I've got a 4.8 myself, they're a great engine you won't regret it. Water crossing aren't an issue with them as the coil packs are sealed really well, it's only old school pettys with distributors you need to worry about. Must do mods will be your diff ratios for when running bigger tyres. The auto 4.8s run the tallest gears of all patrols (3.5 ratio). So with big tyres it really affects the driving and the way the auto behaves. You will want 4.11 ratio for 33s and 4.3 ratio for 35s. Apart from that, probably extend all your breathers to your engine bay.
@banjocambo4359

Too true, really hard to crawl once the bigger tyres are on unless you do diff ratios

@@4x4mate38 depends how well you want the car to drive. Fixing the gearing is one of the best and cheapest ways to improve how the car drives. If you started off with factory tyres and went to 33s or 35s then you should notice the auto not shifting properly, particularly on take off and small inclines when doing 100. However, if you have a manual there is no problem, as the gearing is more suited to bigger tyres.

It is awesome to see that you are keeping it real and have picked up an older car in great condition to add to the program. Too many channels are buying expensive new toys and over modifying them. The average person just can’t justify the toys use by ‘The Explore Life’ and ‘All4Adventure’ etc.

Meant to be, Tyler. So exciting when you land a second hand vehicle in that condition and with such low mileage. A rare find indeed. Glad you went petrol too. I have a Lexus LX570 - the 5.7L petrol V8 puts a smile on my face every morning and it eats it up offroad. The smoothness, reliability and lower serving costs more than make up for the fuel costs. Looking forward to the mods.

Congrats Tyler. Fantastic buy mate! As far as I'm concerned GU's are unmatched off-road. Coil sprung, bullet-proof drive-line. I have a 2005 TD42, and if ever something happens to it, without a second thought i'll be going for another GU. Don't fret on the engine and/or fuel economy mate. Just drive it and use and enjoy it for what it is... ! You won't regret it. Enjoy!!!

@@TylerThompson90 just a thought for paint protection. You mentioned possibly going for a wrap, maybe wrap it with your channel logo? Places like sinorama and other advertising/marketing specialists can do full car wraps. A good example would be what Sam Eyles did on Built not Bought. Still use original filter factory fitted, replace once a year, no issues, throttle controllers ??? Dunno what your talking about there. Engine rattling ??? again dunno what your talking about, mine's fine as is the UHF antenna. Amazes me what folks find to complain about with their Patrols. Emissions control system strangle and kill them with carbon. So that is WTF he was talking about.

@@itchyvet Don’t worry to much about the Nissan ZD30 Haters, they are all just Secretively Jealous, especially if you’ve got a good one. (Mines a 2002 with 400,000 on the clock) Answering your question on throttle controllers, they are for vehicles that have an electronic throttle cable. (Nissan Patrol 2006 onwards) They basically control how quickly the engine responds to changes in throttle position, when set slow for driving the rough stuff if you unintentionally press the accelerator (foot not wedged against the kick panel) over a bump the engine won’t take off.

Well done on the purchase. I don't think you will be disappointed - looks in neat condition. One suggestion I'd make is to ensure you manually lock the hubs when you go off-road, especially in sand/mud. I used the auto-locking option most of the time when I first got mine and shagged out the OEM hubs in about 25,000 km. At that time, I had no idea auto-locking hubs don't engage as fully as manual. The auto-locks can also disengage completely if you go in reverse. For a little extra effort, manually engaging them will perform better and last longer. If you do flog them out, AVM after-market ones are great and you don't need to use a tool to lock/unlock them.

That engine is fantastic. Great performance. Great sound. And it just has a really nice feel to it. Make sure you enjoy it for what it is, and for what it gives you. If you obsess over fuel consumption then you are only focussing on the negative, and you are missing out. You are going to pay for the fuel anyway. Focus on the benefits you are getting from that. The smile it puts on your face. The feeling in your gut when it pushes you into the seat. I had a Disco 3 petrol V8. I always told people "It would use a lot less fuel if it didn't sound so damn good".

Nice rig mate, looking forward to the build series. I’d strongly suggest that you get the auto transmission serviced/flushed , a transmission cooler and a torque converter lock up kit fitted. All of this will help you in preventing automatic transmission failure due to overheating when towing, additional strain caused by larger tyres, beach driving and auto run away on down hill trails. When Off-roading, drive it like a manual, makes a big difference compared to leaving it in D. Good luck and looking forward to seeing the build series 👍👍

I don't think you'll regret getting a petrol, I bought a petrol Hilux for some of the reasons you mentioned like maintenance cost. Petrols generally don't have distributors or high tension leads any more, combined with diesels moving to electronic fuel injection = diesels losing their water crossing advantage imo. First mod? One thin to think bout when getting bigger tyres is to keep the stock tyres and rims for street use and put the big muddies on when going off road. My Bride had a TD42 GQ which came with (factory) rear swaybar link disconnectors & we put manual, front ones on ot which was worth half a gear uphills. That means we got to hold gears longer on uphill runs which proved handy at times. With 33" tyres & a front locker (because the rear LSD was so good) it was almost unstoppable & I found myself looking for harder lines to drive. Without a huge number of modifications you should find yourself being very happy with the GU. Happy trails.

You'll be vert happy with the petrol power on sand they go so good with instant power unlike a Diesel. I think you made a great choice mate looking forward to seeing you enjoy it.

Welcome to the patrol gang..nice buy..I've had my 4.5 for 20 years now with 370k now on it and still going strong so yours not even run in yet..firm believer in snorkel and headers/exhaust to make them breathe better and a petrol can definitely suck water in... Rear lsds are good so alot just put front locker in..also good idea to manually lock front hubs on harder tracks... Great place to source spares from is patrolapart / navarapart down here in Melbourne .. Look forward to build series..

what a score! I've got a 4.5 petrol, auto - gives so much control when offroading youll love it. the rear LSD works great too. Ive only got a 2 inch lift and 33's but youll find thats more then adequate. One thing you might to consider when upgrading tyre size and adding weight is chnaging the diff ratios, youd probaly want 4.3. as for fuel im seeing around 20l/100 average, depending on drive type so expect an increase with bigger tyres/lift/weight. otherwise bulletproof. ive also added an extension to the rear barn door checkstrap so it opens fully now. keen to see what you do with this.
