The most terrifying part for this was when one of the cultists looked out a window and into the warp. There are demons and warp entities crawling all over the hull of the ship. It's like they're in a submarine diving into the depths of an ocean inside hell.
Yeah that got me too, but it's also what sucked me in. That's exactly how lore describes the warp. Bad, BAD shit. And in this case there's a truce of sorts, imagine if this were a loyalist ship with no Gellar field, and no protection from the "gods" GW needs to step back from taming and humanizing it. The Immaterium is populated and ruled by malevolent, near-unknowable entities and their servants existing beyond any conception of natural law or order. _This_ is what it's like
@@jakeg3733 Even Chaos/Traitor ships use Gellar fields, and it's heavily implied that deeper into the Warp, there are beings even older and more powerful than the Chaos "Gods".
*1. corpses on the outside of the ship are stuck there due to astartes magboots, giving a glimpse of the previous boarding assault fight on the hull.* *2. marines in floors and walls are due to either a blind, rushed, or warp interferenced teleport assault attempt.* -both of these make it seems like the fight was a last ditch effort assault just so they could potentially get a few men on board to sabotage or to break out and warn the next planet where ever they exit the warp from. *3. blipping demons, old school bloodletter, and mutated mother/child are because there is no gellar field on while they're warp traveling (makes sense given they're wordbearers)* *4. dark mechanicus guy says there's an intruder messing around with the ship: either a surviving ultramarine or maybe that nightlord astartes perched over the pit (could be loyalist).* -more than likely the first since the guy in the cell asks the ultramarine if he's recovered after he finds out they're close to the next planet/about to exit warp, as if ready to spring their own plan. *5. torso ultramarine over pit is probably the captured captain from part 2 that welcomed wordbearers onto planet; now being forced to watch his captured brothers fight/die in the pit.* -he has his imperial laurel nailed to his head, probably in mockery , and the ultramarine in the pit is wearing his while fighting with two "Macragge" ultramarine signature axes *6. normal guy in cell is probably a captured ultramarine initiate based on his shoulder armor and dialogue with the world eater; "aspire to become one with the 13th legion".* - also says he doesn't need to be modified to go toe to toe with the world eater, referring to either the gene seed needed to become an astartes or the butchers nails. *7. same guy recognizes the ultramarine walking with the wordbearers and is in disbelief; astarte in next cell tells him its a wordbearer that's just wearing his armor; "a lie".* -at the end, you can see both the imprisoned astartes armor being worn by the wordbears and Nakal, as shells that they will "march onto the streets of neighboring worlds" MK1 Terminator and gal vorbak were a great touch as well. Phenomenal animation: liked and subscribed.
"I'm no animator and I absolutely HATE doing it", and YET this is 1000x better than the film production studio made Ultramarines movie. This is amazing!
A testament to Mark's devotion, but also shows how far computers have come in the last decade or so that this level of work can now be achieved by one person in his bedroom!
@@choromancer7045 Animation is alright. From a professional standpoint its jittery and lacks refinement; obviously lots of mocap used. In my opinion the animation is the only thing worthy of serious critique.

I really love that you don't shy away from the more gruesome aspects of 40k. I feel like you're the only animator that could get the Dark Eldar down right
@CanadianDoomer and yet both Slaanesh and the Dark eldar are toned down in media. Which sucks cause I like dark things to balance put the factions like the Space Wolves and other more nobler factions
I like seeing the Mechanicus. I always wondered what they looked like besides videogames. Look metal as hell. I could never imagine completely modifying myself to be barely human. Guess living forever is a good perk though.
Psychopaths don't believe that they've done anything wrong. A person that disfigured by the warp should have ended their lives long before. Now she is tainted, knows it, knows the threat she is to everyone around her, yet still believes she isn't the one cursed. Her love for the child outweighs her love for the Emperor, with whom she only calls out to in order to save the baby, knowing full well that the abomination should have been smothered and cleansed in fire when it was birthed. She would forsake the Emperor the moment she found someone or something that would give her hope to save the child.
@@brainplay8060 The Horrifying thing is that you are right. Death would be a gift and a loving mercy to such warp tainted beings. 200% more what I picture the 40k setting looks like over what has generally been being put out these days. What an incredible fan project. I'd love to see more.
Astartes, Helsreach, Death of Hope... Animators in this community have stepped their game up so high that I honestly doubt GW can even catch up. Look at this, that mother scene and the ritual going about nearby her alone was more brutal and grimdark than half of this setting. Demons from warp flickering in and out, Hereteks roaming about, Marines that actually look as scary as they are supposed to be, good representation of the animosity people have against each other in the setting, and for once Chaos is actually the ultra fucked up universal terror it is rather than a Saturday night cartoon villain. Thank you, this 20 minute glimpse into the grimdark represents how it is supposed to be far better than it's creator does.
I loved the fact that chaos is not only depicted as the horror it actually is... But not fascinatingly either. Is THE chaos, the pure, anedultoreted evil that broke the spine of the Dream the Imperium was supposed to mean.

