Becoming a martial legend during a crusade is one thing but dont forget: Andre made a space marine chaplain smile. Not just any, but a reclusiarch. Guy is a legend

@@barrydalton4743 I think the Crimson Fists would have gone with Grimaldus, they're far into the "save the civilians" grouping of Astartes but not as far as Salamanders are, also the potential loss of the civilians is a tragedy, but killing the warboss would have drastically destabilized the Orks in the area and likely fewer would have died overall.

well, the voice actor is one man...lol one man does all the voices, he is the one who read the audio book.. I also believe that Boylan had a couple of extra people to do VA, IE ladies. lol also Chapter Master Valrak?? I think.. is the voice of the Thunderhawk pilot. Other wise everyone else is Jonathan Keeble, a audio book reader for GW
You know, I hated it too, but watching this again after listening to the audiobook, I don't hate it. It's actually rather fitting. The best part of this is that as the video progresses, the quality of the animation and the details that are drawn improves and expands progressively. Not just a result of the animators getting better as this (originally being an episodic animatic) gained popularity, but also a beautiful way to showcase how this entire movie is a from-memory retelling: The further back in memory you go, the more details which are lost and the fuzzier/less clear the memories become.
I myself rationalized it as part of BTs', and astartes as a whole, incredible focus on battle and almost nothing else - their minds automatically blurs out/omits certain parts of their attention and memories to better remember fighting, as if nothing else in their minds actually matters. Battle experience eternally preserved and pristine, while everything else, just fades, remembered just enough to have consistent timetable of places, faces, actions, ready to be recalled if needed, but otherwise, very low on totem pole of priorities.
dont mind me. just rewaching. but the best part of this series is this is fanmade and crushes everything GW has ever, or will ever produce. you cant buy that level of awesome with pure gold.
So dumb. He literally just rendered it differently and slapped a filter on it to make it look as ugly as possible. I'm glad you mentioned that though because I wouldn't have skipped ahead to see how horrible the animation is without the stupid filters.

This was one of the first Wh40k media I’ve seen about a year ago. Even with little to no idea about 40k, I loved every bit of it and understood a majority of what happens in the film. A year later, still a relatively new fan but watching this again still entertains me a lot because of what I understand now. It’s a whole book condensed into a movie that’s easily presentable to new and exciting old 40k fans alike.
I myself was ignorant to any of this story or its characters before I started watching this today. I was immediately drawn in and enjoyed this immensely. No fanboy status required!
One thing that always gets me with this beautiful story is that it really puts into visually perspective the “grim dark” of 40k. This battle is a microcosm of this universe. That last stand at the temple really sets it home. You’d normally see, in Hollywood movies, the group of soldiers getting saved last minute when all hope was lost. Not 40k. No reinforcements, no final daring plan, just death and cold corpses. It really is kinda shock when you are so use to seeing them all come out alive.
Yeah, and there's even the fake out when Jurisian arrives with the Oberon and destoys the Godbreaker, and you'd think they're all going to be saved... but they aren't! I love it!
Well, the serve unto death even in futility flavor of grimdark is on the menu in this film, and in certain contexts of the wider 40k verse. But overall, I find the 'saved at the last minute' trope as alive and well in 40k as any other long running fictional world. How many times in the lore, stretching from the Horus Heresy to the Indomitus Crusade, do we see a protagonist, pilgrimage, platoon or even whole planet surviving and even winning because whichever force shows up, out of the black void or the wild blue to beat off whichever faction is just on the cusp of eating or vanquishing all hope?
In real history, this is usually how human civilization has truly gone. WH40k glorifies the combat with rampage and gore, and tries so fucking hard to be 'edgy as fuck' all the time. Of course, this is why we love it of course. However, it pales in comparison to real human history and the grim darkness that is our past - hell what it still is today...

I was so into it that when I realized it was in color I had to rewind back to when the color started… it was such good storytelling I didn’t even notice…
When battle became close. grimaldus began to see color and everything became crisp and real to him. when battle was over. back to the grays. back to waiting.

