Series 4 Patrol vs 105 in my opinion. Safety - Patrol (a big one) Remote parts availability - 105 Price - Patrol Comfort - patrol LSD - Patrol (untill lockers) Driveline strength - Patrol Aftermarket accessories - 105 Engine reliability - 105 (the ZD is fine) Power - Patrol

I’d be looking into the tax write off further , it’s not as simple as it seems, considering it’s going to be a family vehicle as well , you’ll need log books , talk to a good accountant, about what can be claimed before deciding

The landcruiser 105 series only comes with a 1HZ diesel, it doesn't come with the 1HD-FTE diesel that everyone raves about. The 1HZ is a good motor, but as slow as a wet weekend. You won't buy a FTE converted 105 for your budget, and you would look at about 20k to convert one. We have a 105 with the 1FZ-FE petrol motor. Yes it use's fuel, but it's not that bad. Toyota is the winner hands down when it comes to spare parts. We had a wheel bearing go south of Carnarvon WA when we were travelling Australia in our 80 series. Got back to Carnarvon and they had bearings, spindle and everything that we needed in stock at Repco. We had waited day's for the same parts when at home in Sydney. Repco Carnarvon said they always have them in stock because 99% of farms and stations use Toyota, and parts are interchangeable between models. Just my two cents worth.

My only thought, don't go too old, you'll regret it. IMO an 80 is of the age now you would need to be fairly mechanically minded to keep it going. Don't even consider a 70 series, they're surprisingly small on the inside. And yeah, you'll need a trailer, once we had the fourth kid we got a camper trailer.
@gqwarrior6694
@gqwarrior6694 3 года назад
The beauty of the old rigs though is that they don't break anywhere near as much as newer rigs do & on the rare occasion they do break, you can fix it yourself if you want, often on the side of a track. The new rig, you need a tow & a kid with a laptop as well as A LOT more money to pay for the repairs. Maintenance wise, there's bugger all difference between old & new

Bang for your buck I do think the GU is probably the go. I've been hunting around a few 105s for a mate and wow its crazy the money the go for with 350 odd thousand kms. Even then most are the 4.5 Petrol. You can certainly bullet proof the Patrol and beyond the 3l they are extremely robust, flex well and reasonably comfy inside. The 105 is probably has a slightly more comfortable interior but price wise against a tidy GU, you will probably be in 80 serues territory anyhow. The problem is the diesels in the Cruisers are just so good and reliable and 6 cylinder hence they command higher prices. Plus you always have the Toyota tax. I feel a GU is the way to go. If it blows up you can always transplant an LS or even a Turbo Barra lol.

Hey Tyler, just thought I'd shed a little light with what you touched on with the patrols. Every man will probably jump on the band wagon about the patrols blowing up but it's only true to a degree. What Kaido mentioned, the grenade nickname plauged the DI models mostly due to an issue around cylinder 4, issues from over boosting, and some stuff linked to EGR. And to be honest, it's a pretty small engine pushing a fair bit of weight. The CRD managed to eliminate a lot of those issues with better modulation of the boost pressure and EGR management. They're a great engine for just running stock and with some subtle tuning you can get great economy and good numbers at the wheels as well. There's a plethora of information to back this up on the Patrol4x4 forum (if you feel a patrol is taking your fancy then jump on and make yourself known, they're a great crowd) not to mention a lot of owners who have both modified and unmodified rigs that have over half a million KMs on them, with no issues whatsoever. Best of luck either way mate!

P.s I won't deny a little bias, I've had a 2011 CRD ute for the last year coming off a 2012 BT50 and I bloody LOVE it.

Years ago I bought a zd patrol because you could get them for the low teens, with lowish ks. a td patrol was closer to 30k or you can get a clapped out one for around 20ks. If the zd blows i can drop in a td for under 10k easy, or better yet drop in a barra and still be ahead of the td in power, price, reliability and similar fuel eco too and less maintenance. I did look at the cruiser but objectively, the patrol is a better platform than the cruiser (even not taking into account price), and this isn't up for argument. Better diffs, gearboxes, transfercases and hand brakes. Just ask harry from fire to fork how many driveline components he has had replaced in 7 years of ownership (mutiple diffs and gearboxes). Pretty sure the 105 also didnt come with the 1hdfte, stuck with a non turbo 1hz so you're doing engine work no matter what, you're just so much more ahead in a patrol in terms of price. The 1hd fte IS better than a td42t no questions asked but it's really all about the price, otherwise we would all throw in a 6bt in our rigs wouldn't we. Patrol aftermarketparts are everywhere too, you can get a full set of barwork for easily under 1k on the second hand market and the GU remained mostly unchanged from 98-16 so theirs about 18 years of parts interchangeability for zd patrol, the CRD are fine, which are 2007+. s4 which is the newer shape came in 04 and still came with the zd30DI up until 2007. Don't bother with the di because only 2 shops in all of australia can tune them, the crd can be tuned by any diesel tuner.

