I just watched that panel before coming here and I'm glad someone else noticed, Johnny looks like a broken man in that video you can see it in his eyes and his mannerisms. I've met Mr Lydon when he was sober, and he was a genuinely nice guy. I think his "WWF" persona was definitely a bit larger than life that evening, and the British sense of humor was a bit lost in translation to the American audience due to the alcohol imbibement. He was (and probably still is) feeling the loss of his wife. Lost her back then due to Alzheimers, and now also in the physical sense. It has to screw with your head, and some people are more sensitive than others when it comes to hiding their inner feelings. The interview was a snapshot in time, but not something that I'd judge his entire life by. We all make mistakes. It's a shame it was emphasized in such a negative light... for sure, not one of his more tactful evenings... but I'm sure he'd be far more coherent filming it today. Much respect to Henry Rollins though, and all who took part in the panel interview that evening!

Its worth pointing out that British "humor" is a generational level of arrogance that many follows men British men of that era
@calledbythefire666
@calledbythefire666 3 месяца назад
@@velvetinedrapes4359 The generational level of arrogance is not exclusively a British trait. Thousands of cultures worldwide are similarly afflicted in believing their penis is bigger than everyone else's... particularly Americans, who love to ram it down everyone's throat every chance they get, that THEIR country is the "greatest in the world!" I'm in no way disputing USA's claim... I have no jingoistic notion in the slightest when it comes to global penile protrusion measurement, and could care less about drunken patriotic flag-shagging, however going back to your original point, I totally agree that UK citizens suffer from a spectacularly unhealthy self-deprecating nihilistic "own worst enemy" sense of confrontational humor which borders on projected self-harm. However it must be stressed that British humor (in my experience & perception) is not solely arrogant... is light years away from being one dimensional and has a multitude of different facets depending on which area it's born. It's all subjective & I truly believe that each member of the panel that night were there for a damn good reason, in that they each played a significant part in contributing to their pocket of the punk genre of music, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned. 😉

Henry has told this same story in a manner slightly more generous to Lydon. When I first heard the story he mentioned that Lydon's wife was at home, sick with Alzheimer's. (she died this month)

@brianm2881
@brianm2881 11 месяцев назад
I'm glad he did that, at least. Without a doubt, Lydon's behaviour that night was not cool, but Rollins - being empathetic as he is - should be able to look at the wider context of the situation and recognise Lydon was most probably someone in the depths of emotional pain at the time and just kind of lashing out, and not just lay into him. If Lydon had been sober and not had an ailing wife, he'd probably still have been a dick, but maybe at least waited his turn to speak.

Johnny is the drunk uncle we all put up with because he did so much for us when we were young. We love him, we are even a bit protective, but we all shake our heads and give each other the " i know, but what do you do?" look. He helped us skinny alienated kids with bad teeth and scoliosis find our path and i will be forever greatful to our badly behaved old drunk uncle for that. Edit : his wife was dying of dementia, he was loyal loving and looked after her tenderly to the end, he even stopped this interview to take a call from his distressed wife and explained to the audience why....he is a prick but this made me respect him as a good man and this one act was a lesson for all of us.

One of the things that Henry keeps saying that always makes me cringe is: "I come from the blue-collar working world." The guy had a couple of service jobs as a teenager... like every teenager does... but his father (while an asshole) was a college professor, and he's spoken about how his mother was a high-flying executive in DC. He went to a private military school. His upbringing may have sucked, but he's always been middle-class, and the punk/hard-core movement in the US was dominated by well-off, white suburban kids.

