You need to know your costs of operations. How much per mile depends on expenses. Figure out your fixed costs ( truck or lease payment, insurance, ELD ect. All the things that cost the same every month) Then fuel will be your biggest varible cost but you should also get numbers on lumpers, tolls and maintenance.. Understand your fuel costs by knowing your miles per gallon the truck gets. And dont just go off of what the dashboard computer says. Track your miles vs how many gallons you are purchasing with each fill up and do the math, it will be your most accuarate method of knowing your MPG. Once you know those numbers youll be able to figure out if a load rate is worth taking. And more importantly youll know if the truck is profitable for you two. I want to add that you should start to pay attention to what each lane you run is paying. Once you know there are better rates in certain areas you can either take a lower rate to get to an area paying more and average up once you are there or youll know how much it will cost to run empty to get to better rates rather than move freight at a loss. Also, always fight for more money. The dispatcher gets paid regardless of how you do on the load. So extra stops dont matter to him but to you it could mean the load isnt worth taking. All the extra miles cost you money not the dispatcher so dont be afraid to tell him youll pass on the load. More miles means more costs so start putting together your costs to operate so you know what rate makes you money. If you are running a team load the rate should compensate both drivers equally. So for instance, if you take a 1200 mile run and it has 3 days to deliver one driver can get it there on time, but if they tell you its a team load and needsto be there in 20 hrs the load should pay much more since they are booking a team to get it there faster and you are providing that exceptional service. This is your business and you have a lot more risk then your dispatcher, make sure you are compnesated for it. Good luck to both of you!

If they say they added a stop but didn’t add money you don’t take the load. If they tell you to bounce stops you say no cuz you’re adding miles n bs. Get your own truck n sign on to a company where you can choose your own loads n negotiate money. Dispatchers don’t care about you at all neither do brokers.

I agree 3.50 to 4.50 a loaded mile to the truck plus fuel surcharge and I'm loaded miles should start at the first stop so yes that broker is not working in your best interest.....I would fire him

Someone got paid for the extra stop, believe me. You should have rejected the load to see the extra stop pay. Here is some advice the good paying loads are for the ones that don't do the math. It's a nickel and dine game that most won't see. Everyone's mileage pay is different you need to figure out your operating cost per miles for your truck and your business. Set a competitive rate you can profit from.

Even flatbed drivers are struggling to get over2.50 mile. If you’re running spot market freight it’s tough out there. I run the mid-west myself. Seems to be the most consistent freight.
@MrFlappyDavid

Hi Kayla, you need to figure your cost of running the truck. Add up all your truck related costs for the week, add .60 per mile for fuel, the .15 cents per mile for the maintenance which probably comes out to 1.30 per mile in total expenses. Then subtract 1.30 from what the load pays per mile. So at 2.00 per mile load you're making.70 per mile in profit or wages. Or you could estimate $2800 per week in fuel plus $1500 in truck expenses weekly means you need to get paid $4300 per week to cover expenses plus $3600 for wages. Which means the truck needs to get paid $7900 per week for you and your wife to get paid $3600 split or $1800 each. Thanks for sharing your journey. I wish you the best. Try upper Midwest for reefer loads.

@chiefkeyes5359

It boils down to your expenses so calculate truck payment, truck/health insurance, fuel, maintenance, food, taxes whatever the total is for a given month, if your take home pay covers that and then some you're doing pretty well, keep in mind there are times that you're going to have to take a loss just to keep things moving but don't go too far into the red, the goal is to keep things in the black as often as possible. I'm kind of concerned when you said dispatcher it should be a broker and if you are unable to replace that individual in addition to look for better loads yourself that is an indication you could be a glorified company driver. But every walk away lease has their own restrictions and expectations a lot of them require you to stay within their ecosystem of loads which makes you a company driver essentially. I've always told folks in order for you to be an independent contractor you must set the terms of the contract not the person asking for your services otherwise you're just a glorified company driver. A good portion of these trucking lease programs are just another cover to pass off corporate taxes and other administrative expenses onto small business owners.
@NoWorrezTrucking
@NoWorrezTrucking 10 месяцев назад
There is so many things wrong here. 1st, walk away lease only benefits the company, you are a company driver taking on all the risk. The only way to know if you are getting all your money is get a copy of the Rate-con, not from your dispatch but require that they cc you on the email, (if they are getting load from broker). Multi stops are a waste of time, you don't agree to x number of stops then let them oh by the way add an additional stop without extra pay. How is your dispatcher paid? How invested are they? A good dispatcher can make you or break you, ask for a different one if they are not doing the job. Know your costs, not only CPM but what does it cost you a day to run? There are so many factors I don't know, ie what is the split, what does the company cover for the % they get? Nobody runs 52 weeks so here is some advice: Add up all your expenses for each category on a monthly basis: ROI (how much do you want your company to make)? FUEL the biggest one. Salary, payroll taxes, (depending how your company is set up) retirement, truck payment, insurance, parking, HUT, IRP, IFTA, maintenance/repair fund, scales, tolls, prepass, truck washes, state mileage tax (OR,NM,KY,) ELD, Accountant, cell phone, and anything else I missed, also, have a category for misc expenses...get the picture? Now divide said expenses by how many weeks you think you will run? Then divide that by 5 days and 7 days. If you can make what you need to in 5-days then 6 and 7 are extra profit. Then divide by how many miles you think you will run annually/weekly/daily? Now it's fairly easy to see where you need to be $$ wise per day or per mile. There are times when the west coast pays, but you need to know when that is. Midwest is usually pretty good. Florida only if you have a great rate going in so you can take a shit rate coming out looking at the trip as a whole to make sure it is where you want to be. My wife and I run team, there is not a lot of team freight right now so we quit running our own van and run power only under are own authority, averaging between 5k to 6.5k per week mostly drop and hook. We can run less if we want to but our thought is if we are going to be out here, we should be making money. There are so many more variables this could become a book. Reach out if you have any questions and I would be glad to offer more insight. Good luck!