Mate! Firstly 🎉🎉CONGRATULATIONS on the new addition to the family!🎉🎉 As for the patrol/cruiser debate I've literally just been through this decision. I have a hilux and wanted a solid axle vehicle aswell so after a long debate I went for a 2006 Patrol with the TD42TI engine. It is now running 35s twin locked, chopped with a tray and canopy ect ect ect and have upgraded the turbo which meant a complete overhaul of the cooling system, as you mentioned, and everyone else told me the engine will overheat it will die!! yadda yadda yadda blah blah anyway that's what I done. I've had it on few trips now towing a camper trailer and the temperature gauge sits pretty right where it should even under alot of right foot on knarly tracks the engine is rock solid. Done turbo, radiator, intercooller, water pump mods and upgraded all hoses to suit the mods. The only thing that kills these engines is heat if the right cooling system mods are done they are spot on. Price and parts availability was a deciding factor in my choice and again everyone told me get the Toyota. However since having the Patrol parts are easily sorced and cheap to boot! You can't go wrong with either of these vehicles at the end of the day when fully kitted out they will go side by side on the toughest tracks. What swayed my decision to the patrol was price. You do pay for Toyota's cult following and the patrol was cheaper and just as reliable if done right so that's what I went for. Congrats again on the baby news mate it was this Chanel that got me into the 4be scene when I moved to Ozz a few years ago, The Chanel has come a long long way mate, really great to see the decision to leave the classroom behind worked out for ya! Well done, keep up the great content. Looking forward to see what you go for with the new wheels!! Patrol or Cruiser you can't go far wrong and won't be disappointed!!once you have one on a track it's hard to feel anything but excitement👍

Each to their own and all 4wd’s have their pros and cons. Coming from a d22 Nissan navara, the Toyota Prado 150 is a much safer car to transport my family, is more capable off-road and has more accessories available. I also didn’t have to pay for a canopy given it’s a wagon. Everyone has their own opinion but at the moment I’m happy with my choice and I can’t see myself leaving the Toyota family for 4wd’s. I look forward to seeing what you go with 👍

Im in the market for a late model GXL 105. Tossed up beteeen that and the patrol so same sort of situation. It comes down to the reliability of the 105 for me with the 1hz. I think most 80s are getting long in the tooth right now. For me its going to be a late model 105 (came with airbags), country car, aftermareket turbo by berima diesel and some off road mods. Common rail nissan = more power but i dont like the idea of pushing a small displacement motor. As well as common rail maintaince being $$$ e.g injectors. 1hz is slow but unkillable and easy to work on, and slow can be fixed with a modest turbo as long as you keep egts down

For the sake of your channel, most people are nissan or toyota. People who watch your channel and subscribe, are obvious nisaan as a general rule. You may think buying a toyota will open up another world of viewer's. But me personally wouldn't watch them. And start looking elsewhere for more nissan stuff. So maybe you could lose veiwers because toyotas are everywhere and endless competition on youtube. 3.0 litre's just need a much bigger intercooler, but common rails are fine. Dont buy mazda and shit like that you will get no viewers. Advice.. dont put your finger in to many pies stick to one brand if you want to keep/get more viewers.

