I had heard once of the great friendship he had with James Stewart and of their different political views. They simply decided not to discuss politics and maintained a high level of respect and mutual affection for each other. True men both.
Wonderful!!! I didn’t know that- glad to have learned it... With the rise of pc culture we’ve all seemed to lose the simple idea to have any kind of respect for others’ beliefs- and their right to have them at all.
Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Spencer Tracy, John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Lucille Ball, Burgess Meredith, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Gary Copper, James Cagney, Walter Matthau and a host of others from that era of film making and plays will never have to worry about being over shadowed by today's "actors" for their screen/stage presence. True, there are some that have given phenomenal performances over the last 20 years or so, but not in a consistent manner of those of the 40's, 50's, 60's and early 70's.
I totally agree there was such a what they call body of work that came out of Hollywood starting in the thirties. Once they started talkies but even silent film is good if you don't mind the stage acting. Watching a silent films as they get started is watching theater for the masses where you couldn't get real theater you couldn't get to New York when you lived out in Beaver City Utah so suddenly the theater has come to you on the Silver Screen and the people are acting as they did back then on the stage to be able to have the allocution and movement for everyone to see them. Now we have better lighting & theaters are built with better capability for us to see the stage Etc so they don't have to make those huge movements. then as they build up to the filming outside it just takes off. I love the comedic acts of Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, the rest of them coming forward. I was very lucky that in our area there was a man who got the kids to stop at 3:00 in the afternoon no matter what you were doing and you'd sit down and watch television of all things not the internet not go out & play you would relax & watch movies. It was phenomena!l He taught us what the movie was about, how they filmed, if it was black & white how the Shadows were painted it wasn't from lighting Etc. and that is what is missing in letting the younger generation know how important it was to create these films. You think about the actors and actresses who went and worked on these films doing a film practically releasing one every single year that's rough being gone from your family way too much didn't matter whether you're a man or a woman you couldn't take your kids out there. Most of the time you're lucky if you were in a trailer the list is to make a hundred films means you worked every year making a film that's phenomenal Sometimes some of these people put out three or four films in a year because they could film two or three films and do the editing so that you came out when year after the other and then the films would slowly be distributed. But it was the quality of the people these are people who came through the depression they came through the war and then those that just missed the war knew how lucky they were and they saw what film was becoming and what it could be. Some of them did squander their lives and wasted it on drinking a drugs but a lot of them when you really see their biographies they spent it living their life performing. They spend it with their family. They tried to leave something behind that taught Society about life about the past or the present or gave you entertainment and made you feel something whether it was you walked out realizing what it was like to be in Chicago when you lived in a rural town in the middle of the pasture lands or you were laughing your head off over Lucille Ball and her Antics on a movie or television. People learn from this sadly I watched things change from where you accepted and learned about different cultures and Traditions that's what I felt this great span of production provided it was amazing but now people tear it apart say it was politically Incorrect it was this it was that well it also changed things it made people realize hey we are doing things wrong hey we need to be more correct we need to be nice we need to be real people not pretend cardboard cutouts. Now everybody lies about what their lifestyle is and what they are and who they are and how my home was and oh my my culture is so different from your culture no it's not unless you've come from another country into the United States to live here your culture if you've grown up in the United States and you've lived here for three generations pretty much you are Americanized Maybe your grandparents aren't but your parents pretty much were and you definitely are I know that because that happened to my family and I also know that film helps us reach out and realize that hey we have changed we are better people and I'm tired of people putting down what these people did they were just making movies making a living making movies some of the movies made great statements and told about the past going all the way back to even caveman stuff some of it was funny some of it was really really serious but it really gave us something to look at there's not that body of work anymore and most of it is just really worthless films there's a few stars out there but they don't do the kind of work I can say a few maybe Matthew McConaughey works hard like that. George Clooney was one but he got married and he slowed down but they also know that they need to try to do something for their families because they watched what happened with making too many movies how it destroyed the older Generations marriages. So I hope that the younger generation will be able to create something because I really RU-vid's just people talking and watching old videos and well musical entertainment yeah definitely I really like watching people play their instruments and do Feats of action Etc so but there's definitely something different when somebody follows a script and just makes it into a believable character that when you walk out of there you wonder who the story was based on like when Mr Skinner said that sadly wherever stanwyck's marriage created famous movie that's been done again and again even to this modern day A Star is Born. She married an older actor who at first his star was rising and she was a nobody and then she started to pick up parts and more and more and suddenly she was the star and he fell into severe alcoholism. They are divorce was very hard their marriage was very brutal she didn't want to leave him but she had to for her own safety to have your life put on film and you're the actress they based it on must have been one of the hardest things to have happen. We don't have people like that anymore that can go through hell have their own wife turned into a Academy Award winning film then stand up and say hey I can still do a good job and pull it out of the Hat that's what's missing.
I saw on Golden Pond when I was 10 and remember my mom crying when he got lost and explained to her why he came back so fast. They were so good it that movie.
Hollywood was desperate...for Narcissistic womenizers back then...he is Old, Dead and Very Forgotten. A disgrace as a man behind his mask. He committed his wife to an Asylum and drove his wife to suicide on purpose, to get rid of her. So he could marry his mistress his next victim.

Although his daughter Jane leaves a bad taste in my mouth for betraying our troops - thus America - in Viet Nam during the war, ‘On Golden Pond’ is among my very favorite movies of all time. RIP Henry Fonda
Wow, another fantastic documentary by Jerry Skinner. I believe that I watched every western movie that Hank made. Him and Jimmy Stewart were wonderful acting with each other, they seemed to bring out the best of each other. Thank you Jerry, I will watch this many more times, just to hear your voice. Klute was a great film by Jane. I loved almost every Henry Fonda film...he had that charisma that just captured your attention as soon as he appeared on screen. Thanks for this Jerry, as always you do a fantastic job.

Seeing Henry Fonda always gives me very special feeling. He looks and talks like my dad. Who I realy miss. Dad didn't have dimples but... Oh those "baby blues" as Fonda always called them.
12 Angry Men is a brilliant film. I think everyone should see it! I saw it as a teenager. It made such an impression on me that I never forgot the title.

As always, Jerry Skinner biographies are the absolute best. He deserves an award for his understanding and documenting such complex personalities. Jerry always tells the whole story without any touch of sensationalism. Being born in the mid 1930s, I saw most all of the great movies in theaters from the 1940s on up. These actors and their movies have survived the test of time, and now on RU-vid, are still favorites, and a great escape. Must add, Skinner is the maiden name of my mother-in-law. How The West Was Won was overlooked as it also starred starred Fonda along with Jimmy Stewart among many others and had a segment directed by Ford. My favorite western movie.

My favorite Henry Fonda movie was Young Mr Lincoln. The was never a great actor to me but was in a lot of good movies. Any legacy he might have left was totaled by his twisted son Peter & traitor daughter Hanoi Jane. Sad
I remember Jane's liberal activism and rebranding herself as a political crusader against the Vietnam war but had not known much about her 'twisted' brother....
I just watched "Fort Apache" the other day. Mostly I wanted to see Shirley Temple acting as a Young woman. Her father the coronel, was played by Fonda who was a down right nasty contrary personality. I had never seen Henry Fonda play that type of character, he did it well. Of course John Wayne played his typical part, but more then the story, I enjoyed watching Shirley, Fonda, and Wayne acting.

My only regret is that you didn't mention the time he played the President of the United States seeking to prevent nuclear catastrophe in the Cold War drams "Fail Safe". Keep up the great works!