That pre-battle speech by Grimaldus. Excellently written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. "Do you see that? Do you see that?! [laughs] Are you all as insulted as I am? _This_ is what they send against us? We stand united in our thousands, our weapons without number, our purity without question, and our hearts beating courage through our blood. And this is how they attack us? Brothers and sisters, a legion of beggars and alien dregs wheezes its way across the plains. Forgive me, when the moment comes, that they whine and weep against our walls. Forgive me that I must order you to waste ammunition upon their worthless bodies. I have heard many souls speak my name in whispers since I came to Helsreach. I ask you now: Do you know me? Do you know me?!" "YES!" "I am Grimaldus of the Black Templars, a brother to the Steel Legion of this defiant world. Never again in life will your actions carry such consequence. Never again will you serve as you serve now. No duty will matter as much and no glory will taste as true. We...are the defenders of Helsreach. On this day, we carve our legend in the flesh of every alien we slay. Will you stand with me?" "YES!" "Sons and daughters of the Imperium, our blood is the blood of heroes and martyrs. The xenos dare defile our city. They dare tread the sacred soil of our world. We will throw their bodies from these walls when the final day dawns. This is _our_ city! This is _our_ world! Say it! Cry it out so the bastards in orbit will hear our fury!" "OUR CITY! OUR WORLD!" "Run, alien dogs! Come to me! Come to us all! Come and die in blood and fire! For the Templars! For the Steel Legion! Truly Epic, one funny thing is when Aaron Dembski Bowden, the author, was asked if there was anything he regrets about his early books he said "Not regret, but since writing books likes Helsreach I'm more aware how many intense monologues have to be taken on by the incredible voice actors." He didn't say he would stop writing such monologues but was more aware of the challenge lol.
Grimaldus is just a gigachad. There are space marines, inquisitors and other people in the Imperium that have a hundred times more authority than he does that would never try half of the stuff this man just does on the daily. And it's not just in the Helsreach novel, basically every account we have of this man from inception to his latest efforts he just gives zero fucks about the Imperial infighting and going through proper channels and just says "Yeah, you're going to do this for me" and the madlad makes them do it every time.

This so filled with great moments, and yet it is true, that is a high point. Another, perhaps five minutes before that..... What event inspires the first faint shade of colour to relieve the black and white and endless grey? The start of the battle, there in the suddenly flushed cheeks and red lensed eyes of Grimaldus. Because at this point in his life, only battle is alive for him. He has so far to go and so many trials to come, but before this film is ended, he will understand where that life came from.
You guys do realize that the dying woman was Andre's fiance, right? The guy with the Russian accent, that got promoted at the end? He gave his partner his ring in an envelope because he thought he was gonna die. She was his girl.
the closing line gives me chills..."as if there is only one" regarding his recognition...one of many, those who came before, those who are and those that will come after...him realising this really makes me feel true respect for him...fighting against all odds, giving it all, asking no quartets and still he's so humble, so level-headed, can't help but admire him...a true hero of the Imperium..
And what is better is his development, he begins the story with outright disgust for mortal men ( he even blankly states it in the book) and ends up respecting humans, to the point of even calling them heroes along himself and his astartes brothers
You know you have achieved greatness when you earn the respect of a Black Templar. The fact that the Guardsmen were willing to give Grimaldus all the glory and credit as Hero of Helsreach shows how much respect the Guard and Astartes gave to each other. When at the end Grimaldus said "As if there were only one" I'm certain he didn't just mean his fallen brother Black Templars, he also meant the Guardsmen and women who served under him.
Didn’t he then go and fight another last stand; against unsurmountable odds to save the last of the salamanders or some other chapter? Who wished to die where their brothers fell. A sentiment Grimaldus held close to his heart; and so he stood with them. And unfortunately survived once more.