Classic Tyler Thompson. Open and transparent, and tells it how it is. Good onya mate. 👍✊ I have an 80 Series Landcruiser and it's a keeper. ♥ But I also think a GU Patrol is definitely the better value for money buy at the moment. You're getting a newer vehicle with less kms, for less money. And for a family car, having better safety features (like airbags etc.) is as important as it's 4WD capabilities. And for a $25k budget, good luck finding an 80 or 100 diesel that has less than 400k kms on the clock, that hasn't been modified already. So, as much as I am a Land Cruiser fan, common sense says, look for a GU Patrol instead. Besides, there are already so many RU-vidrs using Landcruisers. If you get a GU Patrol, you'll be unique. It'll be nice seeing a different 4WD used in RU-vid for a change. All the best on your search.🤞

The landcruiser is an 8 seater too , so you can have another baby. I wouldn’t replace the Navara with a Dmax. We can’t wait to get rid of ours. When you say you can write it all off on tax, do you mean you’ll be able to claim any expenses as a tax deduction against your income and depreciate the capital investment? As opposed to writing it all off on tax? It seems to be a common misconception that it ends up costing nothing which is absolutely not the case.

Is it because of cape york track 😄 great vid btw. I'm a Toyota man but it seems when the going gets tough people choose Nissan for its driveline (have heard of how great Nissan LSDis compared to Toyota so just need to put a locker at the front. Anyway the crazy track you take that Navara I don't know how much difficult you want to reach with solid axles and 35" tyres. Here's some nissan vid from a guy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pIsoHTlMjwc.html have a look at his series there's an 80 series and how much it lags. Truly 4wdaction on steroids.

Both are very capable and reliable 4x4's. I have a mate with a 105, and I've got a GU with the TD42. Cruiser is definitely more comfortable and seems to have more room inside, so perhaps the slightly more practical option. I do love my Patrol though and even though it's pretty agricultural (noisy and slow) it's super reliable and I think it speaks volumes that the engine now has over 600,000km and has never been rebuilt. Having said that, if I was in your situation with a growing family I'd be leaning towards a late model GU common rail as you get more safety features as well as a newer & lower kilometre vehicle. Plus there's still plenty of them getting around with little or no modifications. Good luck with the search, and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures in future. 👍

