It's really refreshing to see an actress that's basically the same age as her leading men. She's 3 years younger than Grant and a year older than Stewart. That is and always has been so rare in Hollywood.
@@justforfun2767 This problem mostly arose in the 1950's. Most movies are with established actor and young rising-star actress. For example Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn in Love in the Afternoon, they had 28 years age difference but playing a couple. Or Clark Gable with Grace Kelly in Mogambo, another 28 years age difference. Check movies by Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Doris Day, Sophia Loren, Eva-Marie Saint, and Marilyn Monroe. It wasn't prominent anymore in 1960's and forwards. with many new generation of actors taking the torch of Hollywood.
I miss there being younger male leads. It feels like there’ve only been a few new ‘leading men’ in the past few years - Tom Holland and that other guy with the angular face (can’t remember his name atm, lol). It feels like all of the other male stars playing roles for ‘young’ men are in their late 30s, 40s or even 50s.
Forever mad that these two didn't end up together. The chemistry, character growth and the way they came to see each other differently by the end: beautiful, that's what great romance is about. Whereas with Dexter everything felt, by lack of a better word, stilled.
I originally viewed it this way but the devil is in the details. Dexter simply knew Tracy better and had far better control over the situation while Mike had his head in the clouds.
I love the way Jimmy stares into her. Not at but in. Like he’s pouring water into a glass. So focused and careful and precise. Studying every part of her. His voice is warm and quivering and it’s a joy to watch.
Goddamn, she had such power on-screen. Another great actor like Jimmy Stewart is sharing the frame but you can't take your eyes off of her. Old Katherine had something that hasn't been duplicated since. Greatest actor of all-time, in my opinion.

I love how "The Philadelphia Story" uses polarities and contradictions in its use of language: "Shut up, shut up! Oh, Mike, keep talking" and "Stop using those foul words!" in response to Dexter saying how "chaste and virginal" the goddess of the moon is. Wonderful writing and an inspiration to all aspiring writers of today.
Around 3:15, I imagined Jimmy Stewart stopping and saying “Am I talking too much?”, and a guy across the street yelling “yes! Why don't you kiss her!?”
I SO LOVE that her character couldn't bring herself to utter the phrase " human frailty. " And the way that Ms. Hepburn delivered that " non " line was as brilliant as any line she delivered in the entire movie.
The modern day social animal would eat him on sight. A part of him is in nearly every man. The main difference between this man and the one on screen is that the one on screen is never challenged for his personhood. I could say manhood but then human and humane civility and kindness could be misinterpreted.
For anyone not knowing the back story to this movie. After Hepburn was deemed "box office poison" in Hollywood she bought out her contract and moved back home to Connecticut. A friend of hers wrote the play The Philadelphia Story knowing it would be a great part for her. She performed in the play about 400 times and it was very successful. Howard Hughes was dating Hepburn at the time he bought the rights to the play for Hepburn. She brought the script to Hollywood and insisted she play the lead role. She asked for Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy to costar with her, but they were not available so she was given Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. Grant and Hepburn had stared together in Bringing Up Baby, Holiday, Silvia Scarlet before making this movie. Grant performed in the circus before becoming a movie start and while filming the movie Holiday he taught Hepburn how to do a barrel roll from standing on his shoulders. This perfect scene was certainly worthy of an Oscar! One of my all-time favorites.... You don't see acting like this anymore. Really liked the music being played at the beginning. Don't know if max Steiner did it as part of the movie music or if a band like Larry Clinton or Artie shaw did it. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!
Why didn't they end up together... This scene pains me too much. I usually do not care for romance in movies but this scene is an exception. It was amazing. I so wished that they ended up together...
I just now saw this movie. This is no doubt the best seduction scene ever taken. I don't know if James Stewart could sleep that night, or if any in the filming set, could. What A Might!
EVERYTHING suggested Grant was a better fit. Grant knew her inside and out, and loved her for her faults as well as her good qualities (and vice versa). Stewart just wanted to put her on a pedestal & worship her (which, by the end, she DID NOT want).
