The classic Henry 22 lever action rifle, model H001, is the best lever action for under 300 bucks. Sure it has it's short comings, like cheap materials used on certain parts but these are the sacrifices made to keep the little rifle budget friendly.
Check out the youth model of this rifle, I did a video on it a few years ago: • Henry youth 22 lever a...

Just a comment here on Henry service...I bought 2 AR-7s a little over 2 years ago and my son was using his and while cleaning it decided to investigate the trigger mechanism. In the process he let a spring get away from him. Unable to find it he told me what happened and I said I would call Henry service and get a new spring. I called them and got a gentleman on the line who said the service person had stepped away for a moment and could he help me. I told him what happened and he asked me if I cold hold for a minute and I said sure. A minute or so later a woman picked up and asked me what I needed so I told her and asked if I could get a full set of springs just in case my son went exploring again. she said no problem. I asked her if I could get a catalog and she transferred me to the proper line for that. I tried to ask her if I could give her my card number to pay for the spring set but she had already transferred me. After I gave my address to the catalog department I asked them to get me back to service to give info to pay for mt parts. He did so and the woman who answered said she remembered my request and was sending my parts out...2 full sets of springs at no charge to me. I have since bought a 22 Magnum and have a (not so) short list of other Henrys I plan to purchase. I am a Henry believer for life!!!

I bought a HENRY Golden Boy, from Walmart a year ago and asked if I could have one that was not a display item. They said no. I looked the rifle over very carefully and did not see any problems so I bought the Golden Boy, and went home. I had not shot it since I had purchased it and that was over a month and a half when I was looking at it one day I noticed that the gold butt plate was scratched. I was disappointed and thought to myself that that is my own fault for going against my own better judgment when I bought it from Walmart. I called Henry and explained to the woman on the phone that I had purchased it from Walmart and that I had not noticed the scarring on the butt plate. I asked her how much would it cost for a new butt plate. She said no problem, I will have one sent out to you in the mail. I was very surprised, they sent me the whole butt stalk and the plate.

That’s great cost them maybe a few Dollars if not cents…But now they got a couple of hundred and a customer for life if not customers for generations because your son will not forget that and he too will purchase Henry products now that’s what America used to be all about and these other companies need to take notice.🇺🇸

I just bought one of these as a surprise Christmas gift for my 76 year-old father-in-law. He's had a rough year with losing his wife of 53 years last fall, and can use a dose of boyhood joy. I saw the Henry catalog he had requested on his kitchen counter, but I know he'd never spend the money on himself to get one. Can't wait 'till Christmas, this year!

You are right about price versus materials. I bought a Browning BL-22 and that has an all steel receiver. It also costs over $600! And while it has nice checkering and all - the trigger is very stiff, almost 7 lbs. That might change after I break it in. I also got Skinner sights. In the case of the Browning, I needed a much taller front sight for the receiver-mounted Skinner rear sight, which Skinner also sells. I plan on getting a Henry lever in 22 mag with Skinner sights one day (Henry has a model with Skinner sights). Congrats on your Henry!

Lately I've been wanting a .22lr rifle for purposes of pest control, primarily, but of course some backyard plinking will also be involved. I considered going with a Rossi Rio Bravo to save a few bucks, but ultimately went with the Henry H001. Just came home with it a little bit ago, actually. Haven't even had the chance to shoot it yet. We live within the city limits, but we keep chickens and quail and rabbits, so varmints have been an issue at times. I wanted to be able to shoot CCCI's Quiet-22 ammo or shorts or even Longs (if I ever find any), so the Henry is just the ticket. I've watched probably half a dozen of your videos (and multiple times each, at that) in the process of researching what rifle to go with. Very well done videos, and very helpful. Thank you. So I just now subscribed to your channel.