Re Patrol vs Cruiser... I assume that you're only looking at diesels. 105 Cruiser is the way to go there I reckon. You pay the price for them and generally their overall condition is worse and ks higher. But they are reliable, and in the middle of nowhere that is well worth it. If you could find a 4.2 patrol, that would be great. Great car, great motor. Every bit as good as a cruiser. The Landcruiser will cost a little more but you can be in a reasonable diesel 105 for under 20k. You should end up with a car that has decent paint and might have quite a few Ks on it but when they last a minimum 500 thousand and up to a million that's not necessarily a problem. And they can come with ABS and dual airbags, so long as you find the right car they're ok on the safety front for their age. When you buy the car there will be stuff to go through that's the same for both brands. Stuff like going through and replacing all your suspension bushes, shocks, springs, replacing a CVs, rebuilding swivel housings, wheel bearings etc. Parts cost and availability is going to be a bit of a thing there. Theres just more competition out there in the world of cruisers so while they're still not cheap (what 4wd is), you've got all the usual suspects and then the likes of terrain tamer as well that do some pretty good gear. Cruiser has a higher axle rating as well. Total axle ratings on the cruiser is 3500kg with a GVM of 3180kg. That higher axle rating means that it's easier to upgrade the GVM to the 3500kg axle capacity. The GU has a 3060kg GVM and can be increased to 3495 but requires the coil towers to be strengthened and revised axle capacities, all of which comes with additional cost. So downsides of the gu, simply reliability. How far can you trust the 3L? Yes they went to CRD in the later ones but that doesn't solve the issues around EGR etc. If you're lucky it does solve the overboost issues but you're a braver man than me to put your faith in the ZD30. The engineering simply wasn't done properly on it in the first place, case in point, they had dealers shorten the dipstick cause they'd failed to specify the correct oil volume. Given the shoddy job they did on it to start with and the absolutely undeniable problems that arose as a result, that engine is a massive risk. Even if the new ones are better I'd argue that's exactly what the job of a band-aid is, to make stuff just a little better. I don't think they truly fixed all of the underlying issues though. I'm not trying to say the patrol is a bad vehicle. Just that the ZD30 is a bad engine, the rest vary from good to fantastic. Onto the cruiser... If you buy a 105 diesel it comes with the 1hz. It is a non turbo indirect injection motor. It is slow, thirsty for the output power, but is an excellent chance of outliving your grandchildren. That said, if you buy one that someone has put a turbo on you'll wish you took your chances on the ZD30. The head on them is not designed for boost, they do not like it and they will ventilate the piston crown at the first opportunity. What's more, Toyota put a smaller gearbox and clutch in them to go with the reduced power output of the 1hz and they to do not like the extra power a turbo puts through them. Even if you take up the marketing hype of a "turbo spec" 1hz (better pistons and rods paired with the same root cause issue of the head) and it does survive a while you're going to burn out the clutch and probably blow 5th gear. As far as solutions go, you can still buy a brand new r151 box for them from Toyota at a cost of a little under 3k. If the car is still non turbo, that's not a bad deal, especially when you consider the costs of a rebuild. Otherwise, it can be replaced with the h150 or h151 out of the 80 series or (IFS) 100 series. They're about twice the size of the r box and 10 times stronger, hence they were used behind the 1HD (same block as a 1hz, but with factory turbo and a direct injection head to support it) series motors. The 5th gear issue is due to the splines not running the full width of the gear and an upgraded replacement is available. It's also well worth noting that the weaker r series box is still more than capable of handling the standard power output of the 1hz and if left unmodified the first thing to go will be the synchro rings somewhere around that half million mark. So yeah, ZD30 has more power and is cheaper but is fundamentally flawed and full of electronics with a life expectancy of somewhere in the 300k km range. 1Hz non turbo is slow, reliable, simple mechanical injection and repairable and can be expected to last somewhere north of 500k km. Regarding diffs, the cruiser has a reputation for weaker diffs, though I don't personally put a lot of stock in that. I suspect that it's mostly to do with poor driving practices than anything else, especially as those same people will claim it to be a Hilux diff (it's not). It can however be improved by fitting a solid pinion spacer in order to maintain proper pinion preload, particularly on the front diff. Presumably you'll be fitting lockers so that's a bit of a no brainer upgrade to do at the same time. Another consideration is that the crusier (in gxl format) comes as full time 4wd. The improvement in handling characteristics and consequently safety on unsealed roads is a massive plus. The cost to that is a little more slop in the drivetrain to take up when you take your foot off the clutch but you very quickly get used to that and stop noticing it. You also get to engage the equivalent of a part time 4wd without leaving the driver's seat by locking the centre diff (standard feature on full time models). You also don't have hubs to deal with and carry parts for, improving the overall strength and reliability of the drivetrain. The next weakest link is the CV, but don't do silly things and they're fine, you won't damage one. Driver error is what causes the issues there. Other cruiser issues worth mentioning are cracking the welds on the front pan hard and trailing arm mounts. If you replace the original rubber bushes with polyurethane you will at some point crack some welds. If you keep the rubber they don't break. That means things like caster correction bushes are out, if you lift it you should replace the arms. They are available at fairly reasonable cost though from places like big-o-4x4. You don't have to go the superior ones at the cost of a small mortgage. The reason they crack is that the poly ones are just too stiff and cause excess shock loading on those components. Worse comes to worse, they are easy to weld up though. Next, early model cruisers had a smaller sector shaft with fewer splines in the steering box, if you run 35s they are more likely to fail. Toyota replaced that with a larger diameter shaft later on, it also requires a new Pitman Arm to go with it. Later 105s came with the larger one from factory. I've tried to be as fair as I could and explain some of the issues that can come with cruisers and why they occur. Even with that, Patrols suffer in much the same ways. You make a decision to move away from how the manufacturer supplies a vehicle and there is inevitably a tradeoff being made between performance and reliability. At least now you know about them and can avoid them. As I said, Cruiser is definitely the way to go IMO. The powertrain reliability just isn't there in the patrol and that's easily seen in the average longevity of them, including the later series ones and unmodified ones. If there's a diesel engine rebuilder without a pile of ZD30s it's because they've just had the scrap bloke visit. The cruiser has its issues but all are the results of modifications poorly made. I think that about covers it.

@@TylerThompson90 Also, forgot to mention that the Patrol is about 100kg heavier on standard kerb weight. So you get about 200kg more payload in standard form and around 100kg more if you upgrade the GVM to 3.5t on both. The cruiser also has the full 3.5t towing if that's something that you're considering.