I watched this again 3 years later and I think the amount of effort that went into this should not be underscored. Someone was trying to share their vision of something. I appreciate it.
"Brother! There's Ultramarines roaming freely on board." "Describe his armour, brother." "Uhh. Ultramarine mohawk with studs on right shoulder?" "Actually, brother, I think that's Brother Tal from our Legion." "What about the one with lightening marks on his chest?" "I think he's also one of ours?" "Make them wear name tapes. I almost tore his head off."
@Imperial Judesmen138 while watching this for some reason the hairs on the back of the head started to tingle and i felt an urge of PURGING all the way damn.
The reason heretics are turning worlds to Chaos is that people living on Imperium worlds are poor, miserable and believe they have nothing to lose. They are wrong, of course, they will lose their bodies and souls, but they are not very imaginative...
How GW saw this and didnt immediately say "this guy, this guy has more heart and talent than the entire production department at Warhammer TV, hire him and give him what he needs to make a full production immediately" is beyond me.
Dude as a 30k Word Bearer player, I watch these every chance i can get...they help motivate me to paint and enjoy the hobby. How you animated them, voiced them, is exactly how I imagined them when hearing/reading their lore. Regardless what anyone says, these are the most hardcore and badass videos I've watched. The perfect amount of grimdark....just wonderful...an artist is supposed to project their vision, the viewer is suppose to stand in awe of the creativity. I stand in awe of the art and dedication for these animations...I do wish you'd continue making them....but this is your creation. I wish GW would realise its thanks to the creative minds like yours that created free marketing for them instead of what they're doing now. Anyway, dude, you're the best. I'd be happy if you do a word bearers movie for just me lol. If i had unlimited money, i'd hire you to animate just for me Word bearer lore....sadly.....i'm a broke blue collar man...
They got a, relatively speaking, minor scolding. A finger wagging. A slap on the wrist. A bit of an ego nipple twister. What did they do? Turn to Chaos. They have the least amount of "good reason" to turn, yet they are the most awful of all the legions that turned to Chaos. I simply find it extremely difficult to ever sympathize with them as a legion. They have the weakest minded, willed and even physically speaking Primarch. Ultramarines did nothing wrong. If anything they didn't do a thorough enough job.
@@Catonzo Word Bearers are the most important legion in the Heresy, they were the first traitors, they (Lorgar, Erebus, Kor Phaeron etc.) started it all! And they really have some depth ..
Hello from the Warhammer fan from Russia. It is absolutely stunning. What I especially appreciate is the way you managed to show the Chaos, its true horrifying nature. The problem about books or "encyclopedia-type" videos is that none of them could give the real undestanding of all those hellish horrors that hide behind this word, "Chaos". You absolutely DID IT. All this hopeless atmosphere and whole material feed give an opportunity to feel like I am right there, on that ship, and that feeling creeps me out. Great job done on details, every single rust stain is alive and the darkness of that world is seen in every minute. I hope I made myself clear to understand, thank you so much! Hoping to see the complete story.
it would be great to platform his work on your channel, Luetin; your reach and overall quality of work, would go a long way in getting Mark some recognition for his work and give him some exposure. That's one side of it, the other being that I (and many others, I'm sure) would very much enjoy your reaction to it and having you dissect and analyze it.
How can anyone hate this? Even I don't play 40k see this as an amazing work of art. Truly GRIM and DARK as the people of 40k like to say. Good luck to the rest of your endeavors. You 100% have talent!

