Retired mechanic here. Love you videos! Think about this. Even though the AC isn't used in winter there are 2 potential problems with the bad clutch bearing. On some vehicles the AC is engaged when defrost is selected to dehumidify the air and if the bearing locks up it could destroy the belt. Number 2 is even though the clutch isn't engaged in winter on cars that don't engage AC during defrost part of it is still spinning and it could seize up and destroy the belt.

I've had really good luck with compressors in junk yards. It's 50/50 if they work but it's usually OEM equipment and there's almost always a pretty good selection at a junk yard. Find the lowest mile car with the nicest belt and you can pretty confidently assume that compressor will treat you better than a hokey pokey rebuilt unit.

The bearings in my alternator on an old chevy s10 p/u started whining. Mechanic said don't worry about it - it will just get louder and louder. Within a week, on the highway the bearings seized up, the belt caused so much friction going around on a stopped pulley, that it caught fire and thrashed around and the melting rubber caught the sound deadening material on the underside of the hood on fire, and the rest of the truck went up too on the side of the highway. Not a good day. Huge plumes of black smoke. Goodbye truck.

Good vid Scotty. Some cars have a different length serpentine drive belt for non air conditioned models so you might be able to get away with running a non A/C belt and skipping the A/C pulley.I know in Australia I can do that with my Commodore if I need to as the A/C doesn't work anyway. Hey Scotty, in some of our Aussie cars, if that belt shreds, it can stop the engine. This is because the crank sensor is behind the crank pulley. The belt shreds, & some of it jams in behind the crank pulley, & stops the sensor reading the gaps in the pulley, thus preventing the ignition system firing the plugs.

I live on the east coast and I use my a/c in the winter to dehumidify. I would probably use a/c in Houston in the winter, too. Also, I would replace the clutch only. It's cheaper and the a/c system isn't cracked open. The car also has 226k miles on it.

I have a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis and the AC has never been serviced and it works great. I try to run it even in winter on a warmer day to circulate the freon. I've heard many stories of ACs going bad because they're barely used. You need to circulate that freon to keep the lubricity in the system flowing and o-rings from cracking.

My only issue with winter coming around the corner is the ac compressor will kick on with the defroster to help remove moisture from the air so you dont have a tone of condensation on the windshield would recommend fixxing the compressor before it failes to help avoid other issues. I would agree with not repairing but replacing the whole unit unless you can find a complete rebuild kit for a cheaper.

Unit replacement. But you can also get a shorter belt and bypass the AC compressor entirely. If you can handle to heat. Udderwise, and don't have cow, you'll just have to pay. You also can get parts at the self-service wrecking yard, if you can install them yourself. that's what I'd do.

If it was me i would have just bought a shorter belt that came for without A/C and been fixed until summer came back and worry about it then . So if the ac compressor started to screw up I wouldn't have the customer coming back to me for a AC complaint again of it either locked up all the way or it's making terrible noise and would need to be fixed again and then him charged for another repair . I just fix it the first time since it was already making a noise and had play in it .

I had a 2003 Corolla and I had to replace that stupid belt every 2 years because of its faulty design. As you can clearly see, it only makes contact with the top of the grooves on the pulleys, hence it starts to slip as soon as there's even just slight wearing of it (especially audible on rainy humid days). Usually, multiple V belts are supposed to make contact on the sides of the grooves on a pulley, not just the top.

I have an old car that did that. Ignored it until one day the AC compressor just seized and snapped the belt. Fortunately that car has two fan belts, one for the AC and power steering, the other for the alternator and water pump. So I wasn’t stranded. But on some other cars that could have been bad.

Scotty is great will the practicality of repair decisions. It's how I do things with self repair & my jobs reliant on vehicle use. Shops will say to fix something at the slightest flaw. But most things aren't going to fail dangerously & you don't extra selling value at the end by having changed stuff twice vs. once. You might as well wear the part out fully if you want less expense. My AC clutch made noise when cold for years before failing. It didn't product AC anyway so I disconnected the electrical connection. When the pulley started jumping around & kicking sparks, it was done. I put in a bypass pulley at that point.