I do not load my Big Boy with the action open. I tried in the past for safety and discovered that sometimes it causes a jam. I lower the hammer manually and let the transfer bar do its job. The Classic model may not have that issue. I love that Big Boy rifle (H006S). I'd like to get the H001 in the future.
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 5 лет назад
Good point. I have been in contact with Henry since this and other videos on my Henry rifles and ask them why they don't recommend loading with the action open and they explained to me that in some rifles and with some ammunition it will jam the action exactly as you just described. I wish I could go back and say that in my video but once it's posted I can't change it. Thanks for pointing it out. I am going to pin your comment to the top so others will see it easier.
@Squib1911
@Squib1911 5 лет назад
@@buffalosoutdoors OK. Yeah. I'd like to be able to leave the action open and never have the issue, but three times my Big Boy jammed because of it, so I am taking what I consider the next safest route and doing the hammer down/ transfer bar thing.

I wouldn't sell my Henry H001 ever. It really is a great all around 22lr. The walnut stock is great looking. The action works like a gun that twice the money I paid. I topped mine with a Weaver Classic 4x28 Rimfire scope. It really is a very accurate little gun for the money. Service is best for Henry rifles. My forearm was a little loose. The barrel band was as tight as it could be. I called and Anthony hand picked fancy walnut with the tiger striped walnut for me and sent me a half dozen barrel bands to make sure everything fit together perfectly..I was very impressed with the service..Especially on the lowest priced gun they sell...Great company. Next for me is a .357 Big Boy to match my GP100 357 to have the same ammo work for both..Great fun for some cowboy shooting and definitely good enough for some whitetail hunting up to 150yds or so. I will get a Long Ranger someday to when they start adding more calibers to the line up...My bolt gun is a very nice Rem. model 7 stainless chambered in 7mm-08...It is offered in .308 and I would happily take one of those also...Although the 7mm-08 outshoots its parent cartridge of .308. Meaning long range accuracy and energy...but a hit is a hit I always say....Having a metal box mag on a lever gun sounds awesome to me.

Realizing that I live in Silicon Valley, CA and you live in a rural area of Ky, the first thing that you said that caught my attention was that you said "Zero" and not "Oh." It was then that I realized that your review would be interesting and informative. It appears to be the best Henry review that I have seen. I have noticed the "they used the wrong screwdriver" damage on some of the single action Rugers that I own. A phone call was all it took to get the new parts shipped, they even replaced the wood grips that were damaged next to where the screwdriver would go. After I bought the Ruger bolt action .22 (that uses the same magazine as the 10/22) I noticed that Boyd's was selling a red, white and blue stock that they called "Old Glory." I ordered one, and then called Ruger asking about the purchase of the two metal parts that have to go in the stock. Then when I asked them what they were going to charge me for the parts for this aftermarket stock she said, "Oh there will be no charge." I then cautioned her that before she commits herself to that, she should know that the Old Glory stock would be great on Independence Day, but I also am going to get walnut stock. She said "OK, no problem." and sent me two sets of metal inserts. There can be no doubt that Henry and Ruger are my favorite gunmakers. I think that my custom engraved Golden Boy receiver cover will be delivered tomorrow. Mine will have my Amateur Radio Callsign engraved on it. I have noticed that Henry is making single shot, break open rifles. But they are for only one caliber. What I like about my H&R Handi Rifle is they can factory fit multiple barrels in multiple calibers. Mine has 5 barrels. I really wish Henry would do that.

I just bought the Henry HO-18 .410 shotgun for my wife for her birthday. It's a real little beauty. we've decided to buy a .22 Henry next. At first I was considering the Golden or Silver Boy versions but given how good this little HOO1 is I think we'll save some money and go with one of these instead. I'm kind of thinking about the Long Ranger in 5.56 quite a bit too, Henry is a bit like CZ in that they can become an addiction.

