I would like to see Tommi do a upgrade/accessory series on his Jeep. No heated seats, but does the after market offer affordable heated seat covers that plug into the cigarette lighter/power port? Will a Rubicon's electronically disconnecting front sway bar fit and work on the Willy's Sport?
I like the barebones stripped down aspect of this Jeep, but I cannot get my mind wrapped around that it was 35k!! That’s insane to me for what you get.
He paid less than $32k for the Wrangler. The difference includes taxes and other buying costs, which would apply to any vehicle he bought in his state.
I actually prefer the manual windows and locks. Wranglers get wet and the less electronics the better. Those windows will crank forever. I love it Tommy, I think u made a good purchase.
@@floridaman7 yes, I replaced quite a few of those plastic gear straps on my ‘89. Fortunately, they were a cheap and easy fix. My ‘95 had a better setup and lasted for over 250,000 miles.
This dude got ripped off. Stop making excuses for poor value because even after 7 years of hard off roading my Tacoma does not have any moisture issues with "Electronics" lol!
Electric windows are just as reliable as manual, only difference is they see many more cycles than manual so may wear out do to use. No wiring in the door would be nice if you are frequently removing the doors. The manual mirrors are a deal breaker for me especially if you have multiple drivers
Is this guy exaggerating or are wranglers windows really unreliable? I’m thinking about a jeep for my next vehicle but sheesh if they can’t even get the windows right
Tommy, as you exit your Jeep, lock the door from the inside. When you get out push it shut. It will now be locked so you don'y need to lock it with the key. 1980's technology!
@@prime77089 Now that I'm reaching farther into my memory banks, my Miata didn't have that feature and I routinely locked myself out until I got one of those AAA wallet keys.
This is what happens when a vehicle has no competition for decades. The price tag for this thing is insane: it has no features, no new tech, the basic design is ancient, the engine is now 11 years old, all the tooling is long paid for and they're mass produced. By all rights this should be a $20-22k truck, like it used to be.
@@manbeastx69 I think it was around 2015 when it became ridiculous. I remember looking at a 2015 Sahara unlimited and it was around $28k CAD MSRP, today that same trim is like $48k.
The funny thing is I'm sure some of that de-contenting actually costs them money. Manufacturer component costs for a complete power window assembly are $20-$30 per window. Considering a likely low take rate on the manual windows, development costs, extra manufacturing and logistics complexity, it hardly makes sense from a cost perspective. On some of the models I've worked on lately the smaller center stack screens are actually costing more money. On a 1:1 basis the cost difference for an extra inch or two of screen is literally pennies, but because the larger screens are now being purchased in larger quantities the end cost from suppliers is less. They just want that carrot on the stick to drive you to a higher trim.
But some of these lower end features (e.g. manual windows) must already excist in the part bin. They might be more widely used in other contries and other cars within the manufacturer? Or are these specifically developed only for the Wrangler?
I work for a large brown delivery company. They have always been adamant about not having any creature comforts on their vehicles. It would actually cost them more to have Tractor truck manufacturers put manual crank windows in the vehicles. I know this cause my brother in law is an engineer at one of the manufacturers. It hasn't been till very recently that they finally broke down and just let them install power windows for less.
@@30smsuperstrat I’ve working in the Tier 1 automotive suppliers manufacturing automation since I’ve been out of college 2005 and I can absolutely agree with your assessment, the tooling design and deployment for injection molding and assembly of crank windows or automatic actuation will be within 10% each fixturing changeover (no supplier has a dedicated line only assembling power windows and another for crank windows for Nissan Sentras), and once the lines are running the changeover labor hours costs are about the same. But tooling is expensive, injection molds for crank assemblies costs just as much as for power window buttons + stepper motor fabrication, changeovers are comparatively expensive with so few people buying crank windows an OEM could very easily be losing money offering cranks, or more likely the Tier 1 supplier misquoted, quoted a price per unit but did not quote a price per unit at different volumes which they should have.
I had a 2011 mitsubishi pajero gl in Australia. They didn't sell the gl to the public, only to fleets. It was the base, base. Steel wheels, white, cloth seats, manual trans. It has cruise, climate control , power folding mirrors. I guess these things were just carried over from the more common luxury models.
No idea how all of this added up to $35K. You should’ve walked out the door paying $23K for this Wrangler. Asinine how much they’re price gouging just because of the name.