Best of luck and stay safe.

Rate per mile is not always a useful metric. Develop your daily rate target (probably 1200-1800 for a team truck subject to many factors) plus some money for fuel. 4.5 days @ $1500/day + $1200 fuel would be $7950. Nothing scientific but a quick way to compare profitability.

@danielhahn5455 Год назад
You two are the business owners. Your dispatcher doesn't care if you succeed or not. They are there to move freight. You need to know what your dollar amount needed for you to be successful. Then you go from there. Rates are really low right now. The load you just described should have grossed between 10,000 to 11,000 dollars with all the pick ups and extra drop and total miles driven. If you don't stand up for yourselves, no one else will. You are now a business owner not a truck driver. Good luck, keep positive, and keep doing what you are doing now, Ask for input for others. Thank you for your videos and time spent making them!
@Chrismusseau
@Chrismusseau Год назад
If you’re running percentage, you need to have a program where you can run your miles divided by the rate and see if it’s worth your wild but before you do this, you need to know how much it causes you guys to operate your truck every mile, for example, if it causes $.80 a mile to pay for insurance for your truck trailer rentals And the rate is dollar 1.50 a mile but it’s gonna take you guys a couple extra days to do all the pics and drops you’re losing money. Running percentage if it’s not worth your while you need to be able to refuse loads or you’ll go broke the company don’t care because they’ll get the truck back if you go broke and then charge you what they want to bring the truck back up to standard test downfall but walk away. You’ll from Canada and we called them never never deal you’re neverthe own truck and you’re always paying for something.

You have to figure all of your fixed costs, truck pmt, insurance, plates, hvut, maintenance, what you pay yourself, ect. Then figure in your fuel cost. Calculate all of these numbers on a per mile basis. Fuel costs are very different in different parts of the country! What might look like a great load out west really might not be because of your fuel costs. I have my own authority and I run my trucks. If I have learned anything it is know your money, every dime! Fuel is your biggest expense and can make or break you. You might have to look at loads on a round trip basis, better money one way then the other. Figure the whole trip on a per mile basis. A good paying load for you might not be so good for someone else because of their fixed costs, example they have a high truck payment so that adds to their per mile cost. Make an excel spread sheet and track everything, it really helps you see where you are making or losing money without guessing. I still drive so I understand it isn’t always easy to do the book keeping on the road but I promise it is worth it. I hope this helps, this is what I have learned after 15 years out here. 😊

If they added an extra stop, then there should always be extra money. For me, at the end of the don't take to much multiple stop loads because it's always a race to get to each stop and everyone is for themselves regarding time. Brokers don't care about the trucker, only their pocket. Fuel will destroy you now a days so averaging $2.65/mile plus is reasonable, but $3.50 plus (of you can ever obtain that is great. Multi stop loads never pan out. Never be desperate for loads that barely pay. Idk your situation. However, I'm planning on pulling my truck from these clowns I'm leased on, too, because their insurance is too much. Always look for an average of $2.65 cpm plus.

The broker get the load directly from company they generally take a 15 to 35 percent cut. Your dispatcher gets paid also whether they take a direct cut or included in your administrative fees that you pay your leasing company. With that said, you need to calculate how much it cost to run your truck. Fuel is your biggest expense so figure out how much fuel you burn per mile, then factor in your time ( how much you want to make for yourselves per load after fuel expense) Then factor in savings for truck expenses or repairs. All the best!

