I'm SUPER excited to share that we have dahlia bulbs available! They're such incredible flowers, but I've also made some mistakes along the way, so I want to share some tips and info to help you have a successful season growing these.
sandiegoseedcompany.com/produ...
These are pretty easy flowers to grow, but I've made some mistakes that I want you to avoid. To start, it's important to know that you're dealing with live tubers similar to a potato. But instead of "harvesting" dahlias, you keep the tubers from year to year, whether keeping them in the ground or pulling them out to multiply them.
Dahlias are not frost resistant (I said the wrong thing at 3:18 - let's just blame it on the pregnancy brain), so they should be planted after the last frost. That's why most gardeners in zones 9 and 10 and even zone 8 can plant dahlias anytime, bearing in mind they don't like extreme heat either. Once you receive them, they should be planted right away.
So where can you plant them? Just about anywhere! Pots, raised beds, or in the ground are all fine. I even leave them from year to year.
This is a fairly large pot, so I'm going to put two clumps in here. Note that I'm going to plant the entire clump, not just one tuber. I like to use large pots because that means the soil is going to hold onto moisture well. Dahlias are prone to rotting, so I'm going to water them in and then let them start budding before I water them again.
Dahlias are great for pollinators, but they also attract slugs and snails. After you plant them, use some SluggoPlus to keep the numbers down. Another thing I recommend doing is giving your plants some extra support. It's good to do this early on and carefully.

Just FYI, It would be fine to plant them sideways. Sometimes tuber clusters have a lot going on, and the shoots will always figure it out and make their way up. Also, if you're making a big investment and planting a lot of Dahlias starting them in trays can make sense to ensure they are sprouting normally before putting them in your soil/garden bed. On rare occasions Dahlias can carry a bacterium/disease called leafy gall. Starting them in trays you will avoid contaminating your garden bed with gall, as it can spread to other healthy stock.

Hi, I just found your video. How often do you water your dahlia’s?
@MamaLee5
@MamaLee5 18 дней назад
Ok I know this far fetched but you sent my tubers and the box got set aside. They’ve been sitting for awhile and the tubers are bit shriveled. Should I still try to plant them? Soak them first? I am in central Florida 10b or a I forget. I can also do them in pots to avoid monsoon summer rains.

I plant ranunculus in the fall in the same spot I grow my dahlias. Do you think my dahlias will rot because I water my ranunculus in the spring?

Hi, thanks for the video. I planted some dahlias in Northern California and it was quite warm. I saw some sprouts but they seem to be turning brown and dying back. I don’t water it much at all. Any ideas what could be happening?
@bbbean
@bbbean 11 месяцев назад
Dig into the soil a bit and make sure it is definitely dry. If that's the case, you may be watering too little. Sprouts will need more moisture than established plants.

I bought some dahlia plants that are bushy and blooming. How do I plant these beautiful flowers that will thrive? I am in zone 8 but feels like 9 some years. The temperature was 110 last year and I don’t think they can handle the extreme heat.

Can you please tell us why you hate tomatoe cages? I do use them, as an adjunct to staking, I find both together are good. But you seem really imformative, and I value your opinion
@SanDiegoSeedCompany
@SanDiegoSeedCompany Год назад
For indeterminate tomatoes, cages are just too small and flimsy. For some determinate varieties, they CAN work but are usually still too small. A roma can easily way outgrow a cage. They can work nicely for tomatillos though!

For a Southern California city with 70-75 F degree days in the winter, would planting in September (80-88 F) degree days) be a no go? Thank you so much!
@SanDiegoSeedCompany

They don't mind heat once they're established. We plant them in the spring, but I'm curious to see how they'll do! It might not give many blooms this year, but you can leave them in the ground over the winter.

I live in zone 10. I planted already flowering Dahlias in the spring, they were beautiful. Now in mid-summer, the plants are still growing, but not flowering. Could it be that I keep them in a relatively shady spot? How much sun is recommended in a very hot climate?
@SanDiegoSeedCompany
@SanDiegoSeedCompany 11 месяцев назад
They do want several hours of full sun per day. They can handle a good amount of heat, but some desert areas (eastern California, Arizona, etc.) might be too hot

Hello. New dahlia grower here 😊. I am from Northeast India and we get monsoon rains from may to sept. I just potted some dahlias on my containers and they have sprouted beautifully. I wanted to ask if it is safe to put them on the ground taking on consideration about our climate.
@SanDiegoSeedCompany
@SanDiegoSeedCompany Месяц назад
Hmm. Sounds like it could get really wet, but it also depends on your soil and how much is holds onto water. You could also try some in the ground and some in pots to test.
