Here’s how the Mercury Cougar tried to be more than a rebadged Ford 

My mom had a 1970 Cougar and she still talks about how much she loved that car.

I've always thought the original 67 Cougar was one of the best looking pony cars. My favorite of all the Cougars, by far.

I can't be the only one that thinks that the last generation cougar looks like a Mitsubishi Eclipse...

Ahh, the 1983 Cougar. I remember riding along in a test drive as a kid. My mother and I loved it, but my father liked the Chevrolet Celebrity. We ended up with the Celebrity, but my mother and I still talk about how nice the Cougar was.

1995 mercury cougar V8 was my first car. OMG did I love that damn car. I used to drift with it LOL. Great power and great handling. I had one with the spoiler, and I love the way that rounded squared-off styling looks. I'll never understand why people don't appreciate that beautiful car.

Man, that first generation Eliminator was a true piece of art. What a fantastic machine.

I wish Mercury were still around, the same for the Cougar, imagine a modern Cougar going back to being an upscaled Mustang, maybe using the current Mustang platform, so yeah

U are right when u said : if u mention Mercury ppl will think of the Cougar, that’s the only car I remember from them.

I had a 74 xr7 back in the early 90,s. It had the 460 engine but strangely enough was a column shift. No center console and floor shifter. They paid the money for the huge motor and the vehicle had a lot of options including the power moonroof, but was the only 74 XR7 that I ever saw without a console. It was a real powerful runner with astounding passing gear performance. I miss it, thanks for the video.

To this day, my dad talks about his '67 Cougar, which was yellow with a black vinyl top. His younger sister wrecked it and it's been with him ever since. It really carried a lot of cache as a brand and a car.

When I was a sophomore in high school, 1988-89, my buddy's Dad owned a '68 Cougar w/427 FE big block....one ride in that car made me LOVE big-block Ford's.....

I had 4 Cougars, one of the Fox, and three MN12. I absolutely loved these cars. Maybe I'll pick another one up one day when I have time to really take care of it.

When I was in grade school, my best friends parents had an 88 Cougar Special edition. It was black with copper pin stripes and special edition badging. 87/88 is my favorite as far as Cougars go.

I had a 78 XR7 about 20 years and it was in near perfect condition. Absolutely loved that car

My first car was a 2001 V6 Cougar with the manual transmission. Got it with 22 miles on it and sold it at about 96k. Loved it, it was a good handling car, just needed more power.

My folks had an 88 I believe. Mom called it her "pretty kitty." She loved that car, it was like we were rich when they bought it!

I had a 1970 cougar, red with a black vinyl top, cragar mags 351 cleveland engine when I was 19 years old 48 years ago. I loved that car. Think about it all the time.

In 1987 I bought a brand new Mercury Cougar LS. Beautiful burgundy red exterior and interior, V6. Loved that car.

I had a 77 cougar xr7 from 1985-90. I really enjoyed having it. Power door locks,windows, v8 and 8 track cassette!

My first car was a 1994 Dodge Colt ES, which i learned was a rebadged Mitsubishi - I believe the Mirage. I'd love to see those Mitsubishis that Chrysler had brought over under various names.

I had a 79 XR7, black with a sunroof. Then I bought an 84 XR7 Blue. I loved those two cars. I wish I had them today.

I had a 71XR7 convertible 351Cleveland. Kept it for 35 years. Great car.

Had a 83, 92, 95 loved them even know I was buying & selling cars at the time but 83 was my favorite out of these three

My first car was a 1971 Cougar (not the XR7) that was white with a blue half vinyl roof that I purchased in 1978 for $1200 with 52k miles on it. I had it repainted metallic dark blue and replaced the half vinyl roof with a lighter shade of blue. It had the 351 Cleveland engine with a 2 bbl carburetor and made 240hp. I then replaced the single exhaust with a dual exhaust turbo muffler system with a nice deep note. I took it to a local drag strip and it clocked 16.24 in the quarter mile at 88mph. I really miss that car. Thanks, for the video!

