I found it helps if you bring food she loves and have strangers give the dog treats. That improves their attitude from fear to desire to bum a snack. Once you get to there, the fear is gone even if they don't get that snack. Of course you do have to first get her comfortable enough near people to even be interested in snacks in the first place. If a dog is too fearful, you can't start with snacks because the flight desire is stronger but once you get that toned down enough, then you can use snacks to help override the fear that is left. (interestingly fearful horses are very similar)

Brilliant. As a therapist of 30 years I know a little bit about the Principles of Learning and Behaviour. This video demonstrates outstanding application and execution of those principles. The steps he takes are small enough so the dog can follow without fear. His explanations are spot on. Last, most important, he leads with presence in a calm manner. Thanks. Goodbye to the haters.

@samwdavis
@samwdavis 6 месяцев назад
@@noranneduffy I'm glad that you're feeling encouraged! That's great!!! Treating fear goes against the natural inclination of 99% of dog owners. Do NOT comfort the dog when it's afraid. You're actually rewarding and encouraging the fearful behavior. Do NOT avoid the situations that cause the fear. Again, you're rewarding and encouraging the fearful behavior. The secret is what's shown in the Dog Daddy's video. Push the dog beyond its thresholds and force it to confront its fears while advocating for the dog and helping it to learn that it's going to be OK, and enforce your role as the leader. Leader does NOT equate to tons of affection. It equates to protection and giving clear direction, rules and boundaries. Think tough love. The result will be a much more calm and happy dog and a much more healthy relationship with its owner. You can do it!!

I rescued a dog from Battle buddies in Hinesville Georgia that had been there for almost 2 years he had been there since he was 6 weeks old and nobody would adopt him because he was so skittish.. I went there every day for 6 days in a row and spent all day with him trying to win him over with fresh cooked chicken meat that I had cooked for him the night before to take the next day to try to get him to want to come home with me cuz he was scared to death.. I'm not a dog trainer so I didn't know how to go about anything except trying to win him over with love and affection and chicken meat.. I've had him for now 15 months and he's starting to make progress after all this time.. I make homemade dog food with the best ingredients he gets the best life the best love he gets to sleep in my bed.. he has been a handful trying to get him to not be skittish and.. he is at the point where he can run around on the property now with no leash and he doesn't try to run away and he has just learned to sit.. That's how damaged he was I don't know how he got that damaged being at the shelter except for being neglected and not loved enough that will kill something lack of love... I love my doodles more than anything on the planet he's my boy. I know he loves me so much.. he's just got so a long way to go.. ❤

As an autistic person it makes sense. You're providing a sensory experience (the collar) that is stronger than the fear response. And because of that, it can ground the dog in the reality of the present moment. It's communication. Sometimes it has to be strong to get the dogs attention.
@honorclarkescatacomb67
@honorclarkescatacomb67 5 месяцев назад
You're right. The truth is actually not only does that apply to autistic people, it applies to just about all people and animals (except sociopaths. Their brains aren't wired to feelings like most people. For most people, long term memory is tied to an emotion, smell, sound, sight, etc. ). According to psychologists, most people will do more to avoid pain, than they will to gain pleasure, and more to avoid definite pain than potential pain. So, to use your example, a sensory experience (the collar) is definite and now. It's here in the present. While the fear is of a potential experience.

I think it also helps that the dog is shown what to do in that situation, a fearful dog finds comfort in following orders and following a good leader. Following orders also helps distract from fear and pretty soon it is confronting the fear and realizing nothing bad happened either.

Do you think a hair shirt would have helped you be more sociable? The collar is totally wrong.
@andreawijnaendts2550
@andreawijnaendts2550 4 месяца назад
@atticusandwinifred3274 have you ever had a fearful or agressive dog? Have you ever had children? Would you disagree with immersion therapy for human phobias? Prong collars have a bad rep because idiots and assholes use them incorrectly. It is something that should only be used with professionals. I have personally seen this used on a human, by another human, for demonstration. It is painful and dangerous if you don't fir or use it properly. The same is true for almost every piece of equipment in our lives. The difference here is this dog will die if it is not helped. Not maybe... WILL. Who is more abusive? The trainer who uses clear messages, equipment and training... or the person who believes only positive training is acceptable so tells the owners to put the dogs down?