IMO I think it's because there's simple a lot more volume of materials used in a car like this. The Wrangler is not small - Tommy's Crosstrek is $23K or so, and it's got the same # of seats, but Wranger's 20% heavier and all the suspension components are larger. I am not saying I disagree with you just that we are not purchasing a Fiat 500 here :D
Hey Tommy, your Jeep IMHO is the perfect Jeep. It has everything you need and makes the perfect mountain goat. Super capable, light weight, less to go wrong, I love it. Now let's assign some TFL budget dollars towards some basic off road goodies for safety/recovery. Couple of good lights, steel bumpers,, winch, GMRS radio, high lift...and make some amazing videos with her.
Nice review. There really is something liberating about basic functionality. Get over the initial novelty value of most modern gizmos and all you're left with is the extra cost, weight, information overload, and chance of things going wrong.
You will then require an electric harness to be connected to the door. Once you do that then pressure will be on to add power windows, etc. So this car has zero power to doors, makes removing doors easier and of course cheaper
It will be a sad sad day when there are no more manual transmissions and an even sadder day when people are no longer allowed to own their own cars or drive them on public streets
@@davidheckart639 I wore mine out, and replaced it with a Detroit TrueTrac which is significantly better, and should be the stock option instead of one with clutch packs. But then it makes the expensive electronic locker less of an improvement over a Torson-style LS. With the front also having one, the simplicity and capability of my setup is pretty sweet.
I've owned vehicles with no options, and vehicles with lots of options.... I'll take options any day. The novelty of cranking windows, and adjusting mirrors manually wears thin after a few years in my experience.
I'd love to see 4wd comparison videos have an "are you over-paying" section, where a base model Wrangler attempts to tackle the same obstacles that all the upscale vehicles ran through. It'd be a great perspective to offer perspective buyers.
T F L is in the People’s Republic of Boulder but I don’t think the guys at T F L are a bunch of Liberal Boulderites. If they were they would not be doing this Chanel and what they do.
Dude, what was wrong with your JK? That thing was badass. Had the same engine. One of the most expensive winches on the market. Alls you needed was gearing and maybe a front Dana 44 with some lockers. I don't hate it, but you already had so many mods into your JK
It’s hilarious to me that the times we now live in make Bluetooth audio/phone connectivity a standard feature over power locks and even A/C in this case lol. I remember not long at all ago that was a pretty luxury feature on even the most premium vehicles.
I had a guy at a dealership tell me the reason for that was it is now considered a safety feature mandated by the feds. Now whether or not he was right or wrong or just pulling my leg is up in the air.
Tommy... keep this one forever. Think of the fun you'll have passing this one on to your kids... especially if you build it up a little. It might be a great chick magnet too and a woman that likes this no frills Jeep, enjoys adventure, just might be a keeper. Great choice! P.S. - maybe your dad should rate this comment.
Feels like jeep got away with having no competition for so long that they were robbing their customers. The bronco is showing what you can get for that base price.
@Glamisemt24 And this is why I am such a Bronco fan. No PT Cruiser parts and gauges in the cabin to trigger my PTSD. Let’s keep this competition going!
Don't miss any of the extras, but the price looks like it includes them and this is sad. I'd say that a fair price for this Jeep would be in the 28-30k $.
Wranglers are way overpriced because of demand. What you get for the money is crazy. Not saying they’re comparable other than for the features but - Same price as a base Willys you can get a Mazda CX-5 with led, self leveling dynamic headlights, 2.5L turbo engine, leather heated/cooler seats, heated rear seats, auto ac, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise and lane keep assist.
As always, great insights! I had a 2004 TJ Rubicon, loved it of course especially the simplicity of it. I wish Jeep offered an off road goodies package(lockers, 4.10, sway disconnect, factory lift) with the more utilitarian seats, windows, etc. Call it the stuff you want, and the stuff you don't need package...
The crazy thing is that manual Windows cost Jeep more than motorized ones. Pretty sure many other “downgraded” features also cost more than what most would expect to be standard. It’s just crazy how these companies care more about charging more for the the car (even for things that cost them less) instead of providing the customer the best product they can.
This jeep is awesome, it's the way jeeps should be! However, $35k is ridiculous. My 21 ranger is a base model, but even with a few options it came out to $33k msrp and $30k out the door after some rebates. 4x4, power equipment group, tow package, bed liner, and the STX appearance package.
Seat belts are mandated, which is fine, but so is stability control and the rear camera, which I find ridiculous. It’s safer, sure, but also very expensive.
Get the base model and build it out how you want. After market support for these vehicles is great. FYI you guys could do a BIG series on building out a base model vehicle to your spec!
