For the amount of time TalkSport spent talking about United this season, they were genuinely awful at discussing United’s actual problems. Ten Hag’s best lineup by far this season was Onana, Shaw, Martínez, Varane, Dalot, Casemiro, Mainoo, Bruno, Garnacho, Rashford, and Hojlund. Shaw missed 26 Premier League matches. Martínez missed 27. Varane missed 16. Casemiro missed 13. Mainoo missed 14. Rashford missed 5. And Hojlund missed 8. In particular, United’s back line was absolutely destroyed this year and they literally had no natural left back for most of the season. The biggest takeaway for me this season was the media either do not understand the massive negative domino effect injuries had on tactics and style of play. Or they were deliberately ignoring it all season because they’d rather sensationalize United instead of objectively discussing the real issues with the team. Either way, the media was extremely lazy this season with United.

Not a United fan, but they've had the most injuries, about 10 more than the average, and those injuries have been focused on one area of the pitch. The poor league form is to be expected because of that, although eighth is still particularly bad, but a cup run really was the only viable route to any kind of success for them given that situation - possibly exacerbated by players dodging games or by sub standard medical work. It makes me think of Ronaldo saying the facilities haven't improved since he was there, as well as Zlatan saying similar things about the quality. Martinez is so massive for them, and having him Shaw, and Malacia out most of the season is the reason why the goals conceded and goal difference were so dire. Having to play a half fit Casemeiro at centre back really showed how badly they were struggling! I think he's earned another go, two trophies in two seasons is nothing to sniff at, particularly when it's more than most other teams in the league have to show for their seasons, and given he's bringing Mainoo and Garnacho through as well, it really suggests a positive trajectory to me. Given that context and the contrasting examples of Arsenal and Chelsea, it really seems like it's safer to keep with him and see if he delivers next season in a more stable environment and with another year's experience.

Henry Winter is not surveying the whole scene. With their first choice centre-back pairing Martinez and Varane missing for most of the season, the team has been vulnerable. Their DM was meant to be Casemiro whose legs are slowing up and his back-up Amrabat is new. Also Shaw who's a strong influence on the team has been missing. It's fine saying other teams have had injuries but this is a team in development that cannot afford injuries. This is harsh criticism by Winter who wants to court popularity with the Man Utd fans but either doesn't understand what ten Hag has had to deal with or if he does then he thinks cynicism is a mark of authority.
