When he said Americans being terrified of tiny European roads i just picture how funny itll be with an American being terrified driving down that road in Taddiport in a big RAM 1500.
It's more terrifying if the American ISN'T terrified, but drives at 55 mph (national speed limit in US) which is 88.5 kph. He won't even see oncoming traffic, but will run over it.
I'm surprised how ingrained the nature of traffic is in my psyche, once you've got your license, I got mine at least 15 years ago and I don't drive regularly, but every single picture of traffic, from my perspective, in the wrong side of the road, immediately gave me intense anxiety.
I mean if you go anywhere with any sort of traffic, whether driving or not, you become accustomed to it from the time you're able to notice things and retain them.
Thanks for keeping the quality down to snuff! We don't come here for the fancy graphics and editing. We come to hear you say 'Helloouu. I'm Toycat' And woocum back to the second channel video.' But you know what? Second channel. Don't care.
I was worried about this channel improving the content, but this video reassured me that some genuinely bad content would still make it through. Keep up the ...bad work.
14:30 They are narrow because they were former dirt tracks and they were converted for motor uses, and just try acquiring land to widen it, it's a uphill battle.
I actually was on the m4 earlier today after returning from LHR (I do admit I went planespotting) Also as a matter of fact, at 2:43 you mentioned there is a plane, which is the worlds largest commercial airliner, the Airbus A380 - It seems to be BA. One thing I should also add, is look at Hanger Lane, If I am not mistaken at some points it can reach 9 lanes, and it still gets extremely busy and there can be major traffic on the a406
You haven't seen the magic roundabout, that is the hell for non local drivers. I'm a 19 y.o driver from London, went somewhere through the magic roundabout and almost pissed. The Magic roundabout is in Swindon.
I've looked at it on google street view and it looks absolutely insane, how do people actually get through that shit? Wouldn't it make more sense to just make a big normal roundabout instead? It's like they're asking for accidents
@@zoutepindas6128 it actually started as a conventional roundabout but then it got overloaded with traffic, so it was turned into the junction we have today, which is really just 5 mini-roundabouts linked together. It actually handles traffic a lot better than a normal roundabout.
@@ninesquared81 It looks like a pain in the ass to understand where you're going. Also, these mini roundabouts you have in Britain are ridiculously small. How would you even drive a van around that shit without cutting?
@@zoutepindas6128 The Magic Roundabout is, by all accounts, easy to use and very safe. Cars move slowly, and follow local rules. Forget about the big system, and just look at the mini roundabout you're currently on. It works. (See the Tom Scott video for more.)
This reminds me of New Jersey. When I moved there from Texas it was weird how businesses are just RIGHT on the highway. No exiting, just turning right into some place after going 60-70mph. I don’t miss it
I live near one of the UK's shortest motorways, 1 junction between the 2 ends and the junction is just an industrial estate, the way it ends is literally a relatively small roundabout, and before work was done to 'complete' the motorway, this roundabout didn't even exist - only sliproads (there was just a void of motorway, as it was originally intended to go much further than it does). M606
Roundabouts are the best option if the roads leading into it have low enough traffic that the roundabout can fit all of it at once. As soon as the sum traffic on the roads leading in is more than the capacity of the roundabout, ALL of the roads leading in will backup and come to a standstill. When there are no gaps left in the traffic in the roundabout, traffic entering has to come to a complete stop, which then means they need a bigger gap to enter than if they were merging at speed. This then makes the roundabout worse than a 4-way stop in terms of traffic flow. So when that happens, the logical solution is to turn it into a traffic light controlled intersection. Traffic lights impose gaps in each direction of traffic and thus allow all directions to flow at a metered rate. In places where it is predicted that traffic will increase beyond a roundabout's, capacity it makes more sense to save the cost in both money and land to just not build them. (There are lots of Cities Skylines RU-vidrs who debate the fine points of this argument, if you want to go down that rabbit hole.)
Oh I just love it when Toycat tries to look something up in the map desperately to prove a point, but fails miserably! 🤣🤣 Also, when he sees something strange instead, and is so intrigued by it and then goes on to ramble about it, to the point that his original conversation is now completely incoherent. This is exactly the bottom-barrel content that I whole-heartedly love! 💕
There's a row of streets in my city named after the Middle East: "Palestine Street", "Jerusalem Street", "Damascus Street", "Cairo Street"... I live in Belfast, ages away from the Middle East. Still no idea why they're named that way
Coming from the Tesla community here, I love that video. Self driving cars will have an insanely hard time in Europe. That video can be the start of a funny series. I have some funny ones on Switzerland too.
The flyover at 6:20 is just one directon, because (if I read the map before it in the video right) it conects two exits next to each other. The opposite direction of the flyover doesn‘t need to change level, because you have no conflict except padestrian if you just add a lane on ground level. The direction of the flyover would cross the other exits of the roundabout if it was just an additional lane.
I enjoy driving but there is no way I would own a car if I lived in London. It's too slow, expensive and stressful. I've driven through London a few times recently, and it's always such a relief to leave the boundry of the M25.
Oh thank you. I've come so accustomed to the high quality of this channel. Glad to see it at same level as it always is When one goes on holiday, it best to travel light. It nice to have a Pub near by.
