Your phone or tablet may have a comfort mode, or a setting that you can turn on, to reduce blue light bring emitted from it. I set a schedule on my phone to enable comfort mode around 8pm or Sunset. I believe my TV has a similar feature too.
@phil coulson , I’m a bit confused from the video you posted. How does it relate to anything Dr. Mike stated about blue light affecting an individuals sleep pattern? At zero point did Dr. Mike state you must purchase “blue light protecting” glasses to save your eyes from “detrimental damage” caused by blue light. the video was to briefly inform the viewer to “perhaps” stop viewing a tv, phone, computer screen right before bed so you can actually go to sleep. The glasses were only a recommendation to a person who does look at a screen right before bed, which will assist blocking blue lights allowing a persons to fall asleep sooner. In short... did we wash the same Dr. Mike video about blue light?😅😂
@@leroylonewolf5858 The thing is people may think that buying the glasses would help and solve their blue light problem but they would neglect the digital strain part, bc in their thought the glasses are blocking the lights, so I'm just giving them more data so they would research and talk to their doctors before investing into the glasses.
LeRoy Lonewolf he did. It was his third recommendation, he even supported this recommendation with a study in which a group of individuals wore blue light blocking glasses and another group used very dim lights, and none of them showed significant changes in their melatonin levels. Actually, he EVEN promoted a company where you can buy those glasses

I work in front of a computer all day. It was recommended that I get glasses with the blue light filter when I had my eyes chkd. So I did, one unexpected side effect.....90% of my migraines WENT AWAY. Never even considered the computer as a trigger. So I love them.
Me working at an optical store trying to sell blue light filters because they "hElp rEdUcE eYesTrAIn". Guess I'll be reading those research papers to understand the benefits better. Thanks for the video Dr. Mike!
I’ve had both prescription & non-prescription blue light blocking glasses for about a year and I love them! I used to get 3-4 migraines/week due to lack of sleep but now I sleep much better and rarely ever get migraines. 10/10 would definitely recommend!!
As an optometrist, Dr. Mike did his research. I repeat this stuff over and over every day. I would say that his sponsor's bluelight filtering glasses are not as effective as using the programs that change the color of your screen. The reason why the glasses he put on were clear and also do not effect the wearer's color vision perception is because they don't block that much blue light. Glasses companies and optometrists want to make money off you by selling glasses when these programs and settings on your devices already do this stuff for free.
Yeah this was a disappointing departure from his usually critical and scientifically accurate information. The rest of the video was good, but to turn it into an ad for glasses with no good evidence of efficacy has me worried he is going to go like all the other famous American doctors.
@irked I wear a glass with is supposed to protect eyes from blue light, when you see is from out sight that has a blue effect,I want to does it really blocks the light, also can you help me to get rid off myopia
@@cold7124 consult an eye doctor about your questions because they should be able to give you accurate answers. Its unethical for me to give you advice over the internet without having examined you.
@@rani5083 the ones that block a significant amount, which are therefore no longer clear... more yellowish, do help with circadian rhythm and falling asleep faster, just as Dr. Mike mentioned. But the ones that are clear don't work all that well because they only block a little bit, we dont think its actually effective enough. The computer programs work better. Some people believe they help with eye strain, its probably a placebo effect, but it doesn't harm you.
This man's a doctor, an actor, a teacher, a model, a comedian and a dog dad. What CAN'T he do?! Edit: Can someone not give an overly generous compliment and not expect to have such literal feedback?
Dr.Mike: get rid if the electronics 2 to 3 hours before bedtime Me: Watching this before going to sleep with the lights closed, brightness on 0% after experiencing eye strain from a long day of staring at my laptop because of online school. 👁👄👁 Btw im totally gonna try that 20/20/20 rule
Oh I get it, Dr Mike has realised that he doesn't want to be a Board certified Osteopathic and Family medicine resident, so he wants to go into acting.
Doctors: "Blue Light keeps you up at night." Dell: "Cool. Let's give all of our laptop chargers blue LEDs, so our customers can find their chargers in the dark and use them while they sleep." Doctors: "No, wait, what?"

