I remember when my husband and I were dating. We wrote love letters back and forth to each other. One of his letters had the words, "you shot the arrow of love into my heart" We've been married almost 30 years. The love letters stopped years ago. 😢

Henry did not divorce Catherine of Aragon. He had the marriage annulled.
@worldadventuretravel
@worldadventuretravel 5 месяцев назад
That's incorrect, the Pope denied his requests for annulment for seven years, which is why the entire protestant reformation happened. At that point it was declared a divorce.

Cromwell didn't manipulate Henry about Anne - Henry was having an affair with Jane Seymore by then; he wanted to get rid of Anne, so Cromwell was helping him.

Why are Henry’s love letters to Anne Boleyn at the Vatican archives? How did they get there?

Probably by Royal Mail

He was trying to appeal to the Vatican to allow him to divorce Catherine to marry Anne Boleyn, and they would have been sent to the Vatican as proof of his love. They refused hence he created his own Church of England and divorced Catherine.

Researchers do NOT 'unearth' documents in archives. Archivists arrange and describe records, which enables retrieval and access. The researcher reads the records. Whilst the researcher might be the first person to interpret a document in a certain way, they do not discover or dig up or unearth the records. Without the work of the archivists, researchers have zero access to archival records.

This is what I don’t get. Why was it possible for Ann Boleyn to refuse Henry until they got married.?? But then, when it comes to Catherine Howard, they say she couldn’t refuse him when he had his eye on her because he was the king!! Which is it??!!
@graphiquejack
@graphiquejack 9 месяцев назад
Probably because of Anne Boleyn’s fate, and every other person who denied Henry anything. A lot had happened from 1526 when he began pursuing Anne to around 1539 when he noticed Kathryn. He was a changed man, much more demanding, brutal and tyrannical. To cross him at that point would have been dangerous.
@dorothywillis1
@dorothywillis1 9 месяцев назад
I think the narrator exaggerates Anne's influence on Henry. She tried to avoid him at first, leaving and going home from court. This narrator says Anne was the one in charge, but she doesn't give any evidence for that. Remember, he was the king. Any woman he decided he wanted would have a difficult time saying no. Remember he could give and take away jobs that people depended on for their livings.

No, the Parliamentary Treason Act is NOT 'hidden away' in the Parliamentary Archives. It is professionally managed by professional archivists, which is why the researchers for this programme are about to view it.

Very interesting history. I'm struck by just how much the English people put up with. This is especially true considering how religious people were at that time. I guess the people of England had been selected by the Romans for compliance. Any non compliant celt was probably snuffed out quickly by them. It makes sense to me now, how England became the empire it became. Empire, (stealing other countries' stuff) is only possible when the people go along with whatever the head guy or gal says. An unaccountable government has a license for any atrocity, and this fact can be clearly seen in Henry VIII's reign.
