Great vid. Jag dealers in the US charge $1800, for what is a very simple oil and pan change. Takes an hour to DIY, tops. The kits are under ~$200. Its a shame we don't have honest service shops, here.

Thanks James. They say the diff oil is lifetime too, but looking I to the Topic service schedule, it requires a change of oil every 160,000kms or 8 years. Same with the supercharger oil. I'm just not going to take the risk 😉

I made use of the same special from ZF on the XFR-S, the guys at ZF said the oil did not look as if it had worked at all, but at least for my piece of mind I know it is done. Please share your Brake pads and disks info as I would need to do the same soon and I believe the XFR and XFR-S uses exactly the same discs and pads.

Hey Paul. XFRS huh? Niiiiiiice 😁. What color? And does yours have that gorgeous cray big spoiler on the trunk? Yes, the pads could be similar and the size of the discs probably the same, but doesn't the RS have drilled discs? Or are yours solid?

@@bullet24za Wow - you won't believe this, but I was at my Jaguar dealer this morning picking up some things for my car when I went to visit the salesman who sold me my 2016 XF and he took me upstairs - they have a black XFRS on the floor right now waiting for a new owner. I took some pictures of it and will include it on a future video. Stunning car, but unfortunately it didn't have the radar cruise control which has really spoilt me now as it has become a safety feature for me. The highways in this place are awful - traffic is cruising one second and the next you're stopped for like a half hour. Yours has 405kw whereas mine only has 375kw - both daddy's of the Jaguar XF ;)

@carfanfan
@carfanfan 3 года назад
@@ismaelnsengiyumva8552 Yep, it's a 5.0 V8 then. It's a good buy as long as it has full service history. Skip a service and the oil turns to sludge. If it's a naturally aspirated V8 you will have less issues as the superchargers can suffer worn couplers and then they sound noisy. They are solid engines provided you keep oil changes frequent. The only big issue the V8 suffers is waterpump failure or coolant hoses that become old and brittle. If it hasn't had it's transmission oil change, ask for discount because it is due now - the car is 8 years old. ZF do oil changes for around R6,800 here. Not sure where you're at but if you have a ZF service outlet, see if they can do it for you. Use only ZF oil. Anything else will ruin the tranny. But low miles for the year so go for it. If service history sketchy, bargain the price down and have it serviced asap.

That was true with the old 6 speed gearbox. An oil and filter change could cause more problems than it fixed. After 2010 ZF introduced the new 8 speed transmissions which jaguar adopted in 2011. They do need regular oil and filter changes depending on driving conditions and age. It's best left to a ZF gearbox specialist rather than the jaguar dealer. Well, that's my experience anyway. My car always came back from the dealer with more faults than it went in with.

@jonnygti

Good job, that’s money well spent if it drives so much nicer, can’t really put a price on that! Thanks for including the pricing in pounds by the way,usually when I’m watching someone who isn’t from the U.K., they list prices in Dollars, then I have to google it to find out how much it was! It was interesting to hear how you have to “road worthy” a vehicle there. In the U.K we call it an “MOT”, which is a yearly test all vehicles have to have that are over 3 years old. It’s mainly to do with safety, so things like brakes, suspension, lights, wipers, windscreen checked for damage, exhaust, and a general visual check around the car for damage etc. Then they will check exhaust emissions aswell, it must pass when the engine is at certain RPM’s. Then you get a report which could have minor, major or dangerous faults. If you get any minors your vehicle will still pass, if you get any major or dangerous faults then it’s an instant fail, and you’ll get 10 days to get it fixed and then re-tested free of charge, if not then you will have to pay again for the test. You can also have “advisories” at the bottom of the test page, which are things that they are advising you of, and perhaps need to be looked at soon, but are not causing a fail at the time of the test. So it’s quite simple if you buy a car over here, you just make sure it’s got a long MOT, or usually if you buy from a decent garage or dealership, they will usually MOT the car for you prior to purchasing it. If so then you don’t need to do anything (apart from get insurance, tax) then you’re good to go. So that’s how we roll in the U.K!🇬🇧 👍🏻
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 года назад
hey Jonathan. Thanks for your informative comment. Very interesting. I used to be a fan of Wheeler Dealers and could never understand the MOT thing. Having done some research on my channel, I've noticed that 65% of my viewers are from the UK, so including prices in pounds seems the better way to go so that most of my audience are on the same page and don't feel alienated. South Africa will soon be releasing a new system similar to that of your MOT. It will be an annual health check that one's car has to go for before you can renew your car's license. Every car has to be licensed in addition to being registered. So currently my car is registered on my name, but I have to get the license and in order to do that, it must pass a roadworthy check. Not expensive, but the repairs can be if they find something that fails the test and is expensive to repair, like suspension or steering or brakes. I'm sure my XFR will fly through the test with ease as I've just had the brakes done and don't see any other issues that could cause a fail. Thanks again for watching and stay tuned for the next video which will be on the brakes ;)
@jonnygti
@jonnygti 4 года назад
JagFan Hilton Really, that’s a high percentage of U.K. viewers. I guess us British folk like our Jags! Our tests are similar, if you’re lucky you’ll only pay the price of the test £30/40, if there’s no faults found. It’s great when that happens. Will check out your next video for sure 👍🏻

