Depending on the caliber, you might indeed hear it due to the gasses produced by the combustion of the powder. Some of the sound would also be transmitted from the gun to your hands. It wouldn't be very loud, but there would almost certainly be a sound. Someone a couple feet away would probably not hear anything though.

It would be very difficult to hold the gun at your precise center of mass, which is what you'd need to do to not start spinning. The further from your center of mass you hold the gun, the more spin, and the less linear movement.

Yes the bullet can fire in space. The powder from bullets is sealed inside the case (airtight and watertight), also the powder has oxygen chemically binded in its molecular structure. The fire cap needs only mechanical shock to explode, no oxygen. No, the bullet will absolutely NOT hit you. In orbit, if an object has greater speed than you, it also means it has a higher orbit. If you fire the bullet forward, it will go faster than you (obviously) relative to an observer, and also higher. If you fire the bullet backwards, it will go into lower orbit. So in the Space Shuttle, when they wanted to go back to earth, first they decelerated by firing the boosters at the nose of the ship, lowering the orbit till they were inside the upper atmosphere, and from that point the friction of the atmospere kept the deceleration without the nose bousters.Then it was a matter of flying or rather gliding to earth. Now, you can imagine the difficulty of docking to the space station.
@Boba0514
@Boba0514 5 лет назад
This is a pretty good explanation, but I've gotta note that the space shuttle actually used it's main engines for the deorbit burn: they rotated tail-first into the direction of travel for some time, then back again for the most epic glide of human history :D

@MetallicReg
@MetallicReg 7 лет назад
Paul Geyer You forget that it is already orbiting with the gun and the person shooting it. Depending on the direction you shoot it, it will orbit with 16000-19000 mph in the orbital range you described. However, there is nearly no chance to hit the shooter again.
@datbootyraptor642
@datbootyraptor642 6 лет назад
Would be a shame if it actually would hit you
@FinBoyXD
@FinBoyXD 6 лет назад
Paul Geyer Well, it depends on the distance to earth. For example the moon orbit the earth only at 2,288 mph. You have to go to at about 481,190 miles from earth (which is still 0.5% the distance from earth to sun). Then you could shoot it into orbit without being in orbit yourself. But most likely you would already be in orbit, so it would just either increase the speed or decrease it. I'm not sure if its possible to shoot it into orbit from the orbit because the bullet needs lower speed if its distance increases and higher speed if it decreases. It could just find the right spot but I bet it would be at least a bit elliptical. It will probably drop to the ground, it cant escape the gravity though.

Space battles would be annoying. One minute you are shooting at any enemy then bam, three months later a random torpedo takes out a colony on some distant planet and you are charged with it.

Pretty sure you will hear a boom of some kind as the sound waves travel through the gun onto your suit, and into you..

most modern day bullets would fire since they have oxidizers to prevent not being able to fire if they fell in water or something that would stop it from being able to breath
