It's really not so much most of their engines. It's usually their transmissions and their interiors...also they have thin paint. But Nissans when properly maintained can last a long time. I had an '03 Frontier with a 4 banger 5 spd. RWD and that thing NEVER left me stranded and fired up 99.9% of the time. Had almost 375k miles on it when I sold it with MINIMAL problems.
@yeldarBkereD

Very true. Nissan's Jatco CVT transmissions have given Nissan as a whole a bad name. They aren't bad transmissions, per say, but if you treat them like a regular AT (aggressive driving, not changing CVT fluid, etc) they will not live long. We have a Jatco CVT in our Outlander Sport, and we just passed 200k and the transmission is still rock solid. That being said, the CVT fluid has been changed every 30k miles and we've always been gentle with it.

Shopped for a used 4Runner back during the chip shortage. High mileage ones were insane prices. Looked for the next best thing. I'm a former Nissan tech (during the 2001-2003 era) and fell in love with the round headlight Xterras. I needed to replace a car fast late 2022 and had been eying up the newer Xterras as well as 4Runners. I got so much more vehicle with the X than I could have for the overpriced 4Runners. I found a 2011 Pro-4x in Night Armor gray locally with 140k on the clock and several performance mods. We had a record snowfall that winter, and with some new Nitto TerraGrappler tires that X tore it up! I have 185k on it now, and it has a couple repairs to do but I love it. Added a 2" lift with new Bilstein shocks, it looks amazing. I love this thing.

I've had two Xterras, and just bought my third; it's 17 years old, with 164,000 miles on it. It has a plethora of computer codes showing up, one of them being the crank shaft sensor. It stalls out, just like this one did. I knew about this when I bought it, so why buy that headache? Simple: IT'S AN XTERRA!! I know what I'll have, after it's fixed, which is a BEAST that will carry me happily many, many more miles! ❤

I've got nearly 300,000 mi on my '06 Xterra right now. I bought it about 5 years ago off of a guy that never took care of it. Its actually been pretty reliable. The only problems I've had is the rear axle broke because the rear diff seal blew out because of a clogged breather and needed to be replaced, the catalytic converters clogged up so I needed to remove those, and the valve cover on the passenger side started leaking so I replaced both. Since I've owned it I've put in a new fuel pump, new brakes, calipers and rotors, new spark plugs and coils, new tires, and that's about it. Still runs great with a minor oil leak that I can find, still has very good power, and it's never left me stuck in the snow or mud.

VQ33DE and VQ35DE are good engines too on the Pathfinders. They have their quirks but I have an '03 Nissan Pathfinder SE and he VQ35DE is a gas hog (but has V8 power like hp/tq figures) but it's a SOLID engine and the transmission shifts like butter. Only thing I've had wrong with it is an oil cooler o-ring that caused pin hole oil leak (common issue but $10 to fix myself). It has 174k miles on it and I've seen folks with my gen Pathfinder (with 3.3 and 3.5 V6 engines) with 300k on them still running.

Had an aftermarket tow bar installed in 2011 for my move from Cali to Arkansas and it has towed what ever I've attached with no problems. There have been a few recalls which were taken care of but for some reason my VIN was not listed on the recall for the coolant leak into the transmission. I eventually did replace the transmission and radiator due to the coolant leaked into the transmission but not before 240K miles (2020). I do need to replace right side EGR system which I plan in the next month or so. I love my Xterra and plan to drive it as long as I can. Thanks for the videos!

I have a 2005 Xterra automatic 2 WD with over 300,000 miles. The model is called Off Road. My daughter, who is a professional mechanic with her own shop, told me the main parts below (tranny etc) are plated. She never changed anything major since I bought it from my neighbor for $4000 except for an alternator here and brakes there. She religiously maintains it every 5,000 miles. I had to paint it last year because the original paint of many Nissans, specially in Florida where it is hot and wet, faded badly. I hope I can keep it until the 500,000 miles. The Nissan dealer I went to last week for parts for another Nissan vehicle my daughter is working on, told me he never sees Xterras traded in. Owners keep them. I told my daughter that Nissan would do well reintroducing a new special commemorative model or whatever so that we all can trade our older Xterras for a new one. "Dream on" she said!

Just sold my 07 X with 220k Miles and got a 4Runner. This video makes me miss the ole X but then I remember all the parts and labor I had to put into that thing to keep it running (like a new computer this past summer) and I am just glad to have a reliable vehicle again in Toyota!

Pay to repaire or pay toyota tax 😂 I love my xterra I paid 6k for 5 years ago but 100% have to fix somethings from time to time. But mostly the coolant lines. Engine and transmission work great. 4runners were my first choice but 6k doesn't get you much for one of those

There are lots of good parts at junk yards. One night someone smashed the driver's window of my 97 T100. It is over two decades old and not that common a vehicle. But I got a replacement window at the local junk yard for $25 and the tint matches exactly. The worst part was vacuuming up all the little glass pieces.

For anybody that has this particular vehicle or it's sisters the pathfinder and frontier, make sure you do the integrated radiator transmission cooler bypass or you could end up destroying the transmission with the pink milkshake of death. I did for a while then upgraded to a better radiator. search on youtube if you haven't heard of it.

My dad has a 07 2wd with 215K miles. I’ve been offering to buy it for years because he complains of the fuel economy. It’s got a rebuilt transmission at 160K miles. That thing is torquey and decent to drive. I’m going to be pretty upset when he sells it to someone else instead of me.

The earlier 2nd generation auto- trans models had issue with transmission failure.. transmission are good but trans cooler in radiator cracked. You end up with a mix of coolant and trans fluid in the transmission. I bypassed my radiator with a larger power steering cooler off a Nissan SUV from wrecking yard. The xterra also has additional trans-cooler. Good for towing. Mine has 128,000 on a,2005.4x4 Lifted with 285 16s. .

My dad kept his 2001 Xterra for 18 years, 18 freakin years! He drove it like a maniac and beat the crap out of it doing handyman work. It was a very dependable SUV, no matter how much he abused it, the thing kept going. He managed to put well over 200,000 miles on it before he sold it a couple years back.

So many people including Scotty are misinformed about Nissan reliability. Nissan has always made cars and trucks that last long. Just look up how long do Nissan engines last and look up how long do Toyota engine last, and do the same with Honda as well. Nissan engines and transmissions have out lasted Toyota and Honda. It’s a false reputation that people keep repeating. Nissan engines on average last 300k Toyotas last 250k look them up. I’m a mechanic and I also drive a 2001 Xterra v6 for the last 23 years. I have 449k miles on it, it still runs great, over 95% of the parts are original including the drive train, and AC system, all power windows.

I had a 2005 that I bought new and I really liked it, but mine developed a whine and the plastic guides on the timing chain had wear. It had low mileage and under warranty so they replaced the chain and all the parts that go with it. Also, the Transmission cooling lines on those were prone to breaking.