Lynn Turman are you kidding? It was George who wanted to put her on a pedestal, and Dexter who told her she's made of bronze. Mike was the one who realised she was "flesh and blood".

It's a beautiful image, but the same thing .. and it feels great when you're drunk while lying about what you actually want in life and dealing with your vulnerabilities, but that dreamy ideal will wear off eventually, and then what will he see? Dexter had cautioned her that she has a goddess complex, an unwillingness to accept imperfection in herself or others. He told her she'll just have spirited men looking for that spirited conquest until she manages to find that human frailty of hers and accept it ... Her dad later hit on the same thing, saying she *might as well* be made of bronze until she finds it. She doesn't accept flaws, so the men saying they're in love with her assume she doesn't have them, because she refuses to acknowledge them ... so they see her as the mythical creature she plays herself off as, but that hasn't given her happiness. Mike would've led to the same chaotic relationship she had with Dexter, once they both sobered up from the romanticism of the night. Dexter sobered up literally, and once he did, he was able to figure out what the issue was, and then worked on getting her to see it for herself, to see herself and accept the flaws like he did. Besides, Mike still had Liz waiting for him, and she really "got" him, in much the same way that Dexter got Tracy.
To this day I wish they had kept it ambiguous whether or not Stewart banged Hepburn here. I see all the reasons why she wound up marrying Grant's character, but there's a whimsy and synergy between these two that isn't replicated elsewhere in the movie. Stewart is the first person to openly acknowledge and appreciate Hepburn as a living, breathing human being. This is a special scene between two incandescent talents and it makes you wish we still had them. I have to think that this scene was the major source of inspiration for the Edward Norton/Emma Stone scene in BIRDMAN.
Both are wonderful in their own way. I personally love Hepburn, she is less perfect and more wonderful (Imho) Kelly is perfect, but not enough scratchiness for me.. Stewart is absolutely adorable
I know what you mean. Stewart was soooo good in this movie you want him to win Katharine. But thematically, Grant has to win her for the movie to make sense.
Ugh, the ending of this movie just did not fit in my opinion. There wasn't a lot that suggested Grant's character was the best man for her to choose in the end other than the fact he was PLAYED by Grant. How disappointing, Stewart was the better choice...
MearickLee Well, first of all, which was the most important of all, the contemporary audience wouldn't accept it if Cary Grant didn't get the girl. He was too big a star (apparently he never played the villain-a fact that I think is really crazy. In Hitchcock's Suspicion, he almost became one, but the ending was changed because they were afraid that fans would become angry if Grant was the villain, because of which I think the ending becomes really disappointing). Also, I don't think there is a wide plot hole resulted from the ending-although I totally on James Stewart's character's side-there has been a lot of suggestions that Tracy and Haven haven't really gotten over each other and they're really each other's "true love" (remember the ship?). True, Mike is able to see her a little bit differently from the others, but their acquaintanceship is really short and there is alcohol involved, and more importantly, we are shown that Haven is the one who know her most, inside and outside, he knows and is able to predict her when she can't herself; he is even willing to sacrifice his reputation in front of her in inviting the reporters to protect her family's reputation. She is also able to become herself in front of him; she's sort of trying to become the perfect lady-'someone else'-in front of her fiancée, and to Mike, as I mention, alcohol is involved, and although natural, it is quite apparent that they are still just getting to know each other. Besides that, class really does play an important theme in the story, as is shown in previous scenes, she is unable to understand the struggle of the lower class people like Mike (the scene when they just got back from the library), although she keeps denying her "upper class" background. This will really affect their compatibility. Sorry I'm just blabbering..
