Starting to sew again after 35 year 🤷‍♀️ break, I needed a beginner project to re-learn how to use a sewing machine and make something recognizable. This was a perfect tutorial and Patty is the perfect teacher to get me re-started. ❤

I love making my napkins like this and do them all this way now. I can do the mitered corners, but it's so fussy and I think this method looks very nice. It's all in pressing properly and getting your edges square.

You should look up my pillowcase project next and try that!! I have a simple zippered bag project you might enjoy as well, but start with the pillowcase. Oh and I have some strip pieced placemats that are super easy and look fantastic you will probably enjoy.

I thought these were really fun to make and incorporating a little chained sewing lets us make several pieces quickly and easily. I'm so happy you remember the trees from last year! I love napkins and placemats and have many more to come.

A tip from a pro sewer. Get a Hot Hemmer, made by several companies, to fold your hems. It grabs your fabric and can be ironed on. I took some fusing material and laid two end to end and fused them to make mine longer. Then when I want shorter fabric hemmed I just fold it to the shorter size. Hard to explain. But works much better and faster than the hem gauge used here. Hope this helps. I do not sell or have anything to do with the companies that make these. I just love this tool. Saves me so much time ad I am more accurate.

Just found you as want to make napkins. I also have material to sew a ‘quilt’well a front back and batting for grandson. And my granddaughter a panel with 3 borders and a binding,eeek! So glad to be able to go back and watch! Thanks for easy but well explained video!

Thank you Cindy!! I love this napkin project. I've done the mitered corners but I prefer this. It's much easier to get them sewn and I think it looks really nice on the table. I'm using some now! I do have a fairly in depth series on putting on borders and right now I'm editing about making quilt sandwiches at home. Then I'll show you my binding method which I think is LOADS easier than what is generally shown. I hope you enjoy them and that they help you!

Patty, just love the simplicity and class of these napkins. Your "think- aloud" voiceover teaches more than the steps involved in making a napkin. You are encouraging us to plan, prepare, be accurate, and incorporate suggested tips and techniques that will create successful future sewing projects, as well. Another great tutorial video Patty!...Cloth napkins are a nice gift idea...what is your opinion on prewash or no prewash for these napkins?...

Thanks LuAnn! In real life, you could certainly prewash in real life, but for photography and videos I generally work with unwashed fabric. It's easier to handle and looks more vibrant in pictures. I will use these in food photos so I won't wash them until I need them washed from crumbs or frosting.

Hi. This was a great tutorial and tried it tonight. I am having trouble with my machine stalling at the beginning and end of the second round of hemming when all the fabric is folded up on each other at the corners. My machine can’t manage all those layers. Any tips? Thanks.

It IS a LOT of layers. You might try putting a fresh machine needle into the machine and try again. Sometimes the needle is dull and that will greatly impact your ability to get through a lot of layers...as well as make sure you're using the correct needle! A good all purpose machine needle works well. A Schmetz 80/12 is my go to for most all of my cotton sewing. Presser foot also plays into it. Make sure you have an all purpose presser foot on to help the machine get over the bulk. And lastly, you might try sewing a tab at the beginning and end to assist the machine with getting itself going. If you try all of this, and you still have issues, you may want to consider a machine with a little more horse power. Or you could hand crank over the thickest parts. I hope that helps!!!

As I’m not a quilter I have no idea what you mean when you say “stitch using the tabs like you do in quilting.” Can you please explain this technique? Thank you!

Of course! A tab is a little piece of fabric you use at the start and finish of sewing. I helps to save thread and it will catch the "bird's nesting" we sometimes get at the start of sewing. You just sew over the little header, stitch and little space and then start the actual piece you want to sew. At the end, sew another tab. Then snip you sewing loose from the tabs. you'll see that your ender is now your new header. Wouldn't you want to wash the fabric first, especially cotton?

You certainly can! I generally don't for filming videos because it looks better on camera and in pictures before washing.

There's a general spray starch called Mary Ellen's spray starch. If you google it, it comes right up. You just mist a little onto the fabric, let it dry and then press away.

That was way too easy. I was waiting for another step or 2 which is usually something that ends giving me fits but it didn't come yay. I'm a terrible cutter....can't seem to get the proper hang of it no matter what I watch but will work on it. Tfs :D

Starch and a good iron is the secret to getting that to work. It helps SO MUCH. When I figured this out, I knew I had to share it on the channel, because it IS so easy!

You should definitely wash and dry your fabric if you are making these cloth napkins

I do agree with you, but for pictures and video, unwashed fabric looks much better. It also has more structure and sews nicer on camera, so for small projects like these I do not pre wash. When I go to sew my curtains or something to wear, I definitely prewash because in those cases the shrinkage would be a huge issue.

@@PattymacMakes Thank you for responding. Maybe just mention it because there are a lot of people that watch these videos that are beginners and it would be a shame to make such beautiful napkins and then come to find out that when their friends or family wash them they shrunk😱😱

@@dcwatashi It's a great point!! But if you're using fat quarters then it's a precut so if it shrinks now or later is not a deal breaker. And if you sew before, then at least the fabric doesn't unravel all over the place. I generally don't prewash the placemats or napkins or quilts and it's been fine. But I do understand your point. Maybe I should do a video on whether to prewash or not.

You definitely can do that! For purposes of photography and videos I generally don't. It looks better in pictures and sews nicer in a video when the fabric is unwashed.
