Suomenlinna (also known as Viapori in Finnish and Sveaborg in Swedish) is a sea fortress located on an archipelago of six islands off the coast of Helsinki, Finland. Its construction began in the mid-18th century when Finland was part of Sweden. The fortress was designed by Swedish Admiral Augustin Eherensvärd, who adapted Vauban’s theories to the unique geographical features of the region. Suomenlinna has a rich history and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It serves as a popular visitor attraction, offering museums, guided tours, and beautiful views of the surrounding sea and islands3. If you plan to visit, I recommend starting at the visitor center, where you can get information and tips for exploring this fascinating historical site.
Kustaanmiekka (also known as Gustavssvärd in Swedish) is the southernmost of the eight islands that form the Suomenlinna district of Helsinki, Finland. It’s a narrow channel of water, just 81 meters wide, between Suomenlinna and Vallisaari. Large passenger ships entering or leaving from Helsinki’s South Harbour have to carefully pass through this strait, making quite a sight. The name “Kustaanmiekka” is often used to refer to both the island and the strait itself. Fun fact: The strait has been described as the “Gibraltar of the North” due to its strategic location at the mouth of Helsinki’s harbor.