C T yeah but to me Dexter was best fit to be friends with her. I didn’t like that he blamed his alcoholism on her and there were also hints that domestic violence was involved. I think the chemistry was way better with Mike. Or at least that she ends up alone but having learnt more about herself and self improvement. The. @@marvel096 of course the chemistry was better between two drunk people 😅 But keep in mind that one, it had already been established that someone else has been patiently waiting for Mike to mature, and that sort of thing doesn't go unrewarded in 1930s cinema. I think Liz can do better than Mike, really, who took way too long to notice her devotion, but ... it's what she wanted, so bravo. She waited for him to mature, instead of just jumping in blind with him - which could result in something like Tracy and Dexter had (the first time). She opted to spend the years "wasted" quietly paying attention and showing him that she's there while waiting for him to see out of himself - peaceful years of friendship. Tracy and Dexter spent years "wasted" on fighting and trying to destroy eachother, getting to know eachother more and more through their chaos and apparent growing hatred of eachother. In this story, both couples finally find their way, they just choose mirrored paths to get there. Second, you see it right here in this scene, where Tracy keeps trying to get him to see her as human, that's all she really wants, but he keeps seeing her as a goddess, a fantasy figure. Dexter *sees* her. He recognizes her humanity. When they were together before, he wasn't mature enough to get it right. They are both strong-willed arrogant, passionate people who would abuse *eachother* physically, mentally, and emotionally. Tracy couldn't stop being the high and mighty, judgemental goddess, and Dexter couldn't stop being the arrogant, rich, immature asshole (who couldn't handle her hypocritical judgements properly, and yes, did turn to drinking, a vice she's said she *really* doesn't like)... they both had issues to work out. The third thing is the class issue already mentioned. Mike and Tracy are both snobs with a bias against eachother when they first meet (a meeting involving two people lying to eachother from the start). He viewed her as too rich and (intellectually) tasteless, some dumb high-society betch who gets whatever she wants by walking over the backs of others; she viewed him as some lower class idiot who can't be trusted, because he's poor, and a writer, and so would only be there to leech off of her and her family. She ends up supporting him as a writer, finds it keen, but any gestures toward that support are seen as patronizing, because he doesn't like handouts, and besides verbal praise, that's the only thing she can offer (as he'd understand it). They get as long for one night... when they're drunk, and it's more about them both feeling lost, finding eachother, getting turned on by eachothers' intelligence and exposed vulnerability, plus the fact that they're both gorgeous 😅 But like Dexter even said, she'll conveniently forget any of it happened in the morning (which she did). OMG I love this movie and now I need to go watch it again 🤣🤣💕
honestly, as much as i agree that katharine hepburn had way more chemistry with jimmy stewart than cary grant in this movie, i think it would have fit the theme story much better for tracy lord to end up happily single. obviously that wasn't going to happen because of when this film was made, but tracy spends the entire movie surrounded by men who idealize and objectify her. she says it herself - she doesn't want to be seen as either a goddess or an ice queen but as a person, and i think a self-acceptance sort of ending would be much more appropriate if this ever gets a modern remake. but yeah stewart and hepburn are 🔥 here. these are two actors who could have chemistry with a paper bag, but together they're on another level.

Looks like that was all of 3 takes. Two of them long takes (the first one almost 2 minutes in length). I would imagine that only very fine actors are able to keep going like that, in full concentration.

Yes they are both amazing. But katherine even though owns a personal touch of how to be original, she didn't owe the charismatic beauty fo Grace Kelly. Katherine was beautiful too, but she wasn't a Goddess just like Grace is.. And then aside Stewart who was a real gentleman, ( he told Grace Kelly was the nicest lady he had ever met even though he worked with lot of others actresses) but i love particularly Cary Grant!!!
Critics told The Phil Story was better than High Society. I prefer the H Society. Sinatra made us heard a matchless voice, with beautiful performance too. Charisma!!! Crosby very talented too. The 2 of them were x most of people the biggest ones. I should enclose Great Nat King Cole and Dean Martin too. Then we have Tracy Lord played masterly by Grace Kelly the Goddess on the pedestall. She 's so cool, heavenly at the same time. A timeless beauty indeed, and she sang divinely True Love. Amazing
Good watch but Stewart should not have won best actor for this. It was only payback because he didnt win it the year before in "Mr Smith goes to Washington" and should have.
