean.

The original Charlie's Angles (1976 - 1981) was the last sexy girl boss franchise. The only other male regular Bosley (David Doyle) was given a good role because being the Bosley of a girl power group was every boys fantasy at the time. Series producer John Forsythe knew his target audience and played to his strengths in knowing that market.

That is what they are doing all the time. They could have created a new IP, but they want to use an audience for "star wars", and thus an acolyte needed to get that sticker. But because of that sticker they did not get a new audience (you know those people that react on twitter but don't go to cinemas) AND they lost the audience they were banking on (by destroying any bit of lore that was still standing after several years of that IP under animal / rat control).

It would be like if The Joker was titled _Joker: A Batman Saga_ leaving audiences confused when Batman was nowhere to be seen in the movie aside from maybe a brief cameo or something. Same happened here with _Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga_ where audiences expected to see a Mad Max movie with Max in it.

Matilda does not fit the Red Sonja physical type at all. Why was she chosen? An actress chosen to play the role needs to be tough and strong, but still sexy looking. Matilda is sexy, but that's it. She would never be a warrior maiden in the old days. As for the "Hellboy-The Crooked Man" looks awful and nothing like the comic story.

It's yet another DOA movie. 10 years ago, it would have taken a lot to make me lose interest in something like this, but I am so tired of it now. "Actress complains about male-gaze?" Yes, you might be guessing a lot. But your arguments and the last few years seem to point into the direction you hinted at. Big companies tend to be like big transport ships, they tend to take long stretches for breaking speed or even changing directions. I have another fear: lots of creative people might have been replaced with the help of DEI casting. That might make it impossible for the current teams to make anything that could be worth watching. Indicating a long dry run until teams AND companies are able to produce entertainment again.

I know the character of Red Sonja, and she's never really held any interest for me. From what you have to say, I have zero interest in this movie, even if it was pretty good. I never expected there would be a decent Red Sonja movie. It wouldn't bother me to the level of the God awful latter treatment of Conan, because Red Sonja is not an actual REH character, but still she was a decent comic character set in the Hyborian age. But most studios have no artistic vision and the people they hire generally only understand writing at the level of fan fiction and identity politics. I'd love someone with talent to make a Red Sonya movie, or better yet adapt REH's character Dark Agnes, set in medieval France. That would be great but it will never happen.

i have a background in martail arts and my bigest gripe is the so called female fighters look like they would lose to a paper bag in real life. they are not credable at all so they move everything around to acomadate that. eg at the start of rings of power they were fighting a dragon that was wiping out the best of them a small army of buffed dudes. then the female hero turns up all on her own and the dragon goes down just like that. haveing a face like you are sucking a lemon is no substitute for real grit.

Speaking of which I hear Hasbro commissioned paid for and made an entire 50+ episode Cartoon series for the Micronauts Brand and then NEVER RELEASED IT according to the show runner. Which kinda makes sense as I heard they were developing a toy line that then "disappeared" so yeah a 'bit odd'.

I wonder what Hollywood will look like and what lessons they will learn if EVERY movie they make done this way flops. People need to vote with their wallets. Honestly, what the shutdown taught me is I don't miss going to the theaters so I definitely will not see that I know is crap. Most of it is crap so I can easily pass or just wait.

More remakes. Name a remake as good as the original? BSG maybe? People need to let these remakes/reboots die. Hollywood cant even stand on their own anymore. They have to rob the graves of movies past but even thats not good enough, then the shit all over them by making them fit for modern audiences. Imagine them doing Big Trouble in Little China today. I need to stop, I better not give them any ideas.

@@DRTISAGITA I’m a big fan of Robert Howard, not so much DC comics. So I can’t really speak on the topic of WW, other than to say that gal gadot is very pretty, but not very physically imposing. As far as red Sonja goes, Howard and his imitators were a lot of things, but being realistic about what a female warrior would look like was not necessarily their strong suit. I’m not saying she has to look like a weightlifter, but a woman who was accustomed to swinging around a sword and wearing armor would have some muscle. She would not have the build of a 1950s pinup or a 2000s underwear model. And while red Sonja as she exists in comics and film is not a Howard original, the Howard characters she was based on didn’t wear chainmail bikinis in battle.

I would like to remind folks of Xena: Warrior Princess. Gabrielle went from being a conservatively dressed farm girl, to a nearly bikini clad warrior. Everyone really liked her transformation. She became more competent, confident, and effective while becoming sexier. Red Sonja is a hot, sexy, competent, intelligent warrior. I think fondly of Brigitte Nielsen. Be faithful to characters and lore, or FAIL.

Sure, but Xena simply gets a pass by that progressive crowd because the showrunner thought it was a good idea to queerbait that part of the fanbase in later seasons. It was one of the complaints leveled at it near the end of its run.