Interesting and retrospective I always like the cougars. My mom did some ads for Ford and she had an 83 cougar and it was actually a pretty nice car. Did you notice Farrah fawcett majors at 4:45 on the ad yep. She also did some ads for mercury. Thanks for the walk down memory lane . 👍👍👍

We had an 84. I loved that car and really wish we still had it.

I had 2 1984 Cougars (blew the motor on one, got another one right away) and then a 94 Tbird. The 84s were cramped with narrow footwells. The 94 redesign was much better and I really loved it. I was looking for an MN12 Cougar but the tbird popped up first so I got it. Strangely, my 84's were different. One had a vinyl roof, smooth tail lights, and I remember the turn signal stalk was a thicker, modern plastic stalk. It was a V8. The other one had a standard roof, louvered tail lights, a v6, and the turn signal lever was just a metal stick with a plastic end. But the V8 one didn't say XR7 on it anywhere. It was almost like the 84 was actually an early 85 or something. Never did figure it out. Also the V8 was a good looking two tone, blue over grey. It got a lot of compliments. My brother had an 87 Cougar, XR7 and it was gorgeous. Red over grey. The way the fenders were flared and the wide tires made it look very muscular. It looked great going down the road. More comfortable than the 84s but not as nice as the 94. Still, a great looking car.

I bought a 1977 Cougar as my first new car. I have a lot of fond memories and my son growing up in the back seat. I had the optional 400 C.I. engine, leather seats and turbine wheels. I loved that car. Thanks Pat for bringing back some fond memories.

My aunt had a white Mercury Cougar in Costa Mesa, CA in the 70's and I loved that car. It was so sleek and mean looking, yet classy. My uncle had a Ford LTD. That thing was a boat.

My gran had an 88 in Cabernet and then upgraded to a 96 in an iridescent purple/pink colour. I loved that 88!

My first car was a 1987 Mercury cougar 20th anniversary edition in excellent condition with only 59k miles on in for $3600. One of the best cars I ever owned.

The "88 XR-7 in monochromatic paint is one badass car.Available in 3 colors,they all came with V8 5.0 power with single exhaust leading to dual tailpipes.....Pretty rare when new....You don't see them at all now.....And they were all built at Fords world famous Lorain Assembly Plant in Lorain,Ohio.

I had a 71 XR7 with a 351c 2V/ automatic that rolled off the line with drum brakes all around. It was pretty clapped out when I got it, but I had fun with it, fixed a few things, added some minor performance parts, and drove it hard. It became further clapped out and I sold it for $100 less than I paid for it (original price of a lofty $500). It would run at least 120 mph, though. The 1974 model was the last year that customers could get a 351C 4V in any Ford, and was an option in the Cougar. I think they’re pretty rare and if I could one at a good price that wasn’t a rust bucket, I might try to drag it home. The supercharged Cougar/T-birds I found were actually fast, great handling cars. I ran a T-Bird SSC and really appreciated its performance, handling, and braking. They had four wheel discs when the Mustang 5.0s still had to live with rear drums. Heavier cars then the Stang so straight line wasn’t as quick, but great overall performance for the era. A friend who was pretty destructive to cars had an 89 Cougar XR7 with the supercharged 6, and couldn’t manage to destroy it like he’d done previously to a Camero. Nice overall video covering the Cougar.

The 1970 Cougar XR7 was a gorgeous vehicle... Had a great stereo system,, was very stylish ... I think this was the one with the taillights that pointed in the direction of whichever way you were going: Very Coooo00000l!

I owned a 1993 Cougar a 1984 Tbird 94 Tbird , a 95 Tbird and lastly a 1997 Tbird Southern States edition. I loved these cars.

I love the mid 70's to mid 80's performance cars. I had a 86 Thunderbird turbo couple with a 5speed. And I absolutely loved it. And to this day, i absolutely regret ever getting rid of my 85 Dodge Daytona turbo Z. And all the cars I've had before-and-after, nothing compares to how much I loved that little car.

I had a 1974 cougar xr7 that had been my older brother's. It was a creamy yellow with white leather upholstery and black plush carpet. It was a beast with a continental stock 461 4 barrel engine. It left everything in the dust and sucked gas like water.

