In 2022, former FIRE intern Emma Camp’s New York Times op-ed about the speech culture at the University of Virginia sparked heated debate.
www.nytimes.co...
The piece detailed Emma's experience at UVA, which she said was characterized by “strict ideological conformity” instead of “intellectual diversity and rigorous disagreement.”
“From the start of Emma's time as a FIRE intern, I knew she would go places. Her commitment to free speech and enthusiasm for the work motivated everyone around her, and those qualities continue to shine through in her work today. I've been so proud to see Emma turn her passion into a career as an all-star journalist, exposing the wrongs of censorship to the world and calling on the public to stand up for free speech.” - Alisha Glennon, FIRE Chief Operating Officer
For speaking up about the unfortunate state of discourse on campus, Emma faced widespread criticism, but she refused to self-censor. Today, as an assistant editor at Reason Magazine, Emma is a fierce advocate for free speech in law and culture, exposing issues like invasive social media age-verification laws and opaque college speech restrictions.

School's teachers and staff should be as apolitical as possible during work hours. Their personal lives are their own.

It didn’t help that universities started explicitly endorsing political beliefs and commenting on current events

>Bad beliefs don't make you a bad person I would disagree there. Your (ought) beliefs are what you want. They are who you are. Are you really saying that someone who wants a society based on, for example, slavery is not a bad person? Come on.