I absolutely adore the the slow transition for what seemed like hand drawn slowly into color and animation, and it made me smile alot when i noticed at least part of it was gmod absolutely fantastic work, belongs on the big screen
I remember reading someones great take on it, how the animation gets better as Grimaldus' purpose for being on Armageddon becomes clearer, when the battle begins and continues. Then when he "dies" in the temple district, and it cuts to him boarding the Thunderhawk, the animation is all black and white because he accomplished his purpose and now has nothing, not even his group.
I believe it was all done in Source Film Maker with filters and stuff with adobe after FX, as a guess. If that whole beginning was hand drawn frame by frame than (MIND BLOWN)

How is it possible that this free movie on RU-vid is better than almost any movie being shown in theaters or streaming services right now? And the evolution of the work from black and white stencils to full on dynamic color was so well done I didn't even realize it. Truly a piece of art in all ways one could define art as.
It’s possible because there are no purple-hairs trying to force their ideology on anyone throughout the movie. This is simply turning a book into film. Much like Peter Jackson & co didn’t want to impose their own message on top of Tolkein’s works, the filmmaker here focused on faithfully adapting the source material. Modern Hollywood cannot fathom “simply adapting the source” - they feel compelled to ruin it with “The Message.”
This novel is the epitome of what 40k embodies. the quote "I will die on this world... I will die on Armageddon." hits so hard during the final moments of the last stand.
Its not just the animations we have to give thanks for. The audio sounds of weapon fire, subtle changes to the voices to make them sound helmeted / voxed, the added female voices (which were all well chosen), even sublte footsteps, engines, and ramps coming down. This is real dedication to detail. Plus, shifting some of the scenes around so they better fit a movie format. Well done all around.

I look at the garbage that costs $150 million to make and promote and then I look at what is made just for the love of the 40k universe and I weep for the injustice of it all!
I like to think that the reason the scenes get easier to see as the movie goes on is because black Templar’s only understand battle. That when they’re outside of it, it’s almost as though there is a haze clouding their vision. Battle brings them clarity, and, if my theory is correct, they are able to focus easier in the thick of it. If this is the case, this is an amazing way to communicate that to the audience. It’s a great example of “show-dont-tell” and, again if I’m right, is an amazing way to reveal the lifestyle of a black Templar marine to the audience.
Omg thank you for explaining I'm new to the whole 40k universe so knowing why they chose this animation style is so eye opening and cool to go towards a maybe controversial artistic take.
Astartes in general tend to not understand anything other than War, in fact they don't get Society in general, they don't know what a Feast is, Marriage and Parenthood is alien to them, they don't usually get jokes, ect, with exemptions of a number of them like the Space Wolves and maybe their Chapter Masters, a large number of Astartes just don't get being human at all.
there is even in that one book where a Governor asked 2 Space Marines to join a party, they don't know what a party is so they just stand guard to the point that the guests though they were statues, these are Ultramarines BTW who are known to govern a large part of the Imperium. (yeah Astartes are very slow when it comes to social inter actions but when it comes to their duty be it Warfare or otherwise they excel to a ridiculous degree)
Not just that but there is always the “in 40k there is only war” so it could be a way of saying only the war itself mattered, the build up and the end were inconsequential and not worth remembering
This is the best 40K content... Warhammer content.... I have ever witnessed with my eyes, ears, and heart. I cannot foresee Games Workshop ever producing anything this majestic, as a book is turned so beautifully into a miniseries, and tuned perfectly into a movie. A fan built movie that's able to captivate so much, and with it's creators are so amazingly dedicated. I must watch this again, share it with all who touch the light, in hopes it gets a shout out by Games Workshop and perhaps released to the theatres. Perhaps one day Games Workshop can be inspired by this art and create something worthy of the grounds they've built.
it isn't "fan made" in the truest sense. the author of Helsreach Aaron Dembski-Bowden and the dude who did the cut scene graphics from the mass effect game series teamed up to make this.

