Body cameras have become a pillar of police accountability efforts over the last decade. And more recently, Black Lives Matter protests have resulted in countless captured moments of police violence for the public to scrutinize. But as recent research shows, the kind of footage captured can influence our opinions of police...in ways we may not even realize.
This video is part of a larger project at The Verge that looks at the power and consequences of filming police violence. Our other RU-vid channel investigates what can happen after witnesses hit record - check that out here: bit.ly/34KDO69

I believe "circle culture" causes a lack of perspective and understanding of people's views that are not within one's own circle. I am no expert on the matter. What seems clear is that this tend to reinforce believes that your social circle already believe in. Reminding me of confirmation bias. I can't help but notice that the written account gives a very transactional summary of the events: Person "A" was pulled out of the vehicle. It makes no mentions nor judgements of "the how" - how was person "A" pulled - was it quick? with force? a lot of force? a little? was it violent? aggressive? I'm not sure I'm convinced about the intention-attachment theory, but it seems obvious when you see the fuller account via the video footage, that you would understand more of the "how" and that "how" would inform the judgements for or against those carrying them out upon person "A"

Man, I cannot believe they left out the important detail with body cams is that the amount of just raw footage that is recorded has to be stored in police servers and the sheer amount of footage they have is building up way too fast and they don't have enough storage for all of it. Everyone wants police to be recorded at every second but nobody stops to think about how the footage is stored and the work that goes behind body cams. On top of that, there are other problems like forgetting to turn on the body cams since it's a fairly new implement in normal duties, body cams are pretty expensive, and other problems that go into it. The Verge didn't really go into detail about what actually goes on with body cams other than they record what police do which is obvious. I get that people want to know what actually takes place when police are at work, however, this is a new technology for them, and especially with the defunding of the police isn't gonna help either in this situation. The bottom line is that it would be nice to have more information and to see what takes place but the cost for that is not cheap by an means and I want people to understand it's not that simple to have body cams for police.

Police are just now getting body cameras because the rise of police brutality. The type of cameras they use only shows a small glimpse of whats actually happening and can be turned off and on anytime the officer wants. Police bring in a lot of money from tax payers and government grants, most of the time it isn't spent in a way to help the people they swore to protect and serve. They would rather spend it on things like nice buildings, military gear, military vehicles, riot gear, and new vehicles but when you talk to them about getting body cameras they say "It isn't in the budget or its to expensive". What all police need is a 360 degree camera on both vehicle and person to show the whole picture and what really happens. Another thing, when its your word vs a cops word courts shouldn't hold the cops word over your own. We live in an age of technology so why not invest in that tech for all peoples sake. Police need to show the arrest from start to finish on video or should have witnesses to testify or the charges should be dropped due to no evidence.

Terrifying. Our valiant Law Enforcement officers, posing more of a threat to public safety than the people they're attempting to arrest and charge. It's terrifying, and infuriating. That people who clearly can't remain calm under pressure, and act professionally at all times are trusted with a badge and a gun, in our society. I'm not saying they don't have a dangerous job. Of course they do. But everybody knows that, especially them, going in. What's expected of them while performing those duties should be the FIRST, and most fundamental lesson in their training process. Which it's so obviously not, not yet, anyway. This is change happening, what's going on across the Country, (and around the World,) right now. It's painful, and often gets much worse before ultimately getting better, but with the right clarity of vision and priority maintenance it WILL get better. That's based on everything we've learned throughout history, we've only ever changed for the better this way, from the ground up. ✌

I need context. I dont just judge what is happening through one single viral clip. I've seen dozens if not hundreds of viral clips that were later debunked and showed that what the media portrayed was incorrect. This video has no context of the arrest, and so I will not judge if the officer involved was in the wrong or in the right. Instead I would use it as to see what the officer sees the situation as. A bystander may not see a person reach for a weapon but the officer may recgonize the movement. OR the officer may just be going on a power trip. Having the body cam helps in understanding the situation, but will never be the only source. I think what the study shows is just how different ways of portraying stuff can lead to different results. That is the reason why people should not be fired just from one video but rather through a strict process. (PS you cannot say that a police report carries misinformation without showing us the video you mentioned. I cannot tell if you just said that as an example or if its something real. I feel that there are a lot of valid points in the video, but for that one case used as an example, there was only one side of the information provided. I do not have video or statements about what happened before. The only statements given were classified as lies by the video, so I wish that the video would provide the accurate description of what happened before the footage was captured.)

Decent video, but I couldn't look past the irony- at face value it seems to be presenting this information in an objective manner, I mean even the channel has "Science" in the name which implies a level of objectivity. The message is about how perspective in footage changes our opinions on what happens in the footage. It seems to favor and increase in objectivity due to the increased availability of empirical data (which would align with a scientific approach). That being said, here are the big issues: 1) there's emotional music being played in the video. The effect of music being played with emotional situations can drastically alter the way we perceive it, which is boosting subjectivity over objectivity in this video and; 2) there are (albeit limited) interviews giving the verbal perspectives of the students involved. There are no interviews with the law enforcement officers or their representatives involved. Again, this (presumably intentional) move decreases the objectivity of this video and increases the subjectivity as we're literally only getting one side of the story. If we have a large demographic associating this type of video with objectivity, it's no wonder there are riots in the streets.

Body cameras should be worn by more than just police officers. They should be worn also by kids in school so that they can turn in bullies (including adults in some cases). If everyone wore cameras we could also reduce the punishments needed to deter crimes, and criminals charged with light crimes could be let free. You could also help get drug pushers, abusive police officers, corrupt officials, abusive "lovers" into accountability. The police are outnumbered and expensive so if we can make it so that we need them less it would be great, I'd volunteer to live in a community where everyone had body cameras even although I know I'm not perfect because it helps bring accountability to everyone.

Doctors are required to have personal insurance in case they injure someone. The same should be said for cops. No insurance, no job, no exceptions. That is the way it should be. Also, if you get fired by one department you should never be able to be hired by any other department in the entire country ever again. Lack of personal accountability in bolden's bad behavior. When the taxpayer is paying the settlement for a cop's bad behavior the cops do not feel the consequences of their actions. Make it so any lawsuit comes out of the officer's personal pocket and watch how fast they start behaving themselves.

Lol this video isn't actually all that political. It basically just explains the psychology of video footage and how it changes opinions. You can apply this same theory to other situations e.g. use of video cam in football, domestic violence, car crashes etc.
@jammaschan

Maybe some people are too quick to draw conclusions from a few seconds of footage and also stick to a single video. Granted not everyone is interested in looking for the whole picture of every single event that come to the news and will take the time to piece together the events from several sources (which even nowadays can take a lot of time) but then they'll have to remember their understanding of the situation is lacking and incomplete.