But the short answer to your question, if a company driver makes 50 60 70cpm, as a lease operator with expenses, you should at least make 2.50 on long miles and 3.00-3.50 on short. The market is rough right now so you might have to give and take a little but it will be hard to survive as a lease operator if the money isn’t right. I wish you guys the best!

It's in your company's best interest to not give you that truck at the end in the meantime y'all are paying all the expenses. Find a good small company to work for. I find owners who have extra trucks to put you in. Try to find an owner who still drives. They will usually pay more for good experienced drivers, especially teams. Save your money up, let the owner pay all the bills and deal with the problems. Just be safe, dependable and as helpful as can be when problems happen. Ps, real truck drivers don't wear flip flops!

Yeah there's a couple that a few years ago did an apple load out of WA for jb hunt that had three stops going to Costco DC in south Jersey. Not until they got to the first pick up did the broker notify them that there was another pick up that they needed to do which added 150 more miles. And of course jb hunt refused to pay any extra. And the reefer had to be run on continuous. They said after all expenses they cleared about $300 for six days. So good luck with this one.

Your dispatcher got extra money for the 5th stop for sure, I guess if you are tan try running flatbed for someone, more money and more respect in flatbed then reefer for sure. Good luck!

No less than 3.00 a mile. I suggest look for your own loads, that dispatcher is screwing you six ways from Sunday.

It is important to know where ❓ fuel costs are lower along the route, & purchase accordingly. Using super trucker Dan channel as an example, he will purchase 75-100 gallons in an expensive fuel state, & fill -up in states where prices are lower. These fuel costs can severely effect the $ bottom line.$. His carrier also obtains fuel discounts @ truck stops across the nation. Are you receiving a discount from the pump price❓You might need to have a conversation w/ your carrier hierarchy, ❓🚛 It can be "concerning" for a female driver to fuel @ night, so fuel purchases should be conducted during daylight hours, for safety .👌

Well are you owner operator or you a company driver? Well that looks awful complicated with the way this is laid out. Then with that being California heavy traffic it isn't good if it involves heavy traffic and multiple stops. Something else to consider is how much does it weigh? There are many things to consider dollars per mile is a very important part of the process. Also good paying loads are not easy to find. Then the high cost of fuel is definitely a factor and then are you a company driver or you owner operator. Generally for myself as owner operator I no longer go to California Washington or Oregon or new York. There is too much drama in those places.

This is the problem that we are having. We realized that we are ALWAYS heavy. Literally. Then having to go through traffic, like you said, plus the mountains, plus the higher cost of fuel, the west coast is not worth it. But our problem is that, for whatever reason, our dispatcher is trying to do everything possible to get us to the west coast, specifically California. We keep telling him that it’s not better, yet he thinks that a $1.85/mile load to Washington is better than a $2.55/mile load anywhere on the east coast. Smh

You need to figure out your cost per mile to operater your truck. Take into account your fixed cost and variable cost. As a team you should be making at least $3 mile loaded if you hauling produce even in this economy. If you and your wife are not getting that you have the wrong broker. I'm a single owner operator with my own truck and trailer and I run under my own authority and I average $3.19 loaded miles so far th8s year. All my miles loaded and empty is a average of $2.48 per mile. I run mainly between Texas and Illinois or Kansas City and I have doing that for 8 years. As a team you should be run northwest Oregon in summer time and then Huma Arizona during produce season. Good luck and I hope everything works out for the both of you.

First off the west coast used to be the money the mid west and north east Is the money, secondly add stop and no money my truck not moving fam this thing don’t run on air, 3rd I stay away from multi stops they generally try and get over and lastly if your broker Is not with you he don’t work for you! He’s getting a cut and trying to pocket it! It’s your truck you run it hope you see fit all money not good money
@KaylaTaylorTrucking

I really don’t know how to figure out if he’s pocketing money, and I don’t want to assume that, but these loads don’t make sense! The fact that he doesn’t care about us having to use more fuel or more time is outrageous lol

@@KaylaTaylorTrucking do you have access to the load board that they use? If not sign up for a free trial of the DAT load board and next time he sends you a load you can look it up. Just make sure it’s coming from the same broker

You should always be targeting at least 3 dollars a mile. The lowest is 2.5. If I am not mistaken, you are doing reefer, right? Reefer usually are always in 3+ dollars. From experience, multi drop loads are usually a hit or miss. You could make money in California especially produce. It sounds like you need a better dispatch!

How much does it cost you to run the truck for that load and how much do you need to pay the bills at home I alway try for 7 dollars a mile the only time I did shitty loads was to get out of a bad area and that load was shitty and I alway try to stay south east from I 80 down and from Texas east I hope that make sense I hope this helped