Your video is the best tip I've gotten towards my ideal new rig. Seriously, the lack of electronics on the doors (no power windows) is a big positive for me. Agree all the way through your demo. Put a diesel in it and I would be done with any lust for another vehicle.
Hey Tommy! Thanks for the videos as always. Just to provide some perspective...my 2003 TJ top-of-the-line (Tomb Raider ed) was about $32K when brand new. It's basically your Jeep with the Rubicon package. And, I know exactly how you feel when driving it. I have a newer Wrangler with all the bells and whistles, and I still enjoy driving my TJ on the trails a lot.
Priced out a base 2 dr Bronco with auto, larger engine, aux accessory switches and roof rails. Note all Broncos come with LED. Priced 2 dr Wrangler Sport with auto, V6 and hard top. Wrangler was $2k more. Also wonder why Jeep is charging extra for all colors except white. Keep up the good vids.
You would figure that Jeep would drop their price to be competitive...more than likely,...Ford will raise their price next model year to match instead..pricing on vehicles will never go down. The manufacturers are making way too much $$$
Ford hasn’t opened 2022 order banks, and while Ford has CLAIMED they are going to honor MSRP for people who ordered prior to March 19 2021 and have a signed purchase agreement with their dealer, what they have NOT said is that they upped their finance rate. It is currently a whole 1% higher than Jeep financing….. Maybe that doesn’t sound like much, but it sure adds up over the term of the loan. …And that is today. When 2022 Bronco order banks open, you are still likely to wait another year before you see a Bronco. Ford only finally closed reservations yesterday, and admits they are sold out through the 22MY.
Still puzzles me how an entry level Wrangler with so little interior features as this one, is able to be more expensive, than some new pick-ups. And in it loaded trim level, too close to the price of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
@@RogerM88 The 4Runner (entry-level) would need to be raised (including taller tires AND lower gearing because of the taller tires) to compensate for the longer wheelbase and longer rear overhang, to possibly compete with this 2-door Wrangler.
LOVE your Jeep Tommy. The pricing for these is completely ridiculous…and to be honest, the larger screen and the power locks/doors should be standard. It seems really silly to me that that would be a big ‘extra’ cost. We know you don’t miss them…but c’mon, it IS the 21st century.
It’s cool but it’s got all the same accessories and technology as my 88 Jeep Yj, and my 06 Jeep LJ. For 35k I bought my new 2021 Tacoma with electric everything and Manuel trans and locking rear diff.
Yeah I’m not really understanding WHY he bought this vehicle new. I mean it’s for the channel obviously, but in a normal situation he could have bought a low mileage used with all the features he’s missing for the same price
I love the basic version of the Jeep the same way I love my LP records and my automatic watches. My kid has the Sport S, But I think I am going to get the Willys base sport for myself. I really like the tactile feeling you get from doing all the driving manually.
Thank you for video. I am impressed you had the will-power and fortitude to save your hard earned after tax dollars to buy one! Do you have another car you use for daily driving?
Great Jeep Tommy! I did the 3.6L with the manual too and I’m loving the way it performs over my previous JK’s 3.6L/6 speed. My only issue is the cost of new Jeeps. Your Jeep’s price was what my 2012 pretty much fully loaded Rubicon cost when I bought it new. Something just doesn’t feel right about that… when I got a Jeep as my first vehicle, it was a cheap (I think my first one was probably 15k TJ) yet still a quality vehicle.
I have the exact model in blue and love it. It does everything I want it to, without breaking the bank. It’s also very easy to upgrade a wrangler if I decide I want more bells and whistles.
Hopefully having some actual competition now, Jeep will reconsider not making power windows, door locks, and a/c standard because not having that be standard in a $35k vehicle is insane. That being said though, I love my Jeep Gladiator.
Some "Jeep People" are glad that things like power windows and door locks aren't standard equipment on two-door Wranglers. What might make them and people like you happy at the same time is if Jeep didn't charge customers for the parts it leaves out in base models, while including the "mod cons" when charging $35,000.00. ;)
the willys package really captures the old school jeep look..i like it a lot...can you swap out rubicon parts as time goes by since you wanted affordable jeep at first...saving up money to buy the offroad upgrades later
I just got an 06 LJ. It’s incredibly basic, but I don’t miss anything except Bluetooth capability. That’s a radio upgrade away. This is my dream car so it’s never getting sold.
