Cloth Napkins: how to sew with no pinning: Make these attractive buttoning napkins with a built-in napkin loop and enjoy fabric dinner napkins affordable for every day. They are generously sized and make great gifts. Step-by-step instructions allow novice sewers to see the entire process; the well-initiated can use the time cues below to jump to points of interest. Nothing wrong with a short intro, although I find the trend for screeching 'Hi guys' at the beginning of each video very annoying! In this video the music makes it difficult for me to understand what she is saying.

This is really cool. I'm a guy that is starting to sew items for myself 30 years after middle school home-ec classes. This is a really good tutorial. I started making my own shirts because I went to Macy's and bought a shirt that I paid a lot of money for. After it was laundered the first time I went to press it and the thread melted. By the time I got the temperature high enough to press the fabric of the shirt, the thread melted. I started making my own cotton shirts for work and they've lasted longer, and brought my blood pressure down because I get the chance to make something useful. I can't do woodwork because I don't have the room. Working with the machine and fabrics is just like building something because of the thought power needed.

Men doing woodwork is over-rated and overdone! There are many fashion designers who are or were men, so i see nothing wrong with a man sewing! If your (future) spouse doesn't appreciate it, it's their loss ;)

Oh my gosh....THANK YOU for washing and ironing your fabric before working with it!!!!! So many people on RU-vid don't do that, and it's such poor technique! My thought is this: if you're going to spend the money and take the time to make something nice, then take the time to wash and iron your fabric so that your project turns out even nicer! Your napkins are just beautiful! I like the fabric and your technique! I had not seen this mitered corner technique before, and will give it a try. I need to be able to do corners more quickly, and this would enable me to do so. Now....I'd better go make some napkins!

SUPER! These will be a perfect gift for my adult kids who have all given up paper napkins, paper towels, plastic food storage etc., and have gone back to more enviroment friendly not to mention less expensive "old" ways! My daughters-in-law complain they can't find ready-made cloth napkins that appeal to them in design or color. Thank you for this great simple but elegant homemade napkin pattern tutorial!! The buttons are a charming and functional touch as well!

I love how confident and how comfortable you are with your sewing process. In addition to that I love the steps that you take including pre-washing the fabric, and the button with loop for closing the folded napkin into the roll. Thank you for sharing really good ideas!

other tutorials they make templates, and measure and mark the fabric with pens, and you just go for it and mitre the corners as you go. So much quicker and easier, and your napkins are beautiful. Thankyou, love your tutorials

This tutorial is absolutely fantastic. I checked others that had you mark and pin and cut off corners and line up marks and sew along lines . . . . too much work. This was super easy and FAST and turned out beautiful. Thanks for posting!!

Love, Love, Love your "old school" take on these. The button closure is genius! The mitered corner is masterful! And I agree, prior to a project there's no substitution for washing and ironing fabric just like it will be used later. I have to have one of those handles for my ruler, too.

Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful tutorial. This is the first I’ve seen of yours and look forward to more. What I’ve done in the past for myself was that when I purchased a tablecloth on sale , I bought another in the largest size and divided it up to get the most generous size napkins. It may not have been the most creative or pretty method but it was an economical one. I can’t wait to try your method or to try a bias tape maker. Like others who have commented, I think you’re an excellent teacher and I really enjoy watching and listening to your technique. 😊🇨🇦

Hi Zazu,where have you been all my life,you are so down to earth and so pratical,you just get on with the job , have had to downsize from a large house to a very cute Villa in a retirement village,i now have a studio as big as a Bathroom (a small one),i am in a wheelchair and boy what a challenge,i love how you have used all of your space,my sewing room is in my Bedroom,i have very large Built in Wardrobes so i am utilising them,once again i love your practical advice,did you learn at A Sewing School,here in Australia we Had T.A.F.E. But you guessed it Goverment decided it was a Ladies Craft along with Cake Decorating.I am so grateful i found you and i am impressed by one so young and Talented. I watched this video several years ago and was SO impressed with the results that I went out and bought and cut all kinds of fabric to make gifts. Well, something happened (who knows what 🤷‍♀️) and they never got made. In cleaning out my sewing room, I recently discovered piles of the cut fabric and knew right then that THIS is the year that these are getting made. So, I came back to watch the video again; it was just as delightful today. Thank you! 💕