And that baby scene... ugh... Almost as heartbreaking as that scene in Mother! From the bottom of my heart, bravo and fuck that!
I have to comment again because I just found out that this series was cancelled. I understand how the weight of negativity and comparisons brought you so far down. I hope someday that you feel well enough to pick this back up because it is truly a work of art. I bet the comparisons to Astartes left a bitter taste in your mouth but I have to add just one more that I hope you read as a positive take. Astartes is a demonstration of ruthless efficiency- soldiers seeing their mission through to the end. Death of Hope is a snapshot of the soul-crushing reality that these people live in. Both are deep dives into lore and are obvious passion projects made with incredible amounts of love for the game(?) I love that the approaches are so different and it sets an astonishingly high bar for anything that follows. I haven't watched part 2 yet but I already know that I'm going to be entertained, scared, impressed, and then sad that there isn't a 3rd in the trilogy. Thanks for doing this
Been a long time fan of this project. When frends, family and coworkers ask if Im into horror, I tell them Im more into Grimdark and Cosmic Horror. Not the trifling, popular things they are exposed to. A few of them I have shown this animation as to non-verbally explain what I mean, and they all shudder at the knowledge as to why I think their interests in "horror" is mundane. My mind, and the minds of those who are fans of this universe we call Warhammer are on a whole other level than mainstream "horror". And I remind them of that fact every time they want to watch some Hollywood bs with me.
@@adrianpomarancza4348 Nah, a couple witches linked to the Astropath chairs will do the trick too. And since this is 30k, all the daemons know not to fuck with the traitor marines unless they want to get their ass whooped by their patron gods.
“In the grim darkness of the far future there is only the Death of Hope.” Mark, this is a truly stunning piece of art you have lovingly crafted here. Your tireless adherence to exquisite detail and in-universe authenticity is without peer and sets a new bar of animated story telling in the universe of the Horus Heresy and wider Warhammer 40,000. Never before have I seen these stories and art brought to life with such power and utterly uncompromising and brilliant clarity. Your Astartes and Mechanicum are how I imagine them in the minds of the Black Library authors and of course, the late great Alan Bligh. The depictions of the neverborn daemons are inspired and connect to the deepest, darkest lore of 40K and took me vividly back to the Realm of Chaos books Slaves to Darkness and Lost And The Damned. I offer my heartfelt appreciation and most admiring compliments to you and those who contributed towards the incredible creation the is “Death of Hope”. It is a grimdark masterpiece! A final personal note. I cannot find the words right now to express how completely overwhelmed and honoured I am to see you mention my humble content in your dedication. Imagination is perhaps the greatest of gifts to give and to see you say so is a moment I will always treasure and remember. Thank you Mark.
That was beautiful. And well deserved, the honour and respect that travelled in both directions between the two of you. You are both paragons of the Horus Heresy fan world, and as creators of original content yourselves, have both contributed immeasurably to my own personal enjoyment of it- and I’m also honoured to have corresponded with both of you, however briefly, through your channels. As high as the regard is in which I hold the both of you, I’m always blown away by how down to earth and accessible you guys are. It speaks to your character, mainly- that you’re both willing to share thoughts and ideas with those of us who are not as talented or knowledgeable as you guys, but love the grimdark, amazing world that Bligh and company have given to us to enjoy, with the same devotion and passion. This was an amazing piece of work, and something that I’ll watch countless times (as I did with the prologue) until part 2 premieres. I have been waiting for this for so long, but I have to say, that it was more than worth the wait. Just incredible, Mark. And I got such a great feeling when I saw that dedication at the end, and recognized the banner and models before even hearing Leaky’s voice- I just thought- how incredibly appropriate, and fitting. Anyway- thanks for all of the thousands of hours of work that obviously went into the production of what Leakycheese rightly named a “masterpiece.” This is a one of a kind - and will have a place of honour in the lore and works of the Heresy that we all know and love.