Yes, i think he is one of the most "human" and likeble charachters. Generally guardsmen connect to our normal life more than SM. That being said about andrej's story, it is the way of 40k in general; a post-modern semi-realistic sci-fi which is tragic but also beatiful and well written. Most of the horus heresy novels are also like that, lots of the charachters die at the end. They are sort of a honored-martyrs of the god-emperor, as we see at the end here as well. Glorious stuff!
I just noticed that at 2:24:14 they show how Priamus lost his arm as it is hardly seen after he got set on fire later on. Truly a masterpiece. So many small details...
Puts Ultramarines to shame, never tire of watching this, the music score, the actors, must have watched this over 10 times, masterpiece is an overused word, not in this case!
I've been a Space Marine fan since they came to the states (yes I'm a bit aged). This hit me in the feels as it was the most 40k thing I've ever seen. Bravo.
@@captainfry245 it was the woman he was serving with she died in one of the scenes. also there literally the last 6 survivors of the battle of hellreach
"If I am interrupted again, I will kill one of you." Grimaldus is a beast. He's like "anyone of your lives will suffice for my annoyance." Sick with it.
I love this little deatil at 2:03:35 Primus, in just the previous scene, had bowed to a man he didn't need to out of respect for his skill with a blade and his position. The very next scene, primus refuses to kneel at the Sister of Battle because he doesn't recognize her prowess or skill. Grimaldus also doesn't bow, because he knows he outranks her within the rankings of the God Emporer's Ecclesiarchy
ive watched this several times in the last few years. It wasnt until lastnight, that I read a comment that made me think/realize this wouldn t be what it is without the voice actors. You made it truely great. Thank you very much.
Truly a great, gripping experience portrayed beautifully in the eyes of both the writer and the artist. I will watch this a million times before death takes me. Thank you Brothers
I agree with you as well the hundred who like this video but please don't die without getting right with our Creator through His Son Jesus the LORD and Savior.
I'll be honest, coming into this movie straight from Astartes and Vraks, and right into one masterpiece that should be preserved for all time, I am getting chills over my body as the movie progresses. The detailing improving constantly, The voice acting, the SFX. EVERYTHING. I am in tears this is such a good movie. AND THESE ARE MADE BY FANS!!!!! If you watch any WH40K video, make it this one.
This is just outstanding. I wasn't initially a fan of the animation style, but by the end I came to realize just how fitting it was to the overall aesthetic. Very few animations I've seen have so well captured the "feel" of the subject matter. Granted, I'm an Ork fan, but still, this was just superbly well done.
The legend of these marines shall be know forever . It is sad that one marine must watch all his brothers die in one battle but shall rember them forever
Broke down in tears hearing "You are the last Emperor's Champion of the Hellsreach Crusade, Now Recover your Blade..." As a Black Templar this was epic.
Grimaldus bringing back a Princeps Majoris from the mind impulse landscape of a Imperator class bipedal assault titan is the kind of legendary feats usually attributed to Legionaries and the greatest ofnall known Astartes of the great crusade. This feat and this feat alone marks Marek Grimaldus out as one of the greatest Astartes to have ever taken up the heraldic cross to commit to the Eternal Crusade. He sees the heart of people as a navigator sees the sacred fire and light of the Astronomican. A firm guiding light yet not a sure road to the final destination. The remark "You have beautyfull eyes" and his calm, respectfull, silent manner that he accepts it shows such a deep feeling and understanding. Everything else is the human inside of him. Just a warm yet so well held back humanity. He is unique in the lore of 40K. Almost as unique as anny Primarch.
I especially liked that both humans who saw him without the helm said he has beautiful/kind eyes. It's a really nice sentiment, that under the skeletal helm of a huge, death-bringing angel there is still a man, who can still relate to humanity.
The orcs had to kill StormHerald in the most uncivilised and brutal way... Laying filthy claws upon a god engine. Insult to the injury. Beheading is pretty effective like that.