I have a few favorite loads for 44. I'm a Keith bullet guy myself when it comes to 44. I run 18 grs of 2400 powder for a general duty magnum target load, 20.5 grs of 2400 for a heavy magnum load, and 20 grs of N110 for a heavy duty load. All with the Lyman 429421 Keith bullet. If you want to run 44 specials, I love 5.2 grs of Bullseye with the same bullet. They are tack drivers. If you run the Keith in your Marlin, you may have to run them in 44 special brass because of how long the Keith bullet is loaded. I think I like 2400 powder and the Keith bullet because it was Keith's load when he brought the 44 "magnum" to remington all those years ago. He took the 44 special to heights nobody would have ever thought, and the 44 magnum was born. I shoot more 444 then anything else. Great video Buffalo

Great review. Only thing I think is missing from Henry’s is not having a steel receiver and the 2 barrel bands in steel. I think it would be worth the extra money. Thanks

Receiver I believe is steel. It is the receiver cover that is not.

I had this same model Henry about 6-7 years ago bought it from a friend of mine that he had bought it new from Academy Sports. He wanted $200 for it and I thought that was good deal no more then he had used it. I kept it about a year and sold it to another co-worker for what I gave for it $200. I wished I'd never sold it,but I had the tactical fever back then and bought a Sig 522 Classic Carbine. I've been thinking about selling the Sig and buying another Henry or Marlin. I've gone back to my roots of firearms with wood furniture. Must be a thing about growing up in the 60's and early 70's lol.

Hey man you sound like me. I go back and forth sometimes. It seems like no matter how far I stray though I always end up with a lever action and a revolver in my line up.

I was born in the 80’s and grew up in the 90’s and early 200’s.. I’ve got a Glock and an AR for my modern needs but all my other guns are wood furniture lever actions and single action revolvers.. and like them more than the modern guns. I don’t think it’s the generation you were born in just the appreciation of beautiful guns

Thank you for giving a detailed review. Love video that address the nuances I.e when you mentioned how the lever feels like less drag when there is no round. Action looks buttery smooth. Gonna DROS one tomorrow. So by the looks of it the bolt doesn’t open when it’s fired it’s last round?

Nice video, Buffalo. I know guys that wouldn't part with their Henry for anything and I know guys that wanted to smash theirs to pieces. This is my experience with Henry rifles. I purchased a new octagon barrel 22Mag about 4 years ago and after "breaking in" the barrel and shooting from a lead sled at 50 yards the best grouping was 3". I tried several different types of ammo and wasn't able get any better than 3". To me that wasn't acceptable so that one got traded. I also had someone ask me to check their 22LR because they felt it wasn't very accurate. Using the lead sled and firing 10 rounds the spread was 7" at 50 yards. The action was very stiff and also failed to eject constantly. I suggested he contact Henry for servicing. I've handled several Henry rifles in retail stores and for the money they "look" okay but my actual experience shooting Henrys hasn't been impressive. I've shot several and feel their workmanship isn't consistent. I shot one that was very accurate and had smooth action, one was very accurate but had a very stiff action and several with very nice actions but not accurate at all. I do agree they have great customer service.

Great comment. I think most viewers and certainly my subscribers understand that I only have one sample when I do a gun review. However there are a few folks that don't fully understand what that means and comments like yours help to get that across. My sample worked as advertised but that doesn't mean that every rifle Henry has ever produced has done so. I appreciate you taking the time to leave your comment here so others can read it and also the fact that you kept it clean. I get a lot of comments in my spam filter (I try to keep the comments section halfway respectable here) where people go on a big profanity filled rant about how I must be lying since their gun didn't work like mine did.

I like the Golden Boy but I'm rough on my guns, I knew I'd be putting it through some briar patches and scuffing it up so I went with the plain classic model, I still won't enjoy putting dings on it but it won't hurt quite as bad....lol

Buffalo, That's a good point. The H001 is a great "hacking around" gun, especially if kids are going to be using it as well. I think of my Golden Boy as a "range gun." It's too pretty to take out into the back country.
@garageguy879
@garageguy879 7 лет назад
I've got a couple of older 22's for beating around the woods.I'd keep The Golden Boy in a nice carrying case and just use it for target shooting.