I had an 85 xr7 as my first car turbo 4 with a 5 speed and just recently picked up a 73 xr7 convertible with a 351 Cleveland I loved having a cougar so much I wanted another one and I'm 36.

in 84 I took delivery of a new Cougar it was two tone grey with wire wheels, a great looking car.

We got a new Honda Civic in 1994 for my wife. She would get upset when I would take our 3 kids to the beach almost every weekend. So I found a 78 cougar on the cheap. For me and the kids to knock around in. We had so much fun in that car. Who cares if it smelled like the ocean or has a inch of sand in the carpet. Now everyone has grown up and has a family of their own. But when we get together that car is always mentioned just before big smiles and laughter breaks out.

3:19 The second generation 70s Mercury Cougar almost looks like an Edsel from the 70s with that vertical grille.

Had one too, 351 Windsor, all options except for sunroof. Had black leather twin comfort seats, standard hubcaps, whitewalls, in medium yellow with matching half landau top. First luxury car, loved the am/fm stereo radio with door speakers and rear ledge speakers.

My parents bought a new '87 XR7 in burgundy. Gorgeous car in it's day. I learned to drive on it. It's funny, I thought it was such a fast car as a kid, but its V8 had 150 horsepower. It was also amazingly horrible in snow!

Have owned many Everybody knocks 71-73, but there my favorite. They drive super. 351C power, can't be beat. Love them!

I always like the look of the eighties Cougars and preferred the upright roofline to that of the T bird.

I’ve owned a 1968 Cougar for 45 years. Drove it thru High School and College. Now in my new shop mancave and will be restoring. Zero rust body as I’ve had it in storage last 32 years.

When I was a young teenager my dad and I restored a 73 Cougar hardtop together as a father/son project. Ever since then I’ve loved the Cougar. Although my favorite is still the 89-97 model. That was a beautiful car in my opinion. I never liked the final generation Cougar that went front wheel drive with Mazda derived drivetrain. The late 70’s was a rough era too. The big cat kinda lost its way for a few years.

Thank you for doing a great job on the video. This one brought back memories. I remember the ones from 1977- 1979. Those sold well. They almost had a Lincoln Mark V look to them. I remember the others ones too especially the 80's and 90's models. I had a relative that owned a 1977-1979 Cougar XR7 and a early 1980's Cougar XR7 that was loaded and had digital gauges and more. A friend of mine had a 92 Thunderbird V8 a few years ago, at the same time I had a 95 Roadmaster myself. He was always so upset that I was faster then him despite weighing over 1000lbs more

Glad to see this put up! I currently have a 1968 XR7 model. The body is mostly stock but everything else has been upgraded. Stroked out 351w with an all MSD ign setup and a solid C4 transmission with a 9 inch rear with 370 gears. I've had the car coming up on 25 yrs. Bought it out of a field and put 25k miles on it with just a tune up on the original 302. This car has been very good to my family and will be passed on to my daughter in a few years.. Fitting because she was brought home from the hospital in this car after her birth.

I always had its big brother the TBirds but the 80s and 90s were its heyday. The few Mustang twins you see at shows always are head turners.

I had a 1994 Mazda MX6, pretty much the same car as the 94 Ford Probe, but the Mazda was a more classical look. Love to see a video on the MX6.

Very nice commentary and show case. One correction Mercury did not end in 2010 - they ended in 2011, as I have a 2011 Mercury Milan.

Had a white 73 with a Cleveland and a 78 XR7 with a Windsor. The 78 was my first car. You showed a example of mine. It was that dark blue with the tan wheels and tan vinyl top. Really was a good looking car. IMO lol.

Back in the early 80's I had a 1978 Cougar Sport Package. Beautiful car!

My first car was an 84 Tbird and my second was a 99 Cougar. I know that last gen Cougars get a lot of hate, but that car was fun to drive. The 2.5l 24v DOHC engine was a rocket and that car handled like it was on rails. Fun fact: that Cougar (at least the 99 model) was the only car to use that specific tire. I went to buy tires for it once, and when they called their supplier to check on availability, when they told him the size he said "you have a Mercury Cougar dont you".