Totally agree: Your tutorial is SUPERB, CLEAR, and "to-the-point!" Also appreciate the old-school approach! I continue to sew (albeit not well) from 7th Grade "Home Economics" -- OMG! I'm 78 now, so you see, these lessons remain with you for a lifetime! Tell the name of your special "foot" for doing the binding tapes! Love this! Also like your machine! Love this video! I had to grin when you talked about washing the fabric first! My mother always sewed, and in junior high and made me this beautiful dotted Swiss blouse to go with my straight white skirt that she had also made. It had banded cuffs with lace on each side, stand up collar with lace, and lace down the front tab with the buttonholes. I thought it was one of the most beautiful blouses my mother had made me. A lot of work in that shirt! I wore my supremely cute outfit to school, you couldn’t wear pants when I went to school, and then my blouse got washed… Never to be worn again as the fabric had shrunk so much there was no way to wear it... I felt so sad for my mother because I know there was a LOT of time put into that blouse and I loved it, it was so cute. That was mine and my mother’s learning lesson, always get the fabric wet and dry it before cutting it out. I think that was eighth grade and I’m 65 now 😊 my mom and I still reference the navy white dotted Swiss blouse lol! Sorry this is kind of long, but I love the video on the napkins, my husband always likes cloth napkins and that’s what we use! I couldn’t figure out why you were going to make a loop on a napkin, but after watching the video I really like it! I’ve saved it and subscribed, after Christmas… I think I will make some napkins with loops and dig into my button box! Thanks for sharing, hope you all have a Merry Christmas 🎄

I am so glad that I decided to take home ec. instead of second foreign language in grade 7. We sewed a garment and were told to wash and iron the fabric before cutting the pattern pieces to have it pre shrunk. It was a saver of work and tears for sure.

I saved this video at least a couple of years ago, as I love making cloth napkins but always had trouble with the corners, so I kind of gave up on them! My machine just wouldn't do those regular corners - it would get hung up, my thread would bunch, etc. Today, in Sept. 2020 I just tried this method and WOW it works great! I love it and is so easy (once you practice a few times!) and no more sewing machine getting hung up on every corner! Now I can go back to making cloth napkins... I love giving them as gifts. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just subscribed!

Thank you so very much for this video! We lost everything in the Camp fire of 11/08/2018, have just found a piece of property there (Paradise) and are getting ready to move back HOME. We lost all my fabric, my buttons given to me by my Gma and my Mom and the ones I've collected for almost s70 yrs. My Gma and my own sewing machines. I'm just now getting back into sewing and this was like sitting down with my Gramma and my Mom (both have passed) to learn from them. I can't tell you the gratitude I feel....I'll be able to make new napkins (special, with a button and loop!) for our new home. Hoping to be "home" by Thanksgiving! These were the first napkins that I have ever made and so much easier than all the other tutorials that I watched on making napkins. Your mitered corners are much less complicated than all the others...once you figure it out. If I go too long between making them, I always refer back to watch how to do it. I like this a lot. My husband and I find ourselves using cloth napkins now and are eating meals at the table in our new home. Never did that in over 30 years at the old house! I found this at the right time. Great instructions. Love the button idea. These would make awesome gifts as you say! TFS!

I truly enjoyed this tutorial, probably the best of all I've seen so far: you don't waste time with ums and uhs, you speed up the process, which helps a lot!! My only problem, and this is common for me, is the background music when you are speaking is loud to me, but I'm ADD, so I have a hard time focusing on things with much background. You were easy and I felt like I could actually DO this project! Thank you!

