+Patrik Van Pee Actually I think the RU-vid video engine should be expanded to include a facility that provides various speeds of replay. It should also allow the camera perspective to zoom in. Then one could review the action at a size and speed that would suit the viewer. I'm not quite sure how that would be done but I'm sure there's someone out there who could manage it.

For real, if exchanges are so important, after each one we should get a close-up slow mo breakdown.

You would need much bigger file sizes so that the resolution didn't go to shit while slo-mo and zooming. If you want a video that plays in 0.5x speed in the same resolution, you would need to double the filesize, and that's just way too much of a hassle, imagine everything in youtube slowed down by a half, and they would need to double the servers. That and to get 0.5x, to get a good slo-mo you would need like 0.1x.

I'll keep that in mind for the next HEMA video. :)

Agree, but I don't really care. With interest comes more money, but I don't think that is a major problem. I like this a lot. At last, you see something much closer to a duel, than those cheesy hollywood crap in the movies.

minch333 Right? I've always found e.g. olympic fencing incredibly frustrating to watch. I am just utterly unable to convince myself that the split-second chaos they create would ever come remotely close to working in a real world scenario, whilst also, and partly therefore, being aesthetically unpleasing. This, however, has some of the elegance and decisiveness one sees e.g. in the fencing in Kurosawa movies. It is lightning quick, but there are distinguishable moves that make sense. The rhythm of it is just brilliant.

Old comment, but I don't agree. Pretty much every sport or hobby has a "cost of entry" associated with its specific kit. Take skiing or cycling for example- you can get set up in hema much cheaper than either of these sports with reliable quality gear. Also, there will be experienced members at most busy hema clubs that will have second-hand kit for sale that they will sell at good prices. You really don't have to break the bank and you don't have to buy it all at once.

After last night's final Its interesting to find your comment. Dennis was fighting with superior technique against novichenko, but nearly lost the gold to the insane and completely left field approach being employed by his opponent. Novichenko, at least in longsword, has terrible technique, he fights like one of those lightsaber duelists (and dresses like one too), but if you are not careful, its easy to fall prey to him. Dennis struggled to keep up for most of the match, and it wasnt until the final bout in sudden death that he was finally able to prove the masters superior by delivering a punishing indes blow after novichenko seized the vor with reckless abandon.

Not just because of wanting to be seen "honourable" ..... you want to have the satisfaction of actually winning.

Many of us HEMA people comes from reenactment steel fighting, huscarl and such. There are no referees keeping score there. But if you don't take your hits or demand that your bad hits should count you will be shunned by the community. The more honorable you are the more respected you will be. Doing it right is more important than winning for most of us. :)

+kfa4303 The problem with that is that it is difficult to do and still take the sharpness of real sword into consideration. For example, let's say that you hit me with a solid blow to my head while I rush you, throw you to the ground and hit you 5 times while you are on the ground. Should I then get 5 points and you 1? If the swords were sharp it's likely that I would be dead before I took you to the ground. I agree with you that it's a bit sad that you have to stop and reset, but in competition it's very difficult to get around it. In friendly sparring it's much easier to keep the flow.

I think a compromise might be to stop them after every point, but partially automate the scoring phase. Each judge holds a game controller with the options marked on it, and a computer automatically figures out the consensus based on a simple algorithm.

sounds like UMW is just your thing

UMW would be amazing if they can get people that are actually masters of their craft. From what i could see in the first fight it's just a whole lot of flailing. And once they got close no grapple techniques just outright trying to smash the other persons head instead of looking for a disarm etc.

That can easily be done with the ruleset. If longsword score is only valid after a hit to the head, thrust to the chest, or takedown, then the fights would go on for much longer. Another solution would be harnischfechten, but since that would quickly devolve into ringen its almost pointless.

+Schwertschwinger RU-vid has a setting for video speed. You can put it on 0,5. Not very good, but it's decent.

I highly recommend joining the local club if there is an opportunity, as this sport is as entertaining to watch as it is to participate in! :)

In all meanings of this word. It had a great preparation, recording period and initial editing stages. At the moment the focus is on finishing the script and producing the voice over track, and it takes time, which I, unfortunately, don't have much at the moment. It's fencing since any kind of sword fight is fencing, but it's not Olympic fencing, which is a very codified sport which over time has gone quite a bit away from the original martial arts technique, HEMA is a sport closer to historical fencing, but it's not the "fencing" people usually have in mind, which is the one you see on Olympics ^^

Rather something more valuable for HEMA practitioners, such as black feder, which can only be won, and can't be bought. Other prizes often include swords and other HEMA equipement.

It is fencing with a Longsword. We have fencing books from the 15th century which describe this style. So it is far older then the olympic way of fencing.

fencing is a broad term for many different types of sword combat, the most well known and what you see in the Olympics is fencing with a foil, but the techniques used are the same for using a rapier. here it's a longsword.

I'm pretty sure that they didn't count as much in this tournament. A hit to the hands gave you one point and a hit to the head gave you two.

because they are fighting with technique originally made for unarmoured judicial combat. In judicial combat, the winner could be determined with the "first blood", which means the first one to bleed loses the combat. So a strike to the hand counts as much as a deadly strike to the head. And even if the combat was to death, a strike to the hand still is a victory. The ennemy could drop his sword, or even just have 1 sec on inattention, and get killed in a split second. It makes sense

In a real duel, if you lose your weapon or the use of your main hand, you might as well have been hit in the head.

BOTN isn't historically accurate, however. It is a lot of fun to watch, but people should remember that it is not historical

I say that a stab in the face or groin is historical..but it will not make any friends. HEMA is probably the best modern representation of techniques used in unarmoured swordfighting of the past. Full contact like BOTN doesn't technically add anything new to fighting with blunt swords.