So it was the prong collar that made the positive difference for Trudy. I’m so glad you posted her video today, Augusto, because I have been thinking about her and wondering how she went from a scared timid dog to that dog who walked with me and looked up at me with soft sweet eyes when I said Good Girl and tickled around her ears. She made such a major change it was like I couldn’t wrap my mind around it, it was a mystery to me. The difference before and after the prong collar is obvious and remarkable. The difference is striking, Augusto. Thank you. Even her owners were surprised and pleased at her progress, a totally different dog. Did they send you an update on her? I’m just so glad I got to see this today.

We have a Anatorian shepherd that is suddenly scared of my dad but he has done nothing for her to fear but her hips are hurting at two years old and we think she is scared of being abandoned by my dad because she was abandoned by a man and ended up so malnourished that we could feel the individual ribs. The thing is that she became scared after she started yelping when touched and we've had her for over a year with no fear and only over affection and happy waging of the tail when we get back from school or work. The moral of the story is that everyone, including humans, pets and non-pets, will never forget the pain they went through but fear it will happen again unless taught that there is stability (She is still scared as it only started a few hours ago)

I had a foster dog (she was from puppy mill and they were done breeding her) so scared she would hid under anything to get away. Was so scared & timid. After a day of letting her get to know the place, I put one of those tie at your waist and to dog collar things on. Everywhere I went, she had to go. And I had a dog. I took them outside together. She was so scared. Within a week, she was different. She stopped hiding. Eventually, she would go outside. What a mess some of these puppy mill dogs are. We had one more that came in, same time. The girl that fostered her didn’t want to make her did what I did. And the dog kept hiding. Months of that. She finally gave the dog to another foster because she didn’t have the heart to do what I did.

When is too early for a fearful dog to have a prong collar used? I have a shelter dog 2.5 years old approximately. She is only 2 months out of shelter. She is moving forward but I can't walk her even in backyard yet. She does potty outside but doesn't stay out long. She is scared both in house and outside. Should I allow her to naturally decompress and become comfortable for 3 months before a prong collar? Try martingale first? She resists martingale though I don't use pressure at all. Martingale is just so collar stays on. Thank you.

I couldn't handle walking the strip in Las Vegas because I'm so sensitive to all types of stimulus and I even started to cry (I'm 22 with autism). I wonder if these strategies can apply to me. Either way, I know what a fearful dog feels

This is quite fascinating! I can see how it gets the dog's attention. Dog Daddy I wonder if the prong collar would work on a fearful dog that is 5-10lbs?

I have GSDs, and have for decades. I rescue, foster, foster fail ... and always have a revolving pack. I Love Pinch Collars! I will not use any other type for training and walks. My dogs learn so quickly, as is the dog in the video. Dogs are pack animals. If there is no pack leader to take charge, the dog has no idea what to do. Humans need to step up and take the leadership role. Pinch collars put a slight bit of pressure around the entire neck, very similar to the way a momma dog grasps her pups. It gives the dog a sense of having a leader of the pack.

i've got a 7 year old small dog, who is not afraid of any dog, doesn't bark at any other dog but was given to me when he was 4 and didn't have any walking expierence. (was raised with more than four large dogs from a puppy) Take him for walks every day, wonder if the prong collar would help. Such a sweet dog i'd just not like to do that but would like him to not stop every ten seconds on our walks.

I like your accent. Where are you from? Keep on blessing others with your gift of dogs. It's truly beautiful to watch you transform these precious gifts from God. I share my account with my sons so ill will sign off as mom from now on.

My puppy is SO afraid that she growls and if people try to pet her, she acts like she is going to nip. She basically lives under my feet or behind my legs when around people. Since she is way more reactive, isn't this going to make her freak out more?

This collar would be absolutely forbidden in my country because it causes pain to the dog.. Of course, quick results are achieved with it, but... there are many other options and methods I'm really surprised at what is allowed in your country, and how many praising comments there are here under the video about a method that would be banned in my country and would lead to charges and penalties.

I watch my neighbors dog. he is in a wheel chair so I take the dog out to potty and walks. He doesn't go after other dogs for his daddy but for me.its awful he pulls me down for other dogs bikes squirrels what have u... I don't know how to get him to stop.. I live in a busy apartment building with 12 floors and a lot of other animals. He's not mean it's not attacking he wants to play. But I am exhausted to where I almost can't handle him 😢