Guys, there are other 40k animations that are nice, especially Astartes, but this one... Damn, here we find the madness of encapsulated heresy, the violence and horror of the warp spread throughout the material universe, in such an unhealthy way... it's perfect. Visually as well as in the atmosphere, it's exactly as I saw Horus' Heresy... Mark, you point out that the animations are perfectible, ok, but the amount of work you had to put in to get this result transpires..., the details of the environments, the armors, the characters, damn it's huge! Get some rest man, because you deserve it, you've just delivered the best visual representation of Horus' Heresy (and even 40k I dare say) we've ever seen. Thank you, and Bravo.
2024 here again. This still is the top of the top showing how grim, how dark, this universe is. Other fan made pieces may be more incredibly polished, this is the real feel.
I find it funny that the whole twitchy monster thing comes from Jacob's Ladder, which was a major inspiration for Silent Hill 3. A lot of the visual shorthand in this film was nicked off other pop culture influences.
@Zoomer Waffen Cope my dude. You do realize the film isn't canon, right? I don't think it's bad for the film to take inspiration from other sources. Hell, there barely is even a canon in 40K anymore because it's been changed so much over the years. 40K started out as a giant meme fest of British cultural references. No, no, the Orks aren't soccer hooligans and the Arbites totally aren't Dredd knock-offs. You're taking the franchise way more seriously than it needs to be.
@@JiGCop her closeness to the chuld, and it to her, according to the author. Memories of being connected in the womb, perhaps? Either way the warp manifested those feelings.

Whats so amazing about this is how the creator has made marines into being actually really f**king scary. Even the ultramarines look scary. It really captures this sense in the books of transhuman dread. That these beings are so ascended beyond a normal human, that people are like insects. There is many comparisons I read between this and astartes. I like everyone else enjoy astartes, its very polished. But Death of Hope OOZES atmosphere, the world it creates is such an authentic representation of the grim wh world. Normally I dont like too much deviation from 'normal' space marine appearance. But the detail in DoH, its really awe inspiring. I love the art so much, but something worries me, surely only one touched by the warp could produce such dire majesty. Summon the Inquisition!
This is an excellent point. This does at least attempt to convey transhuman terror and an uncartoonish grim dark asthetic. Makes one realise how watered down the supposed grim dark is by comparison.
Most of the the canon media doesn’t quite grasp that lore-correct Space Marines are so heavily engineered that they’re barely human anymore. This guy gets it.

Because nu-Warhammer under the current GW wants to make everything heroic and noblebright again, and that gives out a certain perception to newcomers. Also are the newcomers demanding for more brightness and hope.
To be fair there needs to be a rise before there can be a fall, that's tragedy 101. 40k wouldn't be tragic without the highs of the Dark Age of Technology, and basically everything that happened while the Emperor wasn't stuck on his throne. I can understand why narratively, they would want a rise again before another fall. It just needs to not be contrived
@Tharr Mortus Thousand Sonds is one of my favorite HH books at all, because despite been the ol'self-fulfilled-prophecy with the classic tragic twist. you can still relate to everything that happens, specially if you are a person who consider knowledge one of the most relevant and important traits. Without spoiling you how the novel ends, I would consider that "Thousand Sonds" won't be the moment that Magnus fall, rather I would say it´s just one more stepping stone. Nowadays I'm in Mark of Calth. This quarantine has helped me read at least 10 books in a few months. You won't regret it.
This was amazing... I'm really speachless... the atmosphere, the ambient... I really dig your representation of chaos, space marines and the world. That's exactly what I'd expect from warhammer world.
I don't think anyone has acknowledged the scene with the girl and her baby being the same girl and baby that ran past the ultra marines in death of hope trailer 2, this is what chaos did to her when they took her prisoner and that little continuance and detail is what really makes these videos so special mark.

wow dude this was one of the coolest things ever. I felt like I could see the Emperors dream dying in front of me with how twisted the Traitor space marine's had become. And the Lovecraftian elements to how a Word Bearers ship is a totally messed up place where the warp bleeds through was done perfectly. This is so loyal to the Horus Heresy Books it is amazing, I always knew the Word Bearers were messed up and their ships were nasty but holy god-Emperor! this is what 30k/40k should be, grimdark to the core. This was awesome!!
I still think this is one of the best if not the best animation and depiction of what 30/40k is It shows the grimdark feel that most dont, something we saw alot of in art especially in years past. I seem to remember when this came out some small group of people were saying "its too much" and moaning about it and its like Oh you dont know what 30/40k is do you. Again great stuff bud :-)
However hard I tried imagining Warhammer, the full weight of the images eluded me until now. This was what my mind was trying and failing to conjure. By the Emperor's light, we need more! P.S. You're an inspiration.
