Here's What Happens When You Put Tracks on Your Side-by-Side 

So many people comparing a tracked atv to a snowmobile. Two different animals. If you want to go fast and be able to go through bottomless snow and climb in said bottomless snow . Then yeah you’d be better off with a snowmobile. But if you have work to do in the winter.. passengers and gear to carry .. want to travel at slower speeds . Hunting . Ice fishing ..Traveling roads and trails where maybe there’s not 6 ft of untracked snow .. but there’s enough snow that a wheeled atv would be doomed .. you can drive these roads and trails with a tracked atv .. and especially if you drive them often, you can keep a trail packed in all winter and access your go to spots all winter . For this... you don’t need a snowmobile. In fact I think I’d rather a tracked atv or utv . It’s also one less machine to maintain and make room in the garage for . So tracks have their place for sure . Snowmobiles are generally a lot less reliable then a atv too .

We have the same tracks for our Polaris Sportsman 500, truly transforms it into a tank. The tracks seem to have a long life, which is great, and they add year-round versatility to the ATV, so we avoided the need to purchase a snowmobile for dealing with the snow in Bancroft (which justifies the cost of these bad boys). I will say, however: when the snow drifts are huge and powdery, the tracks lose some functionality that a snowmobile would provide - it can sink into powdery stuff which can be a risk of getting stuck. Snowmobiles, being lighter, don't have the same problem. Overall, the price you pay for these is worth it to be able to get use out of it year-round.

I can vouch for Steve's comment about this type of snow that will get you stuck. If you don't like getting stuck constantly, then do not drive your wheeled vehicles through this,..stay with tracks. On the decision to buy an ATV,..if I were in the the market today, I would buy a Yamaha,..no, not totally because of this video, but it does help somewhat!

You were measuring the turning radius, but you measured the diameter and forgot to divide by two. The turning radius with the tracks was about the same as with the spec with tires.

I just bought a used Polaris Ranger Crew 800 yesterday with tracks. Also got the dealer to throw in a set of brand new 27" tires on brand new super ATV aluminum wheels as well. Tracks are cool but kinda impractical where I live. Unless I take it to a riding park with alot of mud or sand I probably wont use them alot. I live in southern Indiana and it rarely snows and when it does it's only a couple inches. I pickup the ranger tomorrow from the dealer and I'm definitely going to try out the tracks in the woods at my house and on the rough terrain in the woods at my in laws house.

Great video! The radius is half of the diameter so you just skipped a step. 347" would be 173.5"

I have tracks on my canam commander xt1000. I mostly use it for plowing and getting firewood in the warm months.

I leave my tracks on all year. I have had the tracks on since 2014, they are still good as new.

In the Uk camso say the belt and bearings aren’t covered, they’re considered wearing parts. Good bit of kit but in mud, will eat bearings for a past time.

depends, if you run can ams tracks on a machine like a 1000R maverick you can get going pretty good with the newest stuff. there improving all the time, and will ride right past a stuck snow mobile most times

I have those tracks on my Ranger. You definitely can't run in high for very long without destroying your clutch and belt. 10 Mph is were it likes it. You need 1000 cc machine. Don't expect to get anywhere fast. They pretty much go anywere up to 16" of snow they don't float on top like a sled. I like to be able haul stuff around which is hard with a sled. Plan on putting a clutch fan it so you don't melt your belt. They are horribly rough on dry ground you feel every rock. I do love them in the right application but they are hard on your machine.

I had tracks on 700 grizzly for 8 years every winter i put them on plow with it and rode a lot in VT they go everywhere and anyone with atv cant follow!! they are a blast in snow can go through 2 ft of snow on mountain trails easily, if they fit 2019 X2 i would use them but dont fit , may buy a set in future.

I think the point of putting tracks on is to be able to use this for utility year round with confidence and maybe not have a snowmobile at all. But probably more importantly people will do it because they can.

I see when you are crouching near the front tracks that they seem to be slightly tilted inwards. Like the tracks are not absolutely vertical straight. My tracks (same model) have a slight tilt inwards also, is that normal?

For those of us in the US I did a check. 42kph is about 26 mph.

If i wanted a full time track vehicle that wasnt very fast i think i would still rather have an argo with tracks. At least that way when the track does come off at some point you still have full size wheels and tires under them and you are not stranded if you cant get the track back on. But if you plan to take tracks off for most of the year than something like this is kind of neat.

Living in Canada and dealing with the amount of snow we do. I would find those tracks completely useless for the cost. I can pick up a really decent snow machine that would handle the snow better faster and easier on the gas tank price $5,000 is a lot of money to put out for something that doesn't do the job

Fronts skids if you want a higher top end. You got a locker and removing the weight from the front seems like a good idea. The brakes... Well that could be an issue, but turning brakes in the rear would be awesome with skids in the front and tracks in the rear. Just my $.02

Since your southern neighbors have no idea what a Killometer is, I converted the top speed into 'Merican. 28 mph. Also, nobody try to tell me how to properly spell kilometer, 'cause we don't know what those are either.

Argo is still the expedition leader. It's already got good flotation and tracks make it unstoppable in deep snow. There isn't really a good step-through utility implement?

Good review. Only video i could find that talks about speed differences. I’m going to buy that exact set up, and speed reduction was a major question in my mind. Do you think they would still be decent on logging road type of trails?

The barrings burnt out all the time and sieze up .. after one day of use the tracks will freeze up if you leave it out side .

They also are a lot of help in sand. It's usually super easy to bury your machine in sand.

Id love to see this guy do reviews in a lot better buggy for track usage lol he does a great job though! Polaris send him a new Polaris general xp4 1000 with a gilomen tune and clutch kit and do a review 😄

I don't worry that much about speed, after all, I really do not need to go 70 mph through the woods. My main need is that it goes where I want it to go, without getting stuck. I don't want to have to walk home.

The radius is measured by the circumference and divided by two.. So it didn't double , it's pretty much the same...

My buddy jsut bought that machine, Nice machine but he is small 5ft 7in and 165lbs. I;m 6ft 2 in and weigh 285 and I found the cab very cramped. If I could fit in I would by one but that's not going to happen. Much too small on the inside for me.

That helmet looks hilarious, I think in an accident you'd be better off without it.

What about durability

I'm not too sure about your report of the turning radius. It looks to me like you measured and reported the diameter and not the radius. Radius obviously would be half unless you did that math in your head and reported correctly.

45 km/h is plenty fast enough. $5000 is worth it, but I'd search for a used set.

My grizz 660 would tear through that with ease.

For that money I'd just buy either larger, more aggressive tires and a lift if possible or a snowmobile.

Sorry but I have to disagree. While I would like tracks for a sxs, in the entirety of your video I did not see anywhere that my 2014 rzr 800s with bighorns would not go, and go fairly easily. I've ridden much deeper snow on much steeper terrain with success in reaching the top. Again, tracks are great, but not necessarily needed in those conditions seen in this video. P.S. I also had a 09 Rhino 700 that I plowed snow with that would push snow great in 4x4 but would also not go very well off road in snow due to tires and lack of soft suspension travel. Good video otherwise