I'm a software dev with an eye condition. I am able to do my job without horrible migraines because I don't "stare" at the screen for 8 hours straight
You forgot to mention that many devices have a 'night light' feature where you reduce the amount of blue light and turn it more into the red light zone. (Chronic sleep issues - had to learn this to get my sleep patterns optimal to help counter other sleep issues created from Fibromyalgia)

Recommendation to people who use computers a lot: download f.luxx. They're SO helpful for your eyes at night. YMMV but for me I have my sunset to Halogen (3400) and my bedtime to 3000. While it's important to lower the blue light down to relax your eyes, if you go TOO warm it can dampen the monitor contrast which might make pictures and text harder to read, and therefore make you squint more which defeats the purpose. Of course, during the day go full blue light while the sun is out. AND ALWAYS KEEP YOUR ROOM BRIGHT! Even with warm light, if your room is pitch black it hurts your eyes.
Redshift works as well - it can let you adjust the color temperature as well as brightness either throughout the entire day, or at different parts of the day.
Macs and PCs already have a 'night shift' setting ('night light' on PCs), so you don't even need to download software (unless you want specific customization).
I think it should also be pointed out that wearing glasses with blue light blockers all day can be a problem. Many of us who wear glasses all the time also have blue light blocker added. However, as you mentioned it’s important to get this blue light during the day. So blocking it all day and then having lots of light during the evening continue gives your circadian system no ability to entrain itself. We need the correct zeitgebers at the correct times.
I only ever is that close to a screen when I am reading on my phone in bed just before falling asleep. But the screen is, of course, white on black, so there is not that much light overall.
TIPS: -Windows 10 has a night lamp/ nightlight option. Your screen will send out less blue light and more yellowish. (You can control the time it activates.) -There are programs for your PC (or apps for your phone) to lower your screen's brightness even further.
I did a lot of this research myself when I was considering getting blue light blocking glasses. Ended up deciding I didn't need them because blue light is not what's causing my eye strain, like you said. Hopefully people can watch this video instead of spending a bunch of time reading research! Also: That intro kind of hints at villain Dr. Mike, that's a movie I'd watch haha
I think blue light is contributing to my eye strain. My straining focus was giving me slight blurriness. Than insomnia was not helping either. I got blue light glasses from my eye doctor. Than put night mode on iPhone. It seems better to watch videos and read now.
@@jatinbajaj8075 You mean besides him saying that "the real reason" for eye strain was something other than blue light (namely intense focus and lack of blinking)? It doesn't strain your eyes more than any other colour. This has been tested.

I use Apple's night mode, which changes my screen to warmer tones. Maybe glasses would help, too. Nixing all screen time in the hours before bed is a no-go. I have to unwind somehow, and reading books can often engage my mind and keep me up all night.
My phone has a blue light filter in the settings, so I didn't have to download anything. I always turn it on at night _and_ lower the phone brightness. It helps a lot. 😊 I do have eye strain issues though, and I'm always forgetting to blink. 😩 Gonna start setting my timer when I'm online/writing so I can do the 20/20/20 thing. I knew about it before this vid, but I always forget to do it, so this was a nice reminder!

I don’t care if you believe me or not, but I will say that I intend to find the cure for senescence (aging) before 2050. Let us see how useful you are in helping me realize this goal, Doctor Mike.
I bought Blue light glasses a few years ago. I was having SEVERE eye pain, and couldn't figure it out. The eye doctors said everything was fine, but I knew better. It was so bad that my eyes were starting to get blurred. I finally did my own research and knew it had to be from the phone/computer, because I was on it ALL the time. 12 hours at work, and then go home and on it before bed. I found out about Blue light and ordered a pair off amazon. My eyes were better the first night. The pain was gone, and I'm going 2 years with no eye pain at all, and I'm still on the electronics as much as before. It seriously saved my eyes. Also, just in case anyone was wondering I ordered 2 pairs. 50% and 100%. The half off was good at first, because you can see everything naturally, but I eventually started liking the 100% more. It makes colors change on the computer, but I know I'm getting max protection. Good luck!
@@philcoulson03 Thank you for sharing this. I'll do more research. I think Dr. Mike did raise all of the other points in the video about factors affecting our sleep and eyes along with precautions we can take. These glasses are like an add-on to the process. But, definitely, we shouldn't waste money if something isn't worth it.

Fun fact, blue light is also the most effective wavelength for driving photosynthesis. By comparison, green light is almost useless, which is why most plants reflect it.
Just want to mention that blue light has positive uses. I have an acquired brain injury and I use a blue light therapy lamp to help me wake up in the morning. It reduces my severe fatigue and Improves mood.

Doing my college from home is definitely contributing a ton of blue light. I’m sitting at my laptop from 9am on and off till about 11pm. Thanks for the eye strain tip, I definitely thought that was just because of blue light
Set your phone to filter blue light at night, iOS has the option to do it on Settings. The screen becomes yellowish, you can adjust the amount of color, and also the time that it automatically turns yellower.
Try a wake-up light. Not sure if that's a generic name or a Philips trademark, nor if anyone else makes them, but mine's gotten me through midwinter early rising for quite a few years now.