Hello Hilton. Great you're pleased with the gearbox service. Well worth it, especially as you noticed the improvement right away. My Tucson front alignment was off slightly (despite the tyre garage saying they had corrected it previously!) and it was driving me nuts! I got it realigned at a specialists on Thursday and its amazing how a small adjustment can make such a difference. I was so pleased its like driving a different car. Subtle ambient lighting along the black panel you suggested would look fantastic. The Jag is looking good, and I love the interior. The manufacturers brake disk wear tolerance is surprisingly low for many cars. It's interesting 'checking out' the disks on parked cars and its amazing how many a well passed their best, and I assume the drivers have no idea. Have a good weekend ahead. :-)
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 года назад
Hey Andy, good to hear from you. Also glad you got that alignment sorted. Steering is the main thing you feel when driving a car so its important that it feels 100% right otherwise is can detract the experience completely. I've just had the brakes done and am happy with them too. The car stops on a dime and no more brake warning which was irritating. Have an awesome weekend and thanks for watching ;)

You'll need two new wear indicators (front right and rear right side). The OEM rotors and pads will cost an arm and a leg, you're better off saving a chunk of money and buying aftermarket. I used PowerStop z26/z23 rotor (slotted and drilled) and pad (ceramic pads) kit. It comes with brake lube, hardware and wear indicator cable that worked for my XF. Cost was around $500 CAD. Note: Unlike cheap aftermarket brake kits that are made to fit various vehicles, the powerstop kit I purchased (from Amazon) was specific to the XFR, XJR and F Type R.

@carfanfan
@carfanfan 2 года назад
Hey Paul. It could be several things. If it is indeed the TCM, almost thought you meant the traction control module, but seems you mean transmission control module. Is the transmission slipping between any gears? You would hear this by a sudden increase in rpm while it's shifting. If yes, the mechatronic unit which is basically part of the valve body could have worn seals and when they leak oil it causes slipping and it could cause the gearbox to go into restricted mode. It could be the module itself that needs replacing but I stand corrected on whether this is part of the valve body inside the transmission or whether it's located on the outer casing. But I would have a gearbox specialist look at this for you. Depending on the repair cost, it could be cheaper to get a salvage gearbox with matching gearbox code and just replace the whole thing. Only issue there is you don't know how long that one will last. Depends on age and miles it's done. That's why I always stress, service your gearbox oil every 5 years instead on ten because it will just last longer.

There's a filler on the side of the gearbox where you pump the oil into. Once the oil start running out of that filler hole, it's full. But I recommend leaving the car on the hoist, put it in drive - fill again until it comes out by the filler hole, put the plug back, put it in reverse, then fill it again until oil comes out the filler hole. The gearbox must also be up to operating temp while doing this.

@@carfanfan Yeah, don't get me started. Ha. $2k brakes, $200.00 oil changes. $1290 is what I paid for new plugs and coils. $600 for belts. I love it though. I don't mind spending the money and that why I buy jag and Maserati. Sure I could get a mustang, Camaro but thats boring and everyone has them. No one has my car in the entire state where I live.

