Helpful Gear for Camping, Backpacking, and Field Sciences

In this video, I give an informal overview of most the gear I bring on expeditions to the high Andes for geologic field work. This will be helpful if you are an undergraduate approaching field camp, or even simply your first field experience. Of course, you DO NOT need all the things I show in this video. I highlight the unfortunate fact that getting durable and protective gear can be very expensive (in some cases preventing people from being able to pursue their passion). But hopefully it is also made clear that you don’t need the NICEST stuff out there. I get by with lots of old and second-hand materials in some of the most rugged environments on Earth. Please let me know if you have any questions - and thank you for accepting my casual delivery. A lot on my mind prior to an expedition!
Let me know if you have questions about gear, including if you face barriers to access adequate field gear.

Interesting vid! That outro ist probably the most badass depiction you can make of a geologist. PS. were on the fenix 7 still

haha geology is badass. And re: the fenix thanks for the info. I think I want to save some money and get the newest version when I can. I've had the 5x since spring 2018.

Delivered with humor and humility. (And experience!)Love your videos. Also loved the pants pants comic that made a brief appearance 😆👍

Kick ass, being out in the field is one of the best part of science for me! Curious if you do all large field expeditions like this or if you also do smaller more “test site” type geologic experiments given the nature of your work?

yo Jack. Any expeditions to other countries are large like this just because it is so time consuming and expensive. In the western US however we will go out for single weekends and explore certain places to see if they are of interest. That is one huge benefit of living in the western US as a field geologist interested in mountain building - there are important components of the system from Mexico to Canada (and beyond), so you can just go on a weekend camping trip that might turn into a legit research project. Or at least plant a seed for future ideas.

Hi Caden, I study geological engineering in Montreal, Canada. Your video is really helpful, going in for my first field season in the territory of the Baie James in the far north of Quebec!

my questions: how do you keep your soft cover books from getting destroyed? and how does a piece of clothing from when you were 9 still fit you?
@cadenhowlett
@cadenhowlett 3 месяца назад
haha they have always held together for me fortunately. The copy of Borges' Collected Fictions has been on all three expeditions and I had to use packing tape to resecure the front cover. Paperbacks usually come back from the field with some character lol. I have also finished and left books down there in random hostels and what not

Can I have a question about the combination of FieldMove and Strabospot? How ar you combining them? Do you use parts of them for specific purposes?
@cadenhowlett
@cadenhowlett 3 месяца назад
I use primarily FieldMove for mapping and measurements but my field partner Chance uses Strabo, so our data spans across both softwares. I like the built in stereonet in FieldMove - but there is an awesome lasso feature in Strabo that allows you to quickly collect data of interest (say around a specific field site) and then bring it into Allmendinger's stereonet app. I use FieldMove because it is extremely easy to export .mve files and open them in the Petex MOVE software on the computer when I get home from the field.

Big ups from New Zealand tectonics are sick, what made you choose to pursue a PHD in it?

NZ has some amazing geology. I did an undergrad in geology bc I wanted to be outside and over time I found out how interesting the research and exploration aspect can be. Never was a good student and had no idea where it would take me. It's a great challenge and a fortunate life

Rather than USA, Australia or UK can you suggest me a best and cheap country to study bachelor's in geology.
@cadenhowlett

Ya know man I don't really know how costs vary across countries. Maybe somewhere in South America or the Middle East. It would probably be cheapest to study geology in your home country, if possible.