Gday Tyler, I’m a long time watcher. First time commenter. Great content on your channel! If it were my vehicle I’d get a 105 or an 80. But as you’re a Nissan guy and a patrol would be half the price I’d go with that. Instead of an dmax or a Mazda would you consider getting a Toyota hilux and doing a solid axel conversion? I think that would make for some great content. You could do tracks and demonstrate how far you can go with IFS and then come back and finish tracks which you couldn’t after the conversion. Plus the build process has including an axel swap would be intriguing

Nothing wrong with zd30 patrol. I have owned multiple zd30 powered patrols & never had any issues with the motor blowing up. This “urban myth” can be attributed to clogged intakes as a result of exhaust gas recirculation. Most modern diesel engines suffer the same problem. Fit a quality catch can and change your oil regularly you shouldn’t have any issues. My current rig is a series 4 patrol running a Direct Injection ZD30 and it’s a beast

If i was going a older 4x4 id probably chose one not common rail just for the fact older proven technology and definitely not as sensitive if u get crap fuel. So if a patrol the td42 and 80 series if a land cruiser. That being said if u can hold of to next year the grenadier would be a nice platform to do a build series on and being a new car the tax right off would b better. Its coiled and solid axle. Also think you get a lot of views with it. Only down fall if remote travel parts might be hard to get being a new thing

Looks like exciting times ahead Tyler. New project 4WD and a new baby. 👍 As for new areas to visit, why not try the Watagans NP and Yengo NP at the Central Coast? I can't remember you having done them. And maybe even sneak an overnight camp at Blacksmiths Beach which has been a long time since you've been. And as for your new project 4WD, GU Patrols is so much better value for money right now compared to the LC80/LC100. I have an LC80 and I love it to bits, but right now you won't find a decent diesel LC80/LC100 that is grandpa spec for your budget. And those nearing your budget are either already modified, and/or heavily used for 4WDing (its a 4WD after all), and all will have around 400,000 kms on them. Smart money says Patrol. But if you get a Landcruiser, one thing you can almost be guaranteed on, you will get more views from non-subscribers (if your videos are tagged/titled "Landcruiser"). So question is, is the extra money asked for an older and more used Landcruiser worth it, to get move views? Might be worth considering. Which ever you get, looking forward to the build series.

Most of my mates run 90 and 105 series Landcruisers. You would want the factory turbo engined ones, but as you have found, these are insanely expensive at the moment. I run a 2000 MY GU patrol (ZD30 Di engine) and it crapped itself at 285 thousand kilometers. It now has a remanufactured ZD30, new turbo and fuel pump and runs great. The problem with mine and the later (more reliable) ZD30s is there is not much room to tune for torque (essentially zero options with the pre-2007 Di). I am seriously considering a Cummins 4.5L or Izuzu 4JJ1 conversion in the next few months as my truck struggles up hills when loaded up for touring, and I want to be able to tow in future. It is just not going to happen with the Di ZD30. But the 4JJ1 or 4.5L can easily put out more than twice the torque of a ZD30 on stock internals. So consider buying a great condition late model Patrol with a clapped out engine, and budget for that engine conversion (the 4JJ1 conversion looks surprisingly cost effective at maybe 10k or less, while the Cummins 4.5L is a monster, but costing 30k or more for the conversion).

For longevity, reliability, serviceability in remote places.. Toyota all the way... yes you can build a TOUGH pootrol, but a 1hd-fte auto 100 series is in my choice of the best sub 50k 4x4... stay away from 4cyl Nissan engine, stay away from high mile 1hz that's been boosted... both have massive aftermarket products available... but in saying that a 150 3lt prado is a bloody awsom option if you don't need the extra room the cruiser offers....

ZD30 CRD mate is a solid engine and can produce good power safely with a tune. All the issues were with the earlier model DIs. There'll still be naysayers out there. The NATS protection which you hear about was there to stop the ZD30s 'grenading' is only necessary for the DIs. 2007 CRD onwards and they are a nice little powerplant. I love cruisers, but can't justify the prices with km's at the moment. Nissan all the way with current prices in my opinion. I got one 12 months ago, 112,000kms with some fruit for $29,000.

I find everyone does 79s, 80s and Gq/Gu builds. 105s just aren't that well documented on RU-vid. Anyone who says their drivelines are weak have no sympathy for them. Definitely takes a lot of wheel bounce and limiter revving to bust a diff. Not as easy as people make it seem. And they're reasonably cheap. Last of the Solid axle+ 4coils, killer combo