@Toycat, you should checkout the roads in Hamilton county Indiana. They have the most roundabouts in the US and even celebrated National Roundabout week last September. They also have a road where you drive on the left to avoid left hand turns that cross traffic.
16:30 - my town has a few residential streets this narrow, and I find they're some of the most pleasant streets to exist on precisely because the cars are forced to go very slowly
19:36 that's a stack exchange, named so, because it needs 4 levels of roads. A cloverleaf interchange has 4 loops for left turns (right turns for the UK) and is the most basic system interchange out there. You know, highway/motorway interchanges are a quite interesting topic to talk about, especially when you get to something like the diverging diamond service interchange or the braided system interchange... or the single-point urban interchage... honestly, I like them all. Well except the cloverleaf, that one sucks.
We don't have diverging diamonds over here to the best of my knowledge. Most Irish motorway junctions are two small roundabouts and a single bridge, instead of one big roundabout. The traffic doesn't justify the expense of two bridges.
A not too dissimilar example of the first thing - where a highway runs off into a city and there are driveways - happens in Vancouver! If you look where Highway 99 runs through Richmond heading north, it’s a proper highway. It crosses a bridge, and suddenly becomes a neighbourhood with million dollar houses and driveways and stuff 😅
About the M4 - America has that all over the place - usually not residential but other zoning on major arterial roads, sometimes derogatorily called "stroads" (portmanteau of street and road)
I can't remember if you showed this before but show everyone the Katy Freeway. This is a section of Interstate 10 (I-10) between Texas Hwy 6 in Katy TX to Interstate 610 (I-610 or West Loop) in the western portion of Houston TX. I believe the widest portion has up to 26 lanes of traffic with at least half of the lanes bumper to bumper for several hours a day. You could make a full video on this freeway alone and how it's a perfect example of induced demand. Even the Wikipedia page for induced demand has a picture of the Katy Freeway
Well, it’s “tomorrow” today and I’m loosing faith in your words. I had an ok day at work and I agree that living in a place where you can walk anywhere easily is great and that’s what I experience every time I go to work.
Well, the NSL simply means that it's derestricted (not having a set speed limit sign), but it doesn't mean obviously you must tear down a one-track road doing 60, not if you value your life and others.
When you zoomed into Los Angeles you zoomed into the busiest junction of highways in the whole city perhaps even the country, the East LA interchange! It’s not much to boast about though, especially given the history of the freeways in Los Angeles. That little neighborhood is known as Boyle Heights, in the 1960s it was sliced up with freeways. They weaved together 4 freeways with 3 interchanges in a neighborhood of around 17 square kilometers. Officials at the time destroyed the city’s most diverse neighborhood despite heavy protest. Meanwhile, the affluent areas had the rich folk complain one time and their neighborhoods were spared. History did not favor Boyle Heights :(
To be fair the A1 in NI is horrifying, 70mph main road that is basically a motorway with none of the safety and a lot of essentially just roads with left turns onto it without any sliproad or anything
I woke up at like 11am with huge hangover and spend all day traveling to my home and making stops at varius foodchains to try calm my tummy ache. After which i vomited, luckuly home. And then spend some qulity time watching at roads i have never seen i country where ive been twice. Also got haircut by my frind :)) Very,, very productive day.
I guess that's the downside of creating rural pathways before cars existed, then trying to turn them into car paths. Our rural roads are much more likely to be at least 1.5 cars wide, usually 2 to 2.5.
I am very glad that the budget for this episode did not exceed 23¥. I was getting worried that the quality of videos was getting too high, and no, I will not tell you about my day
The key to transport is options. Here in Detroit, where the car is king, people have been agitating for decades for more options, and all we’ve managed to bring about is a downtown looping elevated tram, and a 3.3 freedom unit main drag street car. BTW, you should visit Detroit (Sept/Oct is best). Easily the most interesting place in the US.
Check out the Clitterhouse Estate next to Brent Cross…. My friend used to play on the clitterhouse playing fields growing up, lol…. Apparently a clitterhouse is a place where you bake clay
The first road is not a motorway at that point, it’s one of the 1930s era arterial roads with 6 lanes that are the main roads out of London. Some other cities also have similar roads
Today I had a friend over after I was at a pot luck. It was sandwich themed and there were all different kinds of meat. Some of them had maonays on them and I didn't like those as much but the lettuse helped out a bit.
I woke up watched an Arcane episode because I’m late on trends as usual, ate breakfast at 10:30 and made fish tacos with mango- and lime salsa together with my parents and my sister. There you go toycat, happy now?
Huh, I live right by that square wide roundabout, walked on it today! The flyover (as everyone calls it) is fun... the buses (53) go on it too, top deck is fun. "A201", aka Old and New Kent Road, the only way people in South Bermondsey get to anywhere fancy...
22:30. I remember when local politicians in my city cut all transport to the city center during Pride. There was also and independent system but that one got easily blocked by police cars (brt)
Who doesn’t love dumpster diving for content?! I also actually lolled at 20:05. Maybe I’m just a dumb American but is the most famous intersection in London not the one at Abbey Road??
My day was good, I had an orchestra performance, it went very well. Today was also the first school day in Germany, so it was ok, teachers are good (I'm 11.grade)
