The look of concentration/confusion on Dennis’ face as he struggles to perform with the sequencer on the high hat is priceless. This almost works as an episode of Twilight Zone…😮
The hate from Beach Boy fans is bizarre but expected. Most of them hate disco and dance music whether it grooves or not. This was a good track and wasn't overdone like KC or The Hustle.
Never heard this song before, the sound is so unlike them What really surprises me above everything else is that they didn't sing live when we all know how great their voices were.
This song was just a demo I believe, I don't think the disco version was ever officially released, though it could have been as a single possibly. I had the demo album gifted to me, and it was signed by the entire band. It was marked "demo" and was blue translucent plastic. I wish I still had it!
This, in retrospect, is brilliant. True, no one liked it much at the time, but now 45 years later it’s actually AWESOME and needs to be added to every live DJ routine.
Awesome performance! The dancers were excellent.... no splits, no flips, no tricks, just good all-around dancing! Just like we remember... good old days for sure! 👍🏻 Happy Friday 🥳 Thank you for sharing! 💖
It was a hit on the dance floors here in Copenhagen in 1979 💃🪩growing up with the Beach Boys (my elder siblings had all their records) I, at that time being so young, thought it was incredible cool that these “old” guys could do disco 🕺🏽 I love all their periods ❤ period!
Exactly - one of The Beach Boys' great strengths is the diverse genres they've worked in - and often were decent. And they always did better on the other side of the pond, especially given the love of dance and electronic music in European markets.
O.M.G. As a serious fan of their music (post Pet Sounds) this is….IDK. So bad it’s good? Hilariously unintentional? Dennis looks confounded, but mostly just seeing Al Jardine with the moves! Carl keeping a straight face. This is a great 3 minutes or so, on sooo many levels🤭😆 Beach Boys history.
That would be Surf's Up. A ballad, with epic overtones, and with a singalong coda (Child Is The Father of The Man in Surf's Up, the Na-na-na-nas in Hey Jude)
I prefer the Wild Honey version but this isn’t all that bad if I’m being honest. Maybe if the album had a 7 minute edit instead of the 11 minute one I would like it more but it definitely doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets.
There's a good way to do disco, and a bad way to do disco. The Rolling Stones with the song 'Miss You' is a disco song done right. 'Here Comes The Night' is disco done wrong. It's too overblown.
The Beach Boys episode of Midnight Special was one of the group’s best TV appearances. It had great performances of Surfin USA, Good Vibrations, Rock & Roll Music (with Roger McGuinn on guitar), Lady Lynda, and Angel Come Home. But THIS is the one you decide to upload???😂
As a fan of the Beach Boys, i blame this mess on Bruce Johnston and Carl Wilson. The late 70s and most of the 80s were not kind to the band, unfortunately.
The blame really belongs to producer, Curt Boettcher. The original Here Comes the Night wasn't that big of a hit when released in '67, but this is just an abomination - an insult to both the Beach Boys AND disco.
Or how about it was a great effort and sounded very good. Whether you like it or not is completely subjective, but the only reason a lot of Beach Boy fans hate it is because of their disdain for disco and dance music. I'm a both a huge BB fan and dance music fan (though not so much of disco because of its overdone "Do The Hustle" hits). Additionally, while record sales and general popularity were not kind to The Beach Boys during the 70's and 80's, some of their best work came from those eras, so THEY were doing well - the public's poor perception? Not so much. The public was distracted by newer acts - a lot of which were fantastic as well, but people should've kept listenning to The Beach Boys, too.
I saw the BeachBoys in 1977 in Liverpool England. I also saw their 50th Anniversary at the Albert Hall London. I love everything including this. Diverse and brilliant ❤️
@@JoshHumble Good comment. I always liked the song. It's good disco and still sounds like The Beach Boys. It's not a sell-out. Too late to the party I guess. I'd like to hear a mix of the 9 minute instrumental version with more vocals added but no Carl Wilson verses. There's a lot to enjoy in both the singles and the longer versions.
The lead track from The Light Album. I always liked this version of their song, but I never had a problem with disco. Another great song from this album was "Good Timin'".
A lot of people don’t know this but when these guys first started out they didn’t have a name for their band. But their skeptical first agent told them to, “Go pound sand!” That inspired their now-famous name. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.
Just awful... and I grew up on the BB in the 70's and love there entire songbook. I give em credit for trying to be hip at the time and trying a disco song.
At the risk of howls of indignation from the purists, for my money, this 1979 remake of Here Comes The Night has the decisive edge over the Beach Boys' earlier version on their 1967 Wild Honey album. Their harmonies absolutely SOARED here, especially in that cresendo at the end. Absolute, utter perfection.
This was freaking awful. There is no way the Beach Boys thought this was good. Record companies were always trying for a quick score on the latest trend.