I was searching for an easy way to miter corners on napkins with a quarter inch fold. I had some left over material and I could only get 16 1/4” square so the fold had to be small. I tried other ways I found and they were too easy to mess up. Your method worked perfect and it wasn’t that hard with such a tiny fold. I plan to make more napkins like the ones in your video, they are wonderful. Thank you so much, you saved my sanity!

I have decided to teach myself sewing and have tried a few projects so far. Some were success and some were not lol I really wanted to try these, so I took my time and walked through it slowly. Took me 2 days, but they're done! I made some minor mistakes, mostly the kind that you won't notice unless you know they're there, but I am so happy with them! Sarah, happy for you. That’s how you learn and improve by making mistakes and redoing certain stitches. Best way to learn, do it and do it over again. Best of luck and good for you for teaching yourself. That’s pretty much how I learned. I have taken a few courses, which I must say, is another great way of learning various tips and new methods. That’s one thing about sewing, you always, always learn new things,and will do so as long as I continue sewing. :)

Very Nice! I love making and giving napkins as gifts too. We have always used cloth napkins. I save my fancies for formal affairs, but use highly patterned ones daily. That way I don't worry about the spaghetti or BBQ sauces staining them. Thank you for this tutorial. It's a nice mitered corner.

+Lyn Hoeft Thank you for this great comment. We remain committed to using cloth napkins at our house too. I folded the everyday basket after the wash for the first 18 years and then was ready to start using paper. My husband said he would take a shift and has been doing it for 8 years now! He won't let me throw even one of them away, even when the fabric is threadbare all down the hems. He says they are a piece of history! Happy sewing!

A friend of mines mother just asked me to make her some napkins and now I can make some with an extra flare. Thank you. Just one question. Is there any particular material or weight of material that works best?

I have mostly used 100% cotton quilting fabric. Some slightly heavier 100% cottons from the home dec section have worked great too. I avoid polyester, even blends. They aren't as absorbent, no matter how pretty they look or how nice they feel. Good luck. Please let me know how it goes. Thanks!

What fabrics do you recommend for napkins? I have limited resources here and quilters cotton is the most common available. I feel that is too thin

+Sheri Sterling Yes, this can be a real problem if you aren't comfortable with quilting fabric for these. You might be able to find something in home dec or even in clearance....I would stick with 100% cotton for absorption and softness. I can tell you that I never had negative feedback with all the napkins I sold over a span of at least a dozen years. Two people (who did not purchase them) said they didn't like the napkins being one-sided prints. I also never used a fabric that came out too wrinkled and sorry from the dryer during pre-washing. At home we use our large assortment of cotton napkins until they are going threadbare, which takes many, many washings. Good luck!!

Thank you for this very informative tutorial, Zazu. You've made me aware of a few gadgets I hadn't seen before (I am more or less a beginner :-)). Did you purchase the ruler with the handle or was it added separately? I've looked on Amazon but they don't have this type of handle.

While I love the beauty and simplicity of these napkins, I am not a fan of the loop and button - not in looks or practicality. (Just personal preference, no judgement on whether they should be on napkins or not.) So I will simply leave them off and make basic, beautiful napkins with some nice mitered corners. These look easy and fun.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Most of the napkins I have at home are buttonless, but the ones I sold as part of a line of coordinates really needed the button to justify the price ($4.50 to $5.00 each) and to set them apart from any old napkin. I have admitted before that it wasn’t for everyone. The real significance of the video is the easy and speedy corner...

Your tutorial is great, but for me the music is distracting and takes away from what you are trying to get across. Music is ok when there is no speaking, but when the speaking comes on, for me, the music should be muted. I think anyone with a hearing loss might agree with me.

I certainly agree, but alas, it is too late to change this video. I have been trying to make the music less obtrusive with newer videos. This is one of my earliest offerings. Sorry it isn't perfect.

Background music way to loud for sensitive ears like mine. It's very distracting. I found myself listening to the music rather than you. MISSED a lot had to go back a few times. SORRY.
