Is this the guy that made the riff to ‘Fly Like an Eagle’ and ‘Dark Hours’ with his band sometime in the 70s? First heard of his music in Mindhunter on Netflix as a 2000s kid. Great artist.
I'm 65. I was there last night with my 37 year old daughter. I knew every word of The Joker. I told my daughter, "I wore out my copy of Fly Like An Eagle in the 70s."
This was my husband's and daughter Lacey song. I sure miss you Willie 4/15/62- 3/9/2011 13 years have gone by fast. Thanks for sharing MUSIC with our children Jenci, Lacey and Trevor. I love you.
Props to John Mayer for letting the moment flow and letting Steve Miller be the focal point. I used to not like John Mayer but I have great respect for him as an artist.
Love how Mayer told Miller "GO!" But Miller just kept playing rhythm so Mayer filled it in! Then Mayer's joy when Miller jumped back in with the lyrics! Mayer's face said it all! Music is so great!!!!
I was noting the same thing. The way he left it open for him but then picked it back up when he saw he wasn't going to go for it. You could see the joy John had playing with him though.
Miller is playing a tiny 12 string, not a solo instrument, but he is doing some cool stuff for his turn. Then John comes in with something playful and original, a perfect counterpoint that takes it to another level, then Steve’s voice takes us even further. Six minutes of pure joy.
I just have to say how blessed I feel that there are already almost 80k views. Thank you all for the likes and comments. This is why I do photography. I hope it makes you all smile
Totally agreed. AND, especially considering the fact that he has played this song thousands of times....he still feels it, he still enjoys it - and so do the rest of us. Classic.
When I attended the Elton John/Billy Joel concert tour a while back, at one point they both stood up from their pianos, and walked to the front of the stage while the throngs belted out to them the chorus to "Piano Man." It was spine-tingling.
Steve Miller had two at least great albums and a lot of scattered great songs over many other records. What are you talking about? Why so grouchy? @@Obiwannabe
I agree, but SM is now singing this in baritone range. Sounds just as beautiful though - because the musicianship and the SM sense of fun is there. What a treat.
John has what I like to call the gift. He has that innate musical ability that comes from the soul. It's not something that can be learned or taught, it's something that is part of your body and soul. For those that can tap into that gift, it's a true calling and beautiful to behold.
So pleasing to hear the audience sing along and making Steve !iller smile while he's singing. A magical and satisfiying moment for the performers and the audience.
As great as John is, there are times when he wakes up on mornings and says to himself…’holy shit!’ He honours Steve Miller beautifully in this duo. Respect
This is why he fit so well with Dead and Company these last 6 years. He isn't trying to make himself standout. He's making the band as a whole stand out and knows when he can let himself shine. He really is one of the best guitarists of this generation.
Not sure how the algorithm blessed me with this on an early morning rise but I am so glad it did! I forgot how much I loved this song! Great playing by both, what an awesome moment in time.
I've seen a lot of interviews with musicians and when asked who is the best guitarist alive right now they always say John Mayer or Dave Mathews. John can play pretty much anything and Dave's music is elusively complicated when you dig into it.
80 year old Steve Miller is the GOAT. Pure talent and he's been touring every year since the 60s. I've been to dozens of his shows. One time he was his own opening act as PeeWee Frets from Waco, TX. Most of the crowd was oblivious.
His voice is raspier but it makes it even better. I was vary clicking on the video because I didn't want it to be sad like some other artists I've heard. But the voice pleasantly surprised me. Happy to hear he's still touring.
Imagining Steve Miller guiding a young boy then named John Mayer while jamming with a guitar and today that young boy is guiding. 2 great artists from different genres still playing amazing music.
Huge Mayer fan but Steve Miller is one of the most interesting cats in music for 50 years, dude has a great story. Keep rocking it out Steve, and thanks John!
Awesome collaboration from 2 different generations that depict how 2 superstars can bring both generations together to celebrate one old awesome tune !
You needed to see a performance? How do you know when you don't need to see a performance, once you are watching, you are seeing it... you need to stand back a little.
haven't had the pleasure of seeing Steve live, but this was great, and his voice is solid still. I would say though that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have a lot of tunes that the crowd sings along to. Like all of them lol
Mad respect to Steve! The guy looks and sounds amazing for 80. The Fly Like an Eagle album was huge when I was in high school. I also still have the original Joker album that I got when I joined the Capital Record Club....lol. Remember them? Cheers!
This caught me by surprise. The Steve Miller Band was my first “out of the house and on my own” album. To see these two who have brought so much beautiful music to the soundtrack of my life at vastly different times in my life (Steve: college/ John: past to present) brings me, (I seriously had a few joyful tears sneak up on me) such great happiness. 🧩😢🥰 @johnmayer
It’s so humbling to see how they can give each other so much room to interpret the song in their own way and combining each others styles into harmony.
