It's already a new month, so it's time to talk about what to plant in July, especially if you live in zones 9 or 10.
July is smack in the middle of the warm season, and just about anything will grow this time of year. However, it's getting hotter by the day. Most places are going to regularly get 90-100+ degree temps if they aren't already, which means seeds and baby plants are going to have a tough time. Shade cloth can help as well as mulch and deep watering.
This month, you can still start things like eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes. They'll germinate easily, but they may be stressed if you plant them out during extreme temps. This is about the latest I recommend starting these crops.
July is more about succession planting and replacing what you already have growing instead of starting new crops. If you've had warm season crops in the ground for a couple of months, they might be getting old or diseased. It's a good idea to get that out of your garden, and you want to have your replacements ready to go.
I recommend keeping up with more rounds of beans, corn, cucumbers, melons, squash, and pumpkins. There are all crops that you can direct sow more easily as well.
Don't forget about those flowers! There are dozens of varieties that you can grow and even start this late in the year. Some are easier than others, but you can absolutely enjoy blooms for the coming months.
If you haven't started crops yet, you can still grow things. I don't necessarily recommend starting from seed, but you can get a head start by buying starts at your local nursery. This is also a good time to start prepping for the fall by mulching, adding compost, and taking care of other infrastructure things like irrigation.

Now is a good time to cut suckers from tomatoes and root them in water or damp soil in a pot! I always plant my cloned fall tomatoes in June/July here in NorCal 10a. 💚

Yes, much better than starting from seed this late in the year!

Mid 80's? Wow, that's amazing. Too hot over hear in Laredo, TX. Over the 100's daily. Hopeful for some rain over the weekend to cool off.

wow 80's - lucky you. Ventura hasn't had consistent sunshine since before April. I can count sunshine days on one hand - awful weather this summer here. ;(

Same with my garden - 10b. I never get a good crop from spring plants. 🤷🏻‍♀️. But they keep producing until almost December.

Yes, definitely okra LOVES the heat too. It's not quite as popular with some gardeners so we left it off, but we have it on our full calendar list.

As a brand new gardner in 10a on the opposite coast, I’m taking your advice and not planting a bunch of veggies now. Yes. It’s crazy hot here. Working on flowers and getting beds ready by starting companion plants soon. The fact most of my veggies died in the extreme heat except for the peppers gave me a hint.

You just had to start that flowers list with amaranthe. A friend gave me one about a month ago and it's still sitting in a pot by the front door, reminding me every time I go out that I need to get that thing planted! Thank you for the encouragement to get it out today!

Great information for someone like me who lives south of San Francisco. I'm going to listen to your advice and plant some squash, since I have lots of vacant space.

Do i remove or leave the old roots if succession planting using same pot different vegetables? You have inspired me to take on this new hobby!🙏🏻💜
@SanDiegoSeedCompany

It depends. Some plants can grow back. Others are good to cut at the soil level so the roots decompose. That may not happen very quicky in a pot, though.

I wish I could mulch that heavily, unfortunately the pests were SO BAD this year in particular earwigs. They live mulch. I've been battling them since April. They definitely have slowed down in procreation, but they did so much damage to my spring starts is not a good year. 😢

What would the zone be considered at the elevation of 4,000ft. Here in San Diego County?

You can, but it's best for pathways. Otherwise, just don't use a lot of just that.

That should be fine. Expect to harvest in September, so be sure to protect the peppers from sun scald.