I just got a 2021 Jeep Wrangler sport altitude and love it. Wish it had AT tires but I can fix that. I got the 4cyl turbo because I don’t like paying for gas and the turbo is faster. Also got the automatic trans because it’s not a sports car and I just want to cruise without having to shift in congested city traffic. I used to have a jk with the v6 and that thing was terrible compared to my new Jeep. No “regurts”
What a scam! 35k for a Chrysler product. Yeah they’re good looking but cmon. No keyless entry on a vehicle over 25k is a huge rip. How do they get away with charging so much for these?
I know it might be difficult in Colorado but can you at very least compare the Jeep willys to the Suzuki jimny, best small budget new 4x4 for backpackers
Push button start but no keyless....? makes sense. Absurd price for what is basically a small to compact suv with 4wd and no other options. should be 27k max
cool jeep man. little pricy for my blood. i have an XJ for my off roader and a couple of my wheeling buddies have TJs. theirs certain scenarios where rear leaf springs compress better than rear coils. at the end of the day tho. the CJ, TJ, and XJ all make it to the same summits.
I understand why a lot of Jeep owners wouldn’t want power windows and doors. What I don’t understand is how Jeep can get away with charging $35,000 for a vehicle that doesn’t have them.
They haven't had any competition since 2015ish when the Xterra and FJ Cruiser were both discontinued within a year of each other. Basically the only competition (if you wanna call it that) has been the 4Runner, and they are grossly overpriced as well due to the Toyota tax. Hopefully with the Bronco coming back to the market, it will force Jeep to lower their prices.
I really like this jeep. It's such a great balance of capability and affordability. I would love to see you take it to some of the more difficult trails and show what it can do in comparison to vehicles that cost close to twice as much.
Wranglers are cool, but once you get past the roof novelty, wow it’s overpriced! Reliability argument aside, an SR5 4Runner is still a way better buy for most consumers.
The problem is the SR5 (think base) starts at $37,305 for 2WD, going 4WD bumps it up to $39,180 (2022 as posted on the website). The real problem is finding a base model on a dealer lot. And if you want a Jeep with a manual trans just go to your local dealer and order it. That's what Tommy had to do. My son ordered a Gladiator Mohave with a manual back in April and took delivery 8 weeks later.
PLEASE! Tommy, will you PLEASE in your commentary state you actually paid less than $32k for your Wrangler. While one does have to consider taxes and any other purchase cost into buying, those are variable from state to state and do not represent the cost of the vehicle. Simply, tell what you paid for the VEHICLE as taxes are not pertinent to the reviews. Rather you buy a $32k Wrangler or Camry, the taxes for your area will be the same.
Good job Tommy! I love the manual everything approach of your Jeep. Better for off-road and less to break. My first new car was a 1982 Audi 4e, manual everything, windows, shift, even a manual crank for the sunroof. Sold it in 86 to a young woman, her daughter drives it today. Cars with less electronics last longer..
Great video and actually what I was looking for. A real world recount a regular guy who just wants a Wrangler to play with! As somebody looking to purchase one in the near future, I wanted to see if a basic package left any actual trail capabilities lacking. I think I will end up going with a more base package, potentially even the sport. One of the things that made Jeeps great historically was the fact they were so simple! Less to go wrong on them. LING LIVE THE MANUAL!!!
I like it. Fewer expensive parts to break subsequently costing two paychecks to repair. IMO, this is the way to go with a Wrangler. Plus, you can always get an after-market locker installed in the back, if you decide you need one.
All my vehicles are manual door I love it. I don't even lock my crew cab it takes to long. I just wish you could get a base model with the Rubicon off road features
Today that would cost just as much as a normal rubicon, electric windows, mirrors, central locking etc, don’t cost anything to the manufacturer anymore, the manual options only exist so they can make money off the electric stuff as an option.
I read that the average car purchased last year was 39k so in the grand scheme of things, 35k is not bad. You also can’t compare a 2 door Jeep to virtually any other vehicle for price comparison either except for maybe a bronco
I got a 4 door sport as basic as yours. Love the manual windows handles. Have left the car key inside by mistake 3 times, but love people's reaction when noticing how basic it is. Overall, it really gives me a special Jeep feel by being that basic and still very capable car to explore
Had a 17 Sport S with manual locks and windows. Through the keys to the kids and told them to go take for a ride. Fun watching them try to figure out how to get in the locked vehicle.
Same. I have an ‘88 Grand Wagoneer wheeler and I don’t lock the doors. I don’t keep anything in there anyways and I rather them just open the doors and look rather than start breaking windows.
