Help! "Crosley" tonearm skids or skips across the record!

5 reasons why this might be - plus a very quick look at a more advanced record player which has some improvements over the basic "Crosley" mechanism
Reason #6 - record player has not been levelled properly. the force of gravity could make the stylus jump out of the groove

My Crosley C6 worked perfect until replacing the other cartridge. It started to skip when close to the inner track. I have solved the issue already. The 4 wires inside the tone arm became little short after my cart replacement (probably I pulled them). Anyways, I opened the back cover, and pulled back the 4 wires slightly. Now, everything worked. The design was bad. They manufacture should use softer and little longer wires. Hope my experience does any help.

I have crossley and I bought new records and they skip! I try to put 10 cent coin on the stylus as a load, the skip just disappeared -.-

Yes, more weight will help, but will cause more wear on the records. If you are buying a lot of new vinyl then it would be worth buying a better record player, as better ones track with less force and won't wear the record so fast. 😀👍

I tried to clean like deep and wet 2x still doesnt get rid of the skips. I heard about getting rid of the skips using toothpick , tried abit but Im not sure confident with the new records. So I just put a slight extra weight on top of the stylus. Just an acceptable weight should be fine, even the tonearm actually got weight itself.

Yes, I wouldn't try a toothpick. The fault is probably more with the record player than the record. These machines are very cheaply built and don't have the tracking force and antiskate adjustment more expensive machines have. If you were able to adjust these settings you would probably find the record didn't skip. Do you know have much extra weight the 10c coin adds? Thanks 👍😀

The thing is why some of the records didnt show some skips while few of the new records that I bought, were skipped but it is not entirely LP, somehow it is just 1-2 songs? Is this also could be the small platter that somehow showed a minor default in terms of achieveing a consistent revolutions/rotations? So mystery for me.

Yes, its very difficult to predict or explain which records will skip. On simple machines like this there nothing you can really adjust (other than what is mentioned in the video) to fix the problem and adding weight can help

The biggest reason that the 'Crosley' type of turntables (they're actually made by Chinese manufacturer "Skywin") skip is down to lack of 'mass' in the arm and headshell parts. The arm is a very light aluminium tube, with a very light plastic headshell. The Chuo Denshi CZ800 cartridge used (or more often a cheaper clone of the CZ800), only weighs aprox 2 grams. The weight of the arm and cartridge combined is what gives the average tracking force of 5 - 5.5 grams. That sound a heavy figure for tracking, however, as the whole assembly together is so lightweight, the energy generated when the stylus hits a loud or dynamic part of the music, it's enough to throw the stylus out of the groove! Your BSR will be able to track more accurately, even with a ceramic cartridge, is because the arm and headshell mass are far, far higher, and using a counterweight/spring method to balance the arm/cartridge, and to set the tracking force, means that although the cartridge may be only tracking at 4 - 5 grams, the more substantial arm/headshell are not thrown so easily out of the groove by the stylus! A 1 or 2 gram weight can be added to the headshell of the Crosley/Skywin to add 'mass', but a proportionately heavier weight must also be added to the back end of the arm behind the pivot point, to counterbalance the added weight at the headshell whillst maintaining that 5 gram tracking force! This would fix some of the tracking errors, but possibly not all.... These turntables are usually OK with records from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and most 80s, however, it's the new 180 gram re-issues that cause most of the skipping problems, as these are often mastered and cut 'hotter' than the older records ever were.

Thanks - yes - I wasn't really thinking of mass vs weight - but you are right - the mass of the 'Crosley' type (and I refer to them as that as it is what I believe people search for 😉) is much less. I also wasn't aware that modern pressing were hotter in that respect. I have very little in the way of new vinyl. Most of what we have in the house is 50/60s. One of my 'Crosley' style ones dispenses even with the aluminium tube and I think the headshell and the tonearm are all moulded as one piece of plastic!. Thanks 😀👍

Question, I have an specific record that skip in the crossley but if I add a Penny plays fine. This is realted to the mass and weight? I want to improve ASAP at least to a LP-120 but need to wait. Need to save for it.
@mrrgstuff
@mrrgstuff 2 года назад
Yes, the headshell doesn't have enough mass. Adding weight does also increase the tracking force which is not good, but you can add a counter balance weight at the back of the tonearm

@@mrrgstuff oh thats new to me. Do you know how?
@mrrgstuff
@mrrgstuff 2 года назад
@@rafaelmmartinez9170 There isn't a built in method for adding a counterweight - but it would be possible to attached a short arm and a weight to the other end of the tonearm. It wouldn't look that good though and may case issues with closing the case if it is a suitcase type. Unfortunately these little machines have very simple mechanisms with no real means of adjustment

I ripped off the red part on the tip of the tone arm thinking it wasn’t meant to be there. Is there a way to replace it?
@mrrgstuff
@mrrgstuff 3 месяца назад
The red bit should just clip back on. This is stylus or needle and you can also buy new ones. The bit it clips onto is the cartridge and you could just buy a new one of those complete with the stylus. Embassy, Woolworths own brand of records, used to cost 4 bob in the 50s/60s.

Personally I would get rid of the Crosley because it’s junk. You would be better off with an audio-technica, or Stanton or even numark. Or if you just want 33 and 45 SONY is a good choice as well.

Thanks 😀 👍. Yes the Crosely types are not to be recommended and I only really do the videos to help people who have ended up with one. I don't actually play much vinyl, mainly 78s and mainly on the gramophone. The BSR could do with a better cartridge (it has the Banpa) and a new mat, but I hope to make more use of it. Maybe I will get a more up market one but I don't really have room at the moment 🤔 😀

@@mrrgstuff you can put a magnetic cartridge on that BSR. I have that same bsr. It has a Shure M75 magnetic cartridge. That has the much better arm with proper counterweight. It's still meant to be adjusted through the dial spring tensioner after the weight is balanced at zero. I'm not sure if leaving the spring loaded dial at zero and setting the tracking weight with scales would be an improvement.