I remember the 8 tracks and no cassettes took over quickly. Speakers, the bigger, the better. CB radio with antennae whipping in the wind. Everybody had a name. "what's your handle?" Red Riding Hood (red hair). Hip hugger jeans that drug the ground, patches. We were cool! To be on stage, there had to be talent, not just good looks and autotune to make you sound good. Music not filthy like today. John has talent and can play his instrument. Enjoyed this SO-SO much. Thanks !
Oh boy the memories! The first time I heard "The Joker" was in 1973 on a warm summer night in northern California, I was 14. My cousin Danny and I were laying in a neighbor's ski boat with his daughters Stacey and her twin sister Tracy, it was playing on the portable radio and we were uh.. getting cozy! 🤪😁
May the space cowboys the „musical ones“ and the others watch the 3rd starship 🚀start and listen to this song 🎶❤️it’s such a great recording. I wonder if all the space cowboy -🤠 -groups have a party together and if so they should play this on autorepeat. It felt like the right moment to listen to it again .
Loved watching the smiles on Steve's face while his fans are singing out the lyrics! He looks so happy! Great acoustic & harmonic duet from these guys!
I first saw this as a kid in the early 70s as a trailer for a surf movie. I remember a black dude just ripping out the bass line and SM nailing the wah pedal. Always been a favourite.
I was there! The last time I saw Steve Miller live was at a Meadowlands all day festival with the Beach Boys and Pablo Cruise in 1978. This was a treat! THANKS for sharing.
I was there too! I think it was the grand opening of the Meadowlands for concerts. A really hot day. I remember The Beach Boys came out onto the far side of the field in corvette convertibles and rolled slowly along the side to he stage. Saw the Grateful Dead there a few months later, another hot day in the sun, it was almost unbearable.
John Mayer has come a long way into humility and just the expression of the love of music and respect for others. Nice growth 👏🏻 Steve Miller is legend ❤
I'm 70, and this song brings back so many awesome memories! I lost my Fly Like an Eagle album somewhere along the way, but still have my CD, that I played frequently in my car , till I got a new car. (no player)....still...CD will always have a home in my house, and my heart! Thanks for this performance John and Steve, and everyone who sang along!
Yea this is awesome reminds me of smoking bong hits on the back of my buddies van ditching class.. the best time to be alive, really it still is. Gotta have fun in this life cus that's what happiness is.
In 1978, they released their biggest selling album in North America, Greatest Hits 1974-78, which has been certified 13× Platinum in the United States and diamond in Canada. HTF is he underrated?!? Stop using words that you don't know what they mean.
Shut up. Steve Miller was a huge SUPERSTAR in the 80. Had lots of top ten hits and with "Fly like an eagle" a super selling album. Underrated!!! You dont know what you are talking about!!!
No he’s not underrated. Considered pure gold by the whole music industry. Is this a troll? Or just another spaz thinking they are the only ones who can recognize talent?
we saw Peter Frampton and Steve Miller a few years back.... Frampton opened and some in the crowd were surprised with all his hits why... until The Steve Miller Band came out and blew the roof off!
This is why John Mayer is a legend, I saw him on this solo tour in Detroit and I've seen the Steve Miller Band 3x in the last decade, Steve kills it as usual, and John keeps the legends alive, including his own.
Everytime I see something like this it reminds me of how often we were told "no one will be listening to this stuff 50 years from now". Yeah, right Dad. When was the last time someone covered "Hot Diggity Dog Ziggity"? Yes that was in my Dad's record collection - meager as it was.
There was a young grocery store at Publix in Ocala, FL who used to sing Steve Miller songs as he brought shopping carts in. When I would see him we would sing together. I am 70 and he wad probably 18 or do. Good taste has no age limit.
How does this happen... So awesome! JM was thinking about it all so hard during the performance giving Steve full control of the performance. Legend...
@@christianlandrum892I’m sure it’s a great sounding guitar, but we’re not really hearing the guitar here (at least not it’s true acoustic tone), but rather the signal from the internal pickup/electronics which I’m sure get’s EQ’d pretty heavily before it comes out through the PA. If you really wanted to hear the guitar, a mic in front of the soundhole would be a better choice, but I understand that’s not practical or convenient for live performances like these.
When I was 13, on Friday nights before he would go out in his Ford Torino, my big brother and I would shoot pool in the basement. We played two albums, Steve Miller’s Greatest Hits and Hotel California. Some of my most cherished memories.
Never even heard of John Mayer until recently, I’m 69! He’s very good, so it’s never too late to hear someone different! Eric Clapton mentioned him in an interview I was watching, so I looked him up on Spotify.
