I've been struggling with short forehands a lot, trying different things to improve this area of my game. But I've never thought about this! Can't wait to go on court and try this tip, hope it will fix my short forehands. Great video!

It’ll 100% help your forehand. Stay farther away and you’ll have the space for your arm and racket to fit between you and the ball.

So...I have this drill I use for serving that creates effortless power...in the drill, I NEVER even try to get the ball in the box as it interferes with the purpose of the drill...I'm just allowing my arm to fly out of control...Once I've hit around 30+ with that motion, then I serve to spots inside the service box. It's cranked up an already powerful serve by 5-10 mphs. I think I may try to develop a forehand drill using the same mentality...get the arm moving loose and free FIRST, then worry about getting it in. Sometimes, I think we learn this game backwards...maybe we should learn the most effective way to get the ball to explode off of the racket...then bring it into the court.
@2MinuteTennis

That’s a drill I use with my students all the time. Learn speed first. Then learn to control that speed. Thanks!!

If you turn around and swing in a good position to hit, you can stroke in a stable position, but the opponent can know the direction of the ball in advance, so you didn't turn around to not know whether to stroke it to the left or to the right.

Isn’t this likely because he is used to a righty spin which would move slightly to the right, but he’s playing a lefty, which moves slightly to the left, spinning towards him?
@dlamish
@dlamish Год назад
I agree. It’s more because the lefty spin got him and cramped him. Analysis seems a bit awry here
@satjiwan
@satjiwan Год назад
I think this is an experienced player who would normally space properly. In the video it’s a slight mishit resulting in short ball and inside out backhand from the lefty. So yes he’s jammed. But more likely bc he’s surprised about spin. I do believe the spacing analysis - that for a higher ball, you should be further away - is about right.
@pikaioh7056
@pikaioh7056 Год назад
@@satjiwan Right, the principle that he’s too close is the same. However, he might not have made the error of being too close because he’s taking the ball up higher, therefore he needs to be further away because of the radius of his arm (which is what they are saying less experienced players do). He just got jammed from the spin.

I am not sure, but I think I saw a slight misbounce to the left, right where the player was standing. But that is the point somehow. When the ball comes right to me I tend to just stand and let it come. No motion whatsoever, No chance for adjustments. Error source no 1 for me.

Being crunched might not be optimal, but it's not the reason for dumping that shot to the net. Many players do hit with a bent arm, like most WTA players. That shot went to the net because his head wasn't still for that shot. My coach used to tell us if you saw your shot going to the net, then that's why. Your head had moved too soon.

I thought the same thing at first. I watched it again and again. I watch the opponent hit the ball and saw no way that side spin what imparted to make it do that. After I looked enough times I came to the conclusion that the bounce was fine and not to the side. The player’s response also indicated that he messed up and not that it was a bad bounce.

Ryan, you don’t like when coaches teach continental grip for volleys and I am totally agree with you, but why you teach same thing which doesn’t work on high balls??? You need to hit high balls more in front of you rather then hit it from side.
@2MinuteTennis
@2MinuteTennis Год назад
I don’t understand you continental grip reference, but…standing farther away from the ball is vital to a good high ball contact. Yes, contact in front. But players struggle on high balls bc they get too close.

That's so obvious. Why is this the first time I've ever heard anyone say that? The physical length of your arm... That's probably a common mistake then on a lot of shots... So then I guess on a really low ball you'd have to get closer to it, for same reason?