My brother had to do the same repair on his Saturn and his wife's Toyota on the same weekend. It took him minutes to do the GM product, but Toyota was a different story. Of course, my brother isn't a professional mechanic, who doesn't get paid on the hourly rate. I'm thinking mechanics like working on Toyotas, because it takes longer to do anything, and that means they spend more time for doing what they're paid to do, rather than writing up receipts and staging customers' cars.

My mothers (late grandmothers) 220,000 kilometre (136,702 mile) 2000 model Toyota AE112R Corolla which is Australian built had a noisy clutch bearing because she decided that she would try to drive it through 1-2 metres deep flood water in 2014. That meant that we had to go & pick her & my sister up after the state emergency services had to row a boat out to the car & rescue them. The car was sitting in the water until the next afternoon when we towed it out after the water subsided a bit,it couldn't even be jump started & I found it needed a replacement ECU & airbag module, the battery also needed to be recharged. I soldered a bridging piece onto the positive terminal inside the ECU which had eroded away & the engine did start & it was driveable but the check engine light glowed which is why I ordered another ECU - it was water damaged. My brother & father shampooed the seats & carpet after they ripped all of that out. What I noticed not long after my mother started driving it is there was a noise coming from under the bonnet when the air conditioner was switched off but it went away after it was switched on. I ordered a new air conditioner clutch bearing for it ,fitted it & it has been quiet ever since, the old bearing became rusted & pitted which caused it to be noisy as it was sitting in the water for about 18 hours !

Scotty I see you puting car Jack under front subframe, which is big no no as I red in few workshop manuals, I am driving 500 euro cars and the bottom is always abused from incorrect lifting Jack placement. Could you make video about proper way to lift car, where is safe spot (for car and mechanic) to place jack etc.. Love your videos and your view on buying new cars.

We used to have informal races, at the dealership, to see who could install factory a/c systems, on brand new Nissans. The whole kit. Most of us could have em on and charged in a couple hours. Ahh, those were the days.

The compressor bearing went out on my old Acura integra and almost caught on fire on the highway. I pulled over and it was smoking like crazy. Luckily the car used accessory belts instead of a serpentine belt so all I had to do is cut the compressor belt off. It sucked driving in Florida during the summer without AC though.

In my 04 GTO, the AC has its own belt. If my AC compressor goes bad, it's not a big deal to get it fixed immediately. My car can run fine without the AC.

I got the same issue going on with my 2001 sienna the belt is new so i kinda knew that it was the ac compressor pulley making screaming noises. But it eventually goes away after the engine warms up no biggie I can live with a little noise rather than spending 500 bucks for a new ac compressor.

I had to have my AC compressor replaced in my Impala a few months ago. AC Compressor, Freon and new belt ran me about $650. More than a few people told me I got a good deal on that. I was also smart enough not to get a used or rebuilt compressor. I asked online and everyone told me that rebuilt ones are garbage. And since I know rebuilt alternators are garbage, I figured t was probably the same with compressors.

I'm a cheapskate. Twice I fixed the compressors on my Saab 1990 9000 CD, and 1997 9000CSE, by fixing where they leaked freons, the front and the rear covers, of the compressors, with new seals and dabs of gasket sealants. These lasted long enough for me without the clutches and the bearings going bad in those years. The key was to do vacuum suck-out and replacing lube oils in the system.

Unfortunately even though winter is coming and the A/C wont be used. When you turn on defrost mode on almost any vehicle. The compressor still kicks on for some strange reason. Even with the heater on.

if you don't want to fix the ac, a shorter belt to bypass the compressor works. You just got to look up what length belt u need..

I see these videos and think about how lucky I am with my 3800 in a rear wheel drive car. You can see the ground on all three sides! Remove the radiator and thermos, and you can stand inside the engine bay. So much working room it may as well be an engine bay for a Model T. They've also had autotensioners forever, since the late 80s at least, I believe.

It should break every 500 just like a mercedes, perfect for a DIYer, you spend your spare time fixing it.
