Ive said it before, the problem isnt the idea of gutter guards, its the crappy people behind it. If youre gunna install something like that it has to be entirely lined up perfectly with the roof, meaning they have to be custom made to form fit to your gutters, and not leave even a millimeter of gap, and they also would have to match the angle of your roof so its completely seamless. And also the holes would definitely need to be smaller and perfectly flattened, so as to not let much, if any at all, catch. With all of these things perfectly made and in place, it would almost certainly ever have any sort of issues, if at all. Everything would flow over them and go over the edge. But obviously, as you can probably guess, these would be insanely expensive and very few people would buy them, and so these companies make a really shitty version that simply cannot work as intended, because they dont put a singular ounce of care i to their construction.

I agree....They installed my gutter guards on angle making them same angle as roof which is incorrect(should be level) as rain water just runs over the guard and down front of gutter and drips down between gutter and facia. I took mine off as it STILL had shingle granules get into gutter then u have to remove guards to clean out granules.

I'm thinking of a frame that fits over the gutter, is attached to it on one side, and lines it with metal screening, which could be flipped up and over to just dump out all the gunk. That could be a workable solution.

@@Jeff82556 I'm not the OG poster but I'm aware of this issue. It happens because if not regularly maintained either the guards can build up larger debris on top of them or the gutter completely fills up with smaller debris. Depending on the build up pattern rain water can then become redirected to flow over the inside edge of the gutter & against the side of the house. This happens for years upon years, usually to the elderly who don't notice, & can end up developing into structural water damage.

This house im in, which was my grandparents. Only has gutters on the back porch, which was an add on long ago. But it has guards on them and look NOTHING like the ones I see in these vids. It has a solid plate with holes for the rain along with the screen on top for added. And when we still had pine trees back then, it never clogged up. The only issue it has now is leaking here and there from age. Ive no idea who it was my gramps used for that but it was long before all this Leaf Guard and other stuff thats so bad apparently.

I've done all kinds over the last two years and the other guy is right. High quality or dont bother. They only work if you get the high quality ones with mesh on top of grids with an overflow lip and a wingbak. Stops both sides from getting debris and the rest of debris resting on top you just wait a couple summers and pay the small fee to blow it off the roof (or do it yourself), rake it up to your lawn and mow over it. Easy peasy Edit Also forgot to mention ALL the high quality ones come with a transferable lifetime service and warranty. So a fee wouldn't be added in most cases if you wanted it blown off or cleaned.

Yep, best to clean them out periodically. But, in Melbourne Australia it is normally very windy when it rains. So if you have trees with large leaves near your house, the gutters will block up when you need them the most. No large trees near your house = no need for gutter guard. EDIT; in my 20 years of roof plumbing I’ve only ever installed it to 3 houses when the tree in question was council owned or the owner was adamant in keeping it.

Gutter guards are like most things in life. If you go cheap, you're going to get cheap. Do not get the chicken wire guards, do not get the plastic wire guards, and definitely do not get the spongy plastic guards (by far the worst). Get the rollover guards, aluminum guards, or steel mesh guards. They will still need to be cleaned from time to time, but if installed correctly, they will not need to be removed to clean them. If you're having to remove them to clean them, then you or your company did not install them correctly. Most of the cleanings I do, I simply use a leaf blower to clean off the guards, but if the blower isn't handy, I can just sweep them off.
@MM-fq9gi
@MM-fq9gi 9 месяцев назад
BS: It is easier to sweep off the top of gutter guards than dig into the gutter itself and downspouts. You will see the problem sooner and it won't silently clog up your downspouts. I installed A&M Gutter Guards, cost me less than $200 to do my entire home's gutters. For those that call for the most popularly advertised product, you could spend $2000 or more for the same house.

Notice how all the guards pictured in this video are at least one of the following: huge holes, parallel to the ground, and/or BROKEN? Get stainless micromesh gutter guards and install them securely, properly, and in line with the roof pitch, so that they are an extension of the profile of the roof, not parallel to the ground. Anything that can slide or roll off of your roof pitch will then also slide or roll off of the guards. Mine work perfectly. And no, water does not also roll off the guards, even in a heavy downpour.

I had a client one time ask me “how much more would it cost to remove the gutter guards?” while I performed a gutter clean out. I said that I won’t charge her to remove them. I removed the gutters guards and then cleaned out the gutters. I then proceed to her door and told her I was done and asked what I should do with her gutter guards. She then freaked out saying that she wanted me to remove the gutter guards only to clean the gutters and then put them back on. Some of those guards don’t like being removed and they end getting trashed by trying to remove them. Her husband then chewed her out about how she needs to stop trying to micromanage on how a job is performed and stopping telling contractors how to do their job. I only did gutter clean out for one summer and I can tell you that the worst gutters I cleaned out were the ones with those stupid gutter guards on them.

Hey guys, professional gutter installer here. Gutter guard is not a fool proof scheme (pine needles in particular are problematic) but the big thing is it keeps debree out of your downspout, a good wind storm will blow the stuff off your guard but if your spouts are clogged then all you have is one big rain barrel

Anyone who says always and never all the time probably hasn't been around much. Gutter guards work great in some conditions and fail utterly in others. It depends on many factors like the kinds of trees (and the leaves or needles they produce) and how much they overhang, the steepness of the roof and the style of guard you get. Some do better with large leaves, small leaves or needles. One thing that is true is that when these guards get so overwhelmed with crap that a homeowner calls someone, they are a major pain to clean - much harder than scooping it out of the open style. So charging more probably makes sense in most cases
@kyleg707
@kyleg707 8 месяцев назад
Those guards shown are just bad gutter guards. Sure even with guards on, debris will set on top, however it keeps your underground drains and downspouts clear as well as letting the gutter drain out. All it takes is a few debris to clog one hole and then the entire gutter wont drain. With a too of the line guard, debris could sit on top of the area where the hole is while the rest of the gutter drains.

I agree that the leaffilter type mesh screens could end up collecting gunk over time and become clogged themselves. But doesn’t his video contradict his message? Home inspector here. Not selling cleaning or guards. All gutters need cleaning, whether it is tiny roof granules or debris that comes off the roof as super fine almost dirt stuff. In heavy leaf or evergreen areas with lots of shedding they back up the water and cause damage to the roof sheathing, and then make cleaning the gutters even harder.

The Byers will clog over a year or two but they have a lifetime warranty against clogging, so they come out free of charge and clean them out. I tried gutter guards for a couple years and ended up taking them off. I live in the forest with huge pine trees all around my house. The pine needles would poke into the fine mesh and build up really quickly. It was a pain to clean them out and when I removed the gutter guards there was a ton of fine debris in the gutter. Now I just clean the gutters out a couple times during the fall with a leaf blower. If I time it right when the gutters are dry it takes about 10 minutes to clean them out.
