Herb Jeffries sings several of his classic hits including Duke Eillington's "Jump For Joy," Matt Denis' "Angel Eyes" and his trademark "Flamingo" in this rare 1983 TV appearance.
Impressive man, I played in a blues band called Dyrewolfe from 1993-2000 with his daughter/vocalist Ferne, she was an excellent singer as well. Herb came to one of our gigs and was going to sing a tune with us, but he had just come off the road and he said, "his pipes were shot", he was 85 years old! Sadly, Ferne passed away a week ago, cancer. RIP Ferne and Herb.
I met him at the home of friends of my parents one Sunday afternoon in Detroit in 1959. I was seven and was told about him. He was stopping over on his way to New York. A day or so later, we saw him on television.
Bless you for sharing this. Herb at his best. Check out Herb's original recordings with the famous Blanton/Webster version of the Duke Ellington band on RCA for the original "Flamingo." I love the way he enhances the midnight mood of Angel Eyes by simply undoing his tie. Master performer who didn't need much of anything in terms of theatrics--his voice was enough.