absolutely amazing film, doing the emperors work! one moment I want to comment on is 23:53. it really made me reflect on the power of Guilliman. These are the realities of running a sustainable war effort and it took 9 days to break it all down for 1 city. imagine running that for a whole world, for a system, for an entire crusade? the fury of dorn is amazing but I have definitely been sleeping on the power of administration
Setting aside the fact that Guilliman is a Primarch and would have had the entire forces of the Ultramarines and successor chapters behind him, I do believe that Guilliman would have been able to prepare the entire Hive city for war in mere hours. "If you do what I say, how I say it, when I say it, it will be plenty time". Grimaldis is a leader. An Astartes of legend. But he is no logistician nor a strategical leader. He is woefully inadequate to save the city without sustaining the extreme losses that they did. A full Titan. An Imperator Titan.. which if utilized well probably could have won them the war of Hellsreach.. and destroyed the Orc Titan (I don't know what they are called) with "ease". Comparing a Astartes to a Primarch is like comparing a human to a Custodes. There is no way to live up to the same expectations. So naturally it is not intended to diminish Grimaldis. He still survived all this without even a hint of thought to flee. He fully intended to die alongside his brothers. I do believe Hellsreach did have a chance. It would "just" take a Demi-God to actually do it. Or a full Company of Imperial Fists (the whole Chapter probably would have made it easy). As far as strategical and logistical planning, the war of Hellsreach would have been "easy" for Guilliman. The man wins wars. If he had been present himself as well, the Warboss would have been dead before even wettening his Choppa or firing his Dakka.
A true masterpiece of film. I personally suffer from autism and ADHD, which can make it very hard to pay attention or watch lengthy pieces like this to completion. With that in mind, I want it known that there was not one second during this 2 and a half hour masterpiece where I thought about doing something else. If I ever had the pleasure and honour of meeting the peoples that made this film, I would shake their hand. I would thank them. I would cry. And plead for more. I bid you all stay strong and be well in these strange and trying times, brothers. We will always have each other to hold us to our finest calibre. The Emperor protects us all.
This has to be straight up the best and most powerful film making I’ve watched in a long time. I got into 40K when I was still a kid having played the dark crusade and then started collecting the tabletop stuff. I burnt out of it for a long time but with my tv broken and only a computer I returned to the first dawn of war game after many years I got caught up watching lore then this auto played and I was blown away. I may be several years late but this has literally made me fall in love with 40K all over again with a harder passion than ever before.
I feel you brother. Also was introduced a bit into 40k back in 2004 with dow1 but got into the lore 2011 with dow2 retribution. Its like this IP is old and is from 80s but for us it never gets old. In fact atm i am capturing the whole Dow1+Dow2 playthroughs. Glad you liked it and tnx for the compliments!
@@RostamArchives literally just finished DOW 20 minutes ago about to run through winter assault for my first playthrough doing order first then disorder
This was an absolute work of art. Incredible voice acting... Artful animation... It has it all. Whoever was involved in putting this together is a hero... As if there were only one.
Thank you to every artist that helped make this masterpiece!😢 sooo sick I just got into 40k reading/learning and I appreciate everything all of you do!
Am I missing something? How has this only got 443,600 views!? (at the time of me watching it) This is one of the best Warhammer animations I've ever seen!! Fan or professional. And it's feature length!!!! Stunning animation in multiple styles, brilliant voice acting, sound and music. Astartes is a work of art, but it consists of multiple, very brief chapters. How is this so under viewed? Am I missing something??
This is copied. When it first came out, the story was spread over 12 chapters...it took 18mos iirc. The waiting for each to drop was tough. Be happy that you get to experience it in 1 film.
@Eric Huckaby how can I be a cuck if I bang yer mom? Since we're on the topic, I want something nice for Father's day...no, I don't want another macaroni "art project" that you made at Re Re camp.
47:30 is my favorite part of this wonderful rendition. Its so amazing how the city defends with thousands of ANTI AIR. Also how the imperium is forced to fall back from the billions of orcs approaching. Amazing.
