Helmut Lotti - "Dorogoj Dlinnoju".
It may come as a surprise to many that this is an original Russian song. Because who didn't rock along on "Those Were The Days"? Even Paul McCartney knows the song like this. Gene Raskin translated it in 1963 and scored a first little hit. But in 1968 the Beatle-in-charge passes this same English version on to singer Mary Hopkin who makes it into a huge success.

Yes this is a Russian Jewish song composed by Boris Fomin about 1920. Eugene Raskin a Columbia professor and part time folks singer, said that as a small boy his mother would sing him this song, and years later he, as you note, gave it English lyrics and it became a hit for Mary Hopkin.

Sharing & enjoying traditional songs & culture and thus relating to our comman humanity is what President Kennedy had in mind when he said of the people of the (former) Soviet Union in 1963 "For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."

By the Long Road You rode on a troika with sleigh bells, And in the distance lights flickered.. If only I could follow you now I would dispel the grief in my soul! By the long road, in the moon light, And with this song that flies off, ringing, And with this ancient, this ancient seven-string, That has so tormented me by night.

@mauquiroz We rode on a troika with bells, A lights flashing in the distance ... Ah, how i would like to follow you, To deprive my soul from the boredom Chorus By the long road,by the moon night With the song, which flies away ringing With that ancient and seven-stringed which at nights so tormented me But it turns out we were singing for nothing, Needlessly burning night after night. If we did away with everything old, So these nights also moved away Chorus

No, entirely different. The title in Russian is "The Long Road" and it's about a soldier who is far away from his lover, nd says he knows that if she were with him, the nights wouldn't be so cold.

There are so many Slavic-language songs "ripped" from the other side of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War - this is one; another is "Lutshje Bulo" turned into "Yes, my Darling Daughter" with English lyrics written by Jack Lawrence and performed by many Western artists including the Andrew's Sisters, Glenn Miller and Sandie Shaw; and of course there is Acker Bilk's "Midnight in Moscow" which is actually the Russian folk song "Podmoskovnye Vechera" (evenings around Moscow).

to Uusikaarlepyy The melody is Russian, but the song was not translated, an American Gene Raskin wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" this is not a translation from the Russian song "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" which means "By a long road" or "along a long road" The song in Russian Дорогой длинною, was written by Boris Fomin in the early 1900's with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. Mary Hopkin had the biggest and best known hit with this song. maryhopkindotnet

English Lyrics translated from Russian ; They rode in a troika with bells, And lights flickered in the distance. Eh, how would I now follow you, Soul to dispel from longing. Dear long, but moonlit night, Yes, with that song that flies into the distance, ringing, Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night. Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night. Yes, it turns out, we sang for nothing, We burned in vain night after night. If you are done with the old, these nights are gone. Dear long, but moonlit night, Yes, with that song that flies into the distance, ringing, Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night. (2) From now on, we are destined to go to our homeland in new ways. We rode in a troika with bells, And now we arrived a long time ago. Dear long, but moonlit night, Yes, with that song that flies into the distance, ringing, Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night. Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night. Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night.

He isn't singing the song "those were the days" he is singing a song called "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" An American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and who recorded it first) wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" and used the melody only from the song "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" Дорогой длинною ("By a long road" or "along a long road") which was written by the Russian song writer Boris Fomin with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii Pat maryhopkinDOTnet

there were some sleepless days/nights with love(r) or with revo-violence days/nights fighting with commrades ..they ran away towards to their born-hometown on a troika along a long road..the original russian lyric is this. newer lyric by an american and music arranged by Paul to Mary is the more sweet and making inpact for all the poeples mind, isnt it? i like happy songs..though i really want Mary to sing with her passionate sweet voice in a vodka bar with russian tast backmusic....