Before I bought my XF S I went seeing 2 XF R's, one was a private seller which I very very rarely buy from, the guy hadn't even cleaned the car, and it just looked a bit jaded if you know what I mean. The other was a dealership and it looked amazing, not the colour I really wanted (It was black) but none the less an amazing car, drove fantastically and when I got out my Mrs said I had a stupid grin on my face..........anyway, I was 10 seconds from saying yes but one number stopped me, 16.5.........as in MPG. I estimated that just my trip to work and back each week would cost me in the region of £100..........and thats not counting weekend driving, year ago I had an XK R and I did get fed up of the (very) frequent trips to the petrol station.. Anyway long story short, I bottled it and went with the smaller engine. Am I sorry? Yes and no, every time I see an XF R my stomach drops, but my current car is no slouch........anyway, I would have probably killed myself with 500bhp! Keep the video's coming mate, I love them.

LoL. The gas mileage would have been a problem to me if I didn't work from home. I would never have bought one. It's more of a weekend car. I do small trips to the shops once or twice a week and most of the time it's in the garage. This car will still have low miles on it when I sell it on. And a nice Service record 😜

I had the plastic cover replaced with a metal one as it doesn't seem to afford much protection to knocks from underneath with likely catastrophic consequences. Don't know about filters for it though. Ambient light behind the door handle would be my suggestion as below area around switches is already lit. I think you're spot on about the lip and the wear sensor. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KyETtzM2veY.html around 5:15. Consider getting the discs refaced / skimmed if parts are hard / expensive to come by. Check wear limits first though.

Hey Paul - I have never seen a metal sump on a ZF gearbox. Very interesting. The sump has the filter built in and this is crucial to protect the gears and valve body from any contaminants that could cause a fail. Thanks for the advice on the ambient lighting. I think a little light in the door handles would look awesome. Good idea, thanks for that.

Is it best to replace all 4 rotors and pads at the same time ?
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 года назад
I think so. I've always done that with all my cars and haven't had to worry about brakes again. I've sold them on without having been troubled by brake issues. I've just had them done and even though the front didn't need replacing, I did them anyway because it just means next year, I gotta go through this all again. The sensor had in fact worn through before the pads reached their maturity just as I suspected. And that was caused by the huge lip on the outer edge of the rotors.

That depends on how hard you drive the car. The stability control really hammers the rear brake pads and they can wear very very quickly when driving in a spirited fashion. Also if you turn off the traction control fully. (hold down the button for a full 10 seconds ). You can do some amazing back end drifting around corners and burnouts .... 😎

Nice video on the transmission service. Once you get the brakes done , the car will be properly sorted.

I had the brakes done this week and wow, now this car is coming on. Just need the spark plugs and supercharger service done then it will be like a new one 😉

@@carfanfan Awesome stuff. THe supercharger service is a definite. I have to replace my snout thru wear. Recommend that you change the oil in the supercharger whilst it is off. Also get the mechanic to check the cooling pipes that are housed at the back of the SC & underneath it. Some hard to get one's are worth looking at.
@carfanfan

@@nandolepore7880 It's not necessary to replace the entire about if the coupler is the only thing that's worn. You can buy the separately and then remove the snout and replace just that part if your s/c pulley is still good 😉

how many miles / km did u have on it when you got it done?
@carfanfan

It had 80,000 kilometers on the clock. But the car was almost ten years old and the transmission service must be done every 7 years or 160,000 km or 100,000 miles whichever comes first.

@@carfanfan Yep it shifts really well. It has tell-tale signs of old oil as it shifts REALLY REALLY smooth after warm for 2 mins. If I just take up and leave right after turning it on, it will hesitate just for .1 seconds in first til warmed up. It's really nothing at all and ONLY seen when the oil is absolutely cold.

Nice! I just did mine yesterday at 123k miles. I noticed a little bit of a difference, mine only ended up using 6 liters of fluid. I even waited until proper operating temperatures for filling. But overall I noticed a good amount of change with the shifting, next for me is to change the rear diff fluid! It is much easier than doing the transmission fluid lol.

Great! People don't realize these XF gearboxes need servicing. They'll last longer if looked after. I'm having my diff oil done in April.