What crap, I watched the press conference on youtube. Sure John Lydon was drunk, but still talking sense. He actually said "Iggy was not a punk", which is true as punk is a moronic term invented by the UK music press to insult the new bands like the Pistols, the Damned, etc. As for Marky Ramone, he just doesn't understand the huge difference between what happened in the UK and the CBGB's scene. The Ramones did a good album but then got stuck in a rut, that's not what happened with the UK bands, especially the Pistols who were not in it for a career as a rock n roll group! The real difference being the direct attack on the way things were in the UK, that's why the British Establishment feared these bands so much. They were the next step upwards from the 60's rebels.
@1985cactus
@1985cactus Месяц назад
A good album? More like three-four perfect albums. And a bunch of good ones, afterwards. Should The Ramones sing about attacking the British government? I don't understand what you are saying. @haraldtheyounger5504
@haraldtheyounger5504 Месяц назад
@@1985cactus Obviously, we all have differing outlooks and tastes. It's the lyrics which make the difference, the Ramones were traditionalists indulging themselves with relationship problems, whereas the likes of the Sex Pistols had a deeper dimension. Why would an American band sing about the UK government, when they have enough evil within their own? As for Lydon, ask him. I cannot answer, but I do agree he should have quit after Album, but he may have desired more mainstream appeal thereafter.

00:00 🎥 Henry Rollins shares his reluctance toward music documentaries despite being frequently asked due to his ability to articulate thoughts. 00:27 💰 Rollins agreed to be in the punk rock documentary but requested payment, tired of providing knowledge without compensation. 00:55 🎤 He attended an honor panel for the documentary in Los Angeles with various musicians, including Johnny Rotten and Marky Ramone. 01:24 🤨 Johnny Rotten disrupted the panel, behaving drunkenly and insulting others, including Iggy Pop, causing the discussion to derail within 11 minutes. 02:33 😔 Rollins refrained from confronting Rotten despite feeling sorry for his state, acknowledging Rotten's influence and impact on music. 03:29 🤝 Despite the chaos, Rollins managed a somewhat amicable interaction with Rotten, reflecting on the odd and surreal nature of the encounter. 04:13 🤷‍♂ Rotten's manager, apologetic for Rotten's behavior, acknowledged the situation's nature after the chaotic panel.

I've seen henry since tell the story being a lot more generous to john it was a sad time as john was going through a bad time in his life wife with dementia, dad having died and brother with cancer, he hit the bottle hard to cope with it. It was just a sad and unfortunate state of affairs, I remember henry saying since that he wished he knew what he was going through.

I found the video of this event on YT ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HhVZLL1pMQ0.html. Rollins' description is quite distorted. Lydon isn't running around the room, he's seated the whole time. Admittedly, he's obnoxious as hell and hogs the mic somewhat, but other people get to speak too. He has a great shouting match with Marky Ramone at one point, and Ramone hilariously ranks him out Brooklyn style, which Lydon clearly enjoys. The exchange Rollins describes between himself and Lydon happens while they are sitting on the panel as part of the discussion, he doesn't walk over to him. The whole event was fun and crazy, definitely doesn't end in 10 minutes--the video is 24 minutes, and the beginning was cut so it probably ran over half an hour. Without Lydon, it would've been a total rock geezer borefest.

He said later it was such a shame because John Lydon was one of the most intelligent and kind people he'd ever met but as soon as the camera started rolling it was Johnny Rotten. But now he's talking about how he called johnny out, grabbed his fingers and would have knocked him out, what? he was laughing the entire time and backing away everytime Johnny gave a response, you can even see on the video he is indeed holding his fingers and that's because he's filming him smiling.

The video, or the part that was videoed, is on youtube. Henry had the best reaction of everyone there, imo, which was just to laugh at the absurdity of it. So, in a tiny, minute way I cringe to hear him say he thought about punching out John at the time. Partly cause that's always easy to say afterwards, and partly cause it would have been a stupid reaction. It's not a good idea to take a drunk person seriously, imo. John was clearly pretty drunk and obviously alcohol just exacerbates his existing condition; tending to be as controversial and verbally confrontational as possible. It did make him look sad. And I'd bet he regrets it. But these things happen sometimes. And I think in American culture, people take stuff like this a little too seriously. Just my opinion. And why I say Henry's response at the time was perfect. This isn't to excuse drunken behaviour, but there's just no point in getting offended and arguing with a drunk person. You just can't take that seriously. Even they don't believe what they're saying most of the time. Just my opinion. But it was pretty entertaining.

Lydon was on it and immediately couldn't shut up for 5 minutes. A woman member of the audience who said she was a fan even told him to belt up so she could ask a question.
